"Holistic Hands-on Healing is much more than the intuitive laying-on of hands. In a deeper, more intrinsic sense, it is spiritual ministry founded on peace and love."

Author Rinchen Chodak reached this conclusion after facilitating many energetic healings and noticing the deep spiritual presence that began to emerge after each client session. In her latest book The Universal Healing Art of JING-QI-SHEN, Chodak challenges all healing practitioners to a Ministry of Healing. The Mission - "to bring health and wholeness to the world."

The writer's premise is that a Ministry of Healing starts with an attitude of reaching out not only to the body, but also to the spiritual essence of the client, regardless of the healing tradition or modality being used.

"As a healing facilitator I stand in the loving gap of pure potentiality for my client. I am not concerned with the outcome, I just perform my healing repertoire in a pure space of love knowing that Divine Essence will take care of the rest."

What is Jing-Qi-Shen? Jing-Qi-Shen is named after the San Bao, or Three Treasures, common in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The English translation would be Essence-Energy-Spirit. Based on ancient Chinese, Tibetan, and Ayurvedic practices, Jing-Qi-Shen is often thought to be the forerunner of Reiki.

Jing-Qi-Shen is a deeply compassionate and peaceful healing art, teaching the practitioner to move aside personal ego in order to become a pure loving conduit of Universal Healing Energy. It combines elements of the Meridian System as found in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Energy Healing, and Medical Intuition.

Says Chodak. "The word ministry comes from the Latin - ministerium, which means the act of serving. As a Healing Ministry, the healing practitioner's mission is to heal the body, the mind, the perceptions, and the prejudices in order to bring spiritual wholeness. To do this is to touch and heal the heart of the world."

Aside from running a holistic health practice,! Rinchen Chodak is the co-founder of The Jing-Qi-Shen Foundation, http://www.jing-qi-shen.org/ which provides healing workshops and seminars. Chodak is an Interfaith Minister, and an attorney.

Aromatherapy and Homemade Candle Making

Posted: 15 May 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Article by Sally Stow

What is aromatherapy?  In the United States, alternative forms of medicine are becoming more popular.  While aromatherapy may not be considered "medicine", there are scientifically proven facts that scents alter not only our moods, but may help in fighting certain medical conditions.  I had been interested in aroma therapy for years, and would often burn incense.  While I did notice a change, in my mood...I was not happy with the fact that in burning incense, there is a lot of smoke.  I went to burning candles instead.  Burning candles creates not only the wonderful aroma, but candles do so with noticeably less smoke and much more of a glowing ambiance.  The trouble was, that I am picky.  I could find candles in the stores that "did the job", but I was not always happy with the actual scents they produced.

I had lunch with a friend who had just been to India, and she spoke of the scents and the aromas of spice that waft through the streets of small town of Goa.  After our conversation, I thought to myself...why can't I do that?...why can't I fill my house with the scents of India?...why can't I get into homemade candle making?  I mean, after all, it would be a great way to get the exact candle and scent that I wanted.

I set out to create my perfect aromatherapy candle.  I like the smells of nature...of spice and wood and earthy tones, of subtle flowers and herbs.  What I was not aware of at the time, was that many other people do too.  They much prefer those smells, to the often times overwhelming scents of retail candles.  Those candles are often used to cover up odors, but I wanted my candles to do what aromatherapy does...to promote mental, spiritual and physical health.  Scents of the world, activate a part of the brain known as the limbic system.  This is where human emotions and memories are "stored".  I wanted my candles to calm, to invigorate.

Fragrance is of course, the key when making aromatherapy candles.  It is for this reason the only the hig! hest qua lity of fragrance be used.  There are many kinds of fragrance available on the market for home candle making, but with aromatherapy you want to be certain that you are using essential oils.  These are pure and natural oils made from the extracts of plants, flowers, and herbs.

When choosing a wax to use, many people go with soy wax.  It is easier to work with than paraffin, and is less expensive than beeswax.  So that is what I decided to go with.  Soy wax has a low melting temperature, and disperses the scents well, evenly and consistently.

Before I started, I tried to have a specific goal in mind.  If aromatherapy is meant to enhance or to calm a mood, I knew I needed to be just that...specific.  I had worked with essential oils before, and knew that they can be quite powerful.  Adding just a few drops at a time is key, as you can always add more, but once the scent is in the candle...there's just no way of taking it out.

I must say, that I did a few experiments along the way.  Some worked out great, while others?...not so much.  But I started a "candle making record", a diary of sorts.  Over time I was able to look back at the results, and decide where to go next...when to experiment and when to go with experience.  I now have a small business as a result.  I find great satisfaction in the idea that not only will my candles bring people beauty and a glowing atmosphere in their home...but that perhaps, piece of mind as well.

A Holistic Approach to Getting Rid of Acne: The Natural Acne Cure You Must Try

Posted: 15 May 2012 08:00 PM PDT

Article by Lavonne Carnegie

Most people have never stopped to consider that there may be an alternative means of treating an acne problem. Moreover, most people fail to realize that acne related problems are usually caused by a buildup of toxins in the body. Outside of the conventional treatments usually associated with treating acne, herbs used topically can have a very healing affect and could be the natural acne cure you are looking for.

One herb that I particularly like for treating acne and many other conditions as well is Tea Tree Oil. Tea Tree oil is a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. You can use it as full strength oil (a little dab will do), dilute it in warm water and apply as you would an astringent, or use tea tree oil soap. Tea tree will kill any bacteria or virus it comes in contact with. I highly recommend you have tea tree oil in your medicine cabinet at all times.

Lavender, red clover and strawberry leaves are good herbs for acne, especially to use for a steam facial. Lavender is also great to use topically in the essential oil form. Lavender is also a natural antibiotic and antiseptic. However, do not use a steam treatment if you have extensive or inflamed acne, any steam treatment can make it worse.

Chaste tree berry extract can be used to help prevent premenstrual acne breakouts and papaya enzymes help to exfoliate and unclog pores. Papaya also promotes healthy skin cell growth, softens and smoothes the skin.

Burdock root, dandelion leaves, milk thistle and red clover are also excellent herbs for acne. All of these herbs work with the liver to assist in removing excess hormones and toxins. If the liver is not functioning correctly, acne will worsen. Burdock and dandelion cleanse the liver specifically. They also contain inulin, which removes bacteria from the skin. Burdock and red clover are known to be powerful blood cleansers, and milk thistle helps the liver cleanse the blood. They all go hand in hand and can have a dramatic affect on acne.

If you are looking for a ho! listic a lternative to your commercial astringent, there are herbs that will do the job quite well. The most commonly used herbs for acne that have astringent properties are eucalyptus, thyme and witch hazel. One benefit of using thyme is that is also has antibacterial, antioxidant and antiseptic properties as well.

The last herb for acne that I believe is very beneficial is sage. Sage oil is not only antibacterial, which is important for the treatment of acne, but it is also antifungal, and antiviral. Sage also contains camphor, cineole, rosmarinic acid, tannins. Sage is an all around excellent natural medicine for the treatment of acne and other skin problems.

These natural acne cures do work. However, if you are not ready to go all the way employing these herbal remedies for acne, there are some basic dietary tips I would advise. Most importantly, eat a high fiber diet. This will still assist the body in eliminating toxins and at the rate it should. You can also try a short term fast to eliminate toxins. If you go this route, make sure you are feeding your body what it needs to stay healthy. In other words, don't complete a fast and then go feed yourself a bag full of fast food burgers the next week.

If you are looking for a tried and true natural system that works, I highly recommend and refer people to the Acne No More Holistic Treatment System. It is by far the best product out there and is 100% guaranteed. To view success stories visit http://bfruitful.buk028959.hop.clickbank.net/

Article by Sarra Donathan

Aromatherapy candles have the uncanny ability to almost instantly relieve all your stress and anxiety. If you do not know what an aromatherapy candle, it is a candle therapy based completely on scents. Aromatherapy can be calming anxiety relief or a relaxing night time therapy, depending on the smell of the candle. Different smells make us react in different ways. Your favorite comfort food can relax you, holiday smells can excite you, and there are even candles to increase relationship sexuality.

Now candles are not magical, but those certain smells can influence you slightly. Unfortunately if you are looking for an aromatherapy candle you can expect to pay about on just one. This is a very steep price tag to experience some slight relaxation. By learning how to make aromatherapy candles you can have that relaxation at a much cheaper homemade price tag.

There are different kinds of candles that will give you all a unique experience.

If you love the smell of baking cooking or clean laundry smells you are likely to want a candle that is scented with a fruit or light smell, such as vanilla or strawberry.

Another popular top seller is citrus aromas. It is a very uplifting, clean smell. This would be perfect for a kitchen, bath room, or as motivation to put your in a positive mood.

Some aromatherapy candle users also believe that the scents a person smell can actually stimulate the healing process inside the body. That means that everytime you light a candle you could be fighting off a cold or other sickness. The reason this is believe is because when you smell a candle you breath deeper to take in more of the scent. When you breathe deeply it naturally brings in extra oxygen, making your blood vessels work more and produce more anti-bodies.

To make that deep smelling scent even stronger you can add essential oils to your aromatherapy candle. Essential oils are oils that are mixed with fresh herbs to give you a powerful and concentrated scent.

Aromatherapy With Essential Oils

Posted: 15 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT

Article by Jershon Teigh

A wide variety of natural healing methods have been around since the dawn of man. Aromatherapy is one of these methods, and has been used as a natural healing process by people all around the world. It has a very rich history covering more than a thousand years, and has been recorded being used in ancient Greece, Rome and China. Aromatherapy is the practical use of scents and aromas derived from pure essential oils harvested from a variety of different plant species. These extracted oils use the power of soothing scents to help individuals relax their bodies and minds. Heightened states of relaxation can help create positive mental and physical changes that are believed to have healing abilities.

The modern-day aromatherapy experience usually involves dispensing a few drops of preferred scented oil into either a pot of steaming water, an oil warmer or a diffuser. Practitioners then proceed to breathe in the steam or atomized oil over a desired period of time. Combining both the power of steam and the scented oils can effectively help to clear sinuses, sinus infections and stuffy noses. Atomized or nebulized essential oil is oftentimes preferred over steaming or warming due to the fact that the oil is in a near gas-like state that is more easily absorbed by the body. Essential oils do not necessarily have to be used with a diffuser to enjoy the aromatic benefits. A few drops of a favorite essential oil directly on ones pillow before bed can be just as effective.

Aromatherapy is often used to help people recover from various types of respiratory illnesses by encouraging deeper breathing. This can also be an effective treatment for common annoyances like everyday muscle pain or headaches. Some commonly used natural aromatherapy scented oils include tea tree oil, sweet orange oil, sandalwood, rosemary, rose, peppermint, patchouli, lavender, jasmine, geranium, frankincense and eucalyptus oil. A good number of these oils are often associated with a particular mind and body ailment or attrib! ute. If the ailment is a stubborn cold, then consider using eucalyptus oils. Lavender is a top choice for stress relief, insomnia and overall relaxation. For a more clear and alert mind, consider essential oils of rosemary, peppermint or cinnamon. Geranium is a good choice as a mood enhancer. If an energy boost is needed then ginger may suffice.

In general modern science tends to classify aromatherapy as a form of holistic medicine. History reveals that people all around the world have consistently been using scents and aromas as a health aid with some success for generations. Although aromatherapy and the use of scented oils can have a profound positive impact on people struggling with a large number of common ailments, be sure to consult a physician for persistent or worsening health conditions.

That's the reason perfumes and colognes are so stylish. These are literally sorts of aromatherapy, due to these aromas being developed to have particular effects on the wearer, or people who come within close proximity to the wearer. Reiki Meditation Techniques

Posted: 15 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Article by Cristian Stan

Focus and Tranquillity

You practice meditation in order to find your inner peace and to regain your peaceful state both in mind and body. Through meditation one person can find harmony within itself and relax his mind. Having the necessary time to reflect and focus you find your energy balance.

A fundamental aspect to meditations is for you to create a focus point where to channel your energy. Your hands can act as a focus point for your energy. In this case you should keep your hands close to your chest in a prayer like formation. The middle fingers can help your mind stay in touch with your meditation by pressing the middle fingers together - they are a mean of refocusing.

Deep Thoughts and Deeper Breathing

In Reiki meditation the breathing techniques are more that essential if you want to reach an optima meditation session. Through deep breathing you gain access to the spiritual body. Exhaling and inhaling thoroughly you can penetrate through different states of your body including mental and emotional body. You can ask a question or think of an idea while doing these exercises.

The idea or question can refer to anything from a person to a thing. You can keep your mind from straying from your purpose by using the fire fingers - the middle fingers. It's recommended that you should limit your meditation sessions to fifteen minutes when doing it the first time.

Emotions and Symbols

Using shorter meditation sessions allows you to find the best focusing and breathing methods. Only this way you'll have full control over your mind. You need this in order to stay focused through entire meditation. You need more than the power symbol if you want a full experience. You need to add to your meditation emotional and distance symbols. With these three symbols combined you can use the Reiki energy to heal you or others. At the same time you can use this energy to counter the effects of your negative feelings.

The more you practice the more comfortable you'll ! be throu gh your meditation session and you'll have a better control over your mind and body. Deep breathing and the use of your hands help you channel the energy from your toes up to the head. You need to practice Reiki meditation for years in order to reach all the meditation levels.

The Reiki principles help us in turning the negative energy from our body to positive energy and that translates into a better state of being. Meditation can help us clear our mind and keep a healthier body.

Article by Dan Vickers

If your dog is suffering from arthritis or is in the beginning stages of arthritis, there is help! If you are not sure of sins of arthritis in dogs this article will help you better understand what arthritis is and common signs of arthritis in dogs.

Arthritis is an inflammation of a joint that causes pain, swelling and stiffness. Arthritis is also known as osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. Joints commonly affected with arthritis include the knee, ankle, elbow, shoulder, and the hips. The joints between the vertebrae of the backbone also can develop arthritis.

The physiological changes that occur in pets are virtually identical to those of the human body. Essentially, it is the "breakdown" of the (protective) cartilage that covers or protects the ends of bones at the joint. Arthritis in dogs can be hereditary and can also be caused by trauma.

Arthritis can happen to any age dog, however adult dogs are more prone to dog arthritis. Dogs with arthritis normally display signs of limping, difficulty rising from a resting position, personality change, sensitive to touch, and may be reluctance to climb stairs, run, or even walk.

If your dog shows any of these signs there is a healthy alternative to costly vet bills and drugs. A daily joint supplement may be the perfect answer. Even if your senior dog is not showing any signs of arthritis, a daily supplement may be a great way to prevent future arthritis with a holistic approach instead of high doses of pain medication and inflammatory drugs often used for treatment.

A dog supplement NuJoint Plus offers a suffering dog relief from inflammation and pain while minimizing side effects that many prescription drugs carry.

Ash Wednesday Fasting: Taking a Break the Reiki Way

Posted: 15 May 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Reiki

Article by Eileen Dey

I've always appreciated that Reiki is not a religion, but a certain mindfulness is required of Reiki practitioners.Christian's practice abstaining during Ash Wednesday and also during Lent. It's a collective vibration that is going on in over 2.1 billion people on this planet.Being in balance in all areas of one's life is a starting point. Sometimes abstinence might come into that paradigm to help 'reset' the mind/body so it can appreciate all the indulgences and distractions that are thrown it's way. That is much easier said than done. But here are a few suggestions I've tried that may assist the process of self-reflection and renewal:1. Make a commitment to abstain from one habit for a certain period of time. Whether that be drinking alcohol, smoking, eating sweets, meat, surfing the Internet or TV mindlessly, etc. It could be one week, one month or longer. 2. During that time of abstinence, reflect on how that habit has impacted your life in the past-positively and negatively. 3. With #2 underway, you might discover that keeping a journal as you go along to be helpful to record thoughts and feelings about the habit that has been a part of your life.4. Practice good self-care. Get a massage, practice self-Reiki, meditate. Take this time for you to go within and explore how this new space (absence of a habit) feels within.5. Find others who are also taking such a commitment-online or in person. 12 step recovery groups might work for some, Moderation Management might work for another. 6. If you end up 'cheating' and going back to the habit during your commitment, don't beat yourself up. Reflect on what lead to the 'slippage'. What was the trigger? Start over.7. When you reach the end of your commitment period, celebrate it. Not with an overindulgence of the habit you abstained from, but a good pat on the back. Receive some more self-care and nurturing. You did it!8. As time goes on, notice if you want to take another extended commitment. In Reiki, the founder, Mikao Usui fasted for 2! 1 days b efore tapping into the source that is this healing art. He had done fasts as part of his practice for many years. 9. It usually does take 21 days to shift a pattern in one's psyche, so be prepared to be surprised if you do go that long.10. Finally, remember, making a commitment to letting go of that which does not serve you is a powerful step in your healing. Give credit where credit is due—to you!

Applying crucial oils for aromatherapy is a lot more than a brand new age vogue, as they've been applied in this method for centuries in nations all over Earth. In an earlier time, folks discovered that they could adjust their moods and mitigate physical signs and symptoms using the proper scents. Today we have numerous methods to use vital oils, from dabbing a drop in your handkerchief to employing one of many various varieties of diffusers to modify the atmosphere of a complete room. Next are some admired choices for utilizing important oils so you are able to value the strengths of aromatherapy.

The fact that you can change the smell of a room, office or home quickly with the help of essential oils is one reason people are so fond of them. Using essential oils to improve the smell in a room is a more natural approach than using air fresheners and you also have a bigger choice when it comes to the aroma you prefer. You can consult aromatherapy guides to find out which oils have particular effects, or you can use your own nose as a guide and simply pick the ones you like. You can change your environment extremely quickly because there are so many essential oils to choose from and methods to spread their fragrances. One of the more trendy essential oils utilized in aromatherapy is sandalwood. The historical past of aromatherapy could be traced back virtually six thousands many years when mystic magic and religious practices went hand in hand with therapeutic practices and thus using the initial phases in the advancement of aromatic medicine. The Egyptians have been the ones to create rituals that included the burning of incense aromatic wood and herbs in honor of their gods. Once the smoke raised in the direction of heaven the prayers with the humans attained deities straight. My Fertility Healing Success Story Plus Ten Tips For Every Holistic Healing Journey Part Two

Posted: 15 May 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Article by Anna Wilde

In Part One of this article: "6 months ago I had doubts I would ever conceive. This is my fertility healing story. How I achieved conception with holistic healing."

Now let us continue with the next five top tips for your holistic healing journey.

5) Listen to inspiring healing stories

Inspirational stories uplift and give you the power to go on. I listened to women, who told me their journeys and experiences. I was humbled by the courage of those who wished for children and never conceived. Many were inspirational in how they transcended the bitterness and sense of failure.

Some struggled for many years and then did conceive, and encouraged me onwards. Other powerful women friends had chosen to follow path without children, often with clear spiritual aspirations as the motivation.

6) Balance hope with relinquishmentThis has been the crux of my healing journey, and I believe all healing journeys. There exists simultaneously the maintenance of hope and the vision of what is possible, and at the same time the necessity to relinquish (let go of) expectations, desires and results.

You desire something and don't know if you're going to get it. It's a tough place to be at times! Develop equanimity - being OK with how things are right now, but with the gentle intention to heal.

7) Grow faith and trust

So if we let go, what are we giving our heavy responsibilities to. The letting go process is a surrender than facilitates faith and initiates support beyond just me. This means different things for every person. What is the expression of divine support for you?

'Letting go and letting God' is a relief for me. It provides a sanctuary from needing to figure everything out ourselves. I have felt the back-up of this invisible support invaluable.

8) Learn to listen to the physical needs of your body.

After years of a mainly vegan, vegetarian and raw food diet, I found myself craving more protein. This meant mea! t, fish and eggs. I chose quality sources and cultivated gratitude for the medicinal gift of that food. I felt better and better once I let go of rigid ideas about how to eat.

Your ideal diet will be different from someone elses. The question is; do you feel intrinsically happy eating the food you eat. Does it energise you? If not, start exploring!

What are the main points with healthy food for healing?

Eat: Unprocessed whole-food, organic when possible, more greens and vegetables, fresh and some raw foods, healthy fats, less sugar and white flour. Drink: more water, less alcohol and less coffee. And most of all: enjoy your food... guilt-free!

Of course it's not just about food. Enjoy heart pumping exercise regularly for pleasure.Keep warm if you have a cool constitution. Give yourself healthy treats: take a bath if you need some nurturing, or have a massage (swap foot massages with a friend!)

9) Imagine yourself healed and invite everyone else to do the same

In the recent couple of years, when people used to ask me how it was going, I'd often say 'just imagine me pregnant'. This was one way of saying 'pray, but with the image of me already healed in mind'. This is always far more helpful than fearing the worst.I am infinitely grateful for all of my friends and family who sent warm supportive thoughts in my direction.

10) Develop patience

This journey has made me more understanding and more human. I found out there is no right way, just dealing with whatever is in your plate the best you can. Take it easy and know the path to wholeness is paved with patience.

Conclusion

What is the best thing about embracing your healing process with trust, rather than handing the authority over to professionals who you think may know better? You grow, you evolve, and you bloom inside.

I now know more truly than ever before that I am a beautiful, powerful and unique woman, who has the ability to transcend adversity and separation. 10 y! ears ago , and even five, I couldn't have shared that with you.

Dog Information: The Importance Of Holistic Dog Food

Posted: 15 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Article by Melinda Smith

Dogs are not machines. Although both machines and living organisms need energy, they get this energy comes from different sources. Unlike machines which get their energy from a variety of sources, including electrical, living things get their energy from food, whose molecules break down to create the needed energy. This is why it's important to critically consider developing a healthy and holistic food regimen for one's dog.

Like humans, dog need vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, and roughage in their diet. However, the composition of the diet should reflect the unique needs of these canines. They require, for example, more protein and more calcium than humans. Therefore, every food item that we eat is not necessarily good for our dogs.

Just because a brand of dog food is expensive does not mean it is good. Many companies will prey on a dog owner's love of their pet in order to get them to pay more for their food. Pet owner's love of their pets is exploited by making them believe they must spend more on food to meet their nutritional needs.

When you provide natural balance dog food, try selecting a diet plan geared to your dog's breed. In order to obtain this dog information, ask your veterinarian. If you can't obtain sufficient dog information, try magazines published for canine lovers. If this fails, you can also try searching the many Internet websites solely dedicate to canine care to find dog information.

Remember that there is no single source that can provide you with perfect information regarding holistic dog food that suits your pet's nutritional needs as well as taste. It is all about experimenting with different ideas until you feel that you have discovered lifes abundance dog food. So, don't be afraid of experimenting. But at the same time, don't overdo the experimentation else you may cause irreparable damage to your pet.

Raw meat is essential in a balanced dog diet since it provides the necessary protein requirement. Bones provide calcium for! longevi ty and strength of your dog's bones and teeth. In addition, eggs provide proteins and vitamins. These three things in your dog's diet plus vegetables and anything you may add are sure to provide a very nutritious diet for your companion.

Invest Locally, Participate in a CSA

Posted: 15 May 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Free weekly CSA Delivery in the Skaneateles area (13152) Time to sign-up for the 2012 Schoolhouse Farms CSA! Learn more when you Google Schoolhouse farms or visit us at this link.

Keep it local and support your neighborhood farmer A weekly deliverable share of 7-8 items that begins in June or as soon as weather allows and runs until Mid-September or so. It is a collection of Schoolhouse Farms grown produce that varies as does the harvest ! Starting with greens and other early season fare and continuing with heirloom tomatoes, beans, squash and a host of other items as they mature. Great local pesticide free products from growers you know and live in your community.

A CSA from Schoolhouse Farms

We have always looked for an approach to farming that best reflected our vision and values …so we have chosen to be a CSA farm. We believe that Community Supported Agriculture can restore the vital link between consumers, farms and their farmers, and the natural world, and we believe that restoring that connection is more important than ever at this time in history.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has." ~Margaret Mead

A CSA is a relationship of mutual support and commitment between local farmers and community members who pay the farmer an annual membership fee to cover the production costs of the farm. In turn, members receive a weekly share of the harvest during the local growing season. The arrangement guarantees the farmer financial support and enables many small- to moderate-scale organic family farms to remain in business. Ultimately, CSA creates "agriculture-supported communities" where members receive a wide variety of foods harvested at their peak of ripeness, flavor and vitamin and mineral content.

"We cannot move back to a rural society. We have to create a new relationship between the citizens and "their" farmland that will make the benefit of the farm experience available for anyone who seeks education, recreation, or therapy. Every community needs to incorporate farms not only to have fresh local food, but also to have available educational facilities. The extermination of farms on the East and West coasts of the United States is leaving a vast, thinly populated, highly mechanized and chemicalized agriculture in between. This has many detrimental consequences, environmental, educational, and social." ~Trauger Groh, Farms of Tomorrow Revisited.

Why Participate in a Schoolhouse Farms CSA?

Eat fresh ~ experience food with higher nutrition and better taste. Eat organically ~ and keep chemicals off the land, out of the water, and off your plate. Eat locally ~ and save the expensive fossil fuel miles (about 1300) that it currently takes to get a pound of food to the American table. Eat heirloom tomatoes ~ and support our planets seed heritage. Support a small farm and its farmer ~ and preserve beautiful farm landscapes, wildlife habitat, and a more secure local economy. Connect naturally to the source of your food and to each other in the spirit of community. Know your farm…know your farmer CSA has been called "farming with a face on it." You'll have a very direct relationship to the farm and farmer growing your food, and an opportunity to be closer to the source of your food than ever before.

Support for agriculture

If agriculture is replaced by agribusiness, what will be the effect on human health and the environment for future generations? Unchecked, agribusiness has already produced factory farming, genetically engineered foods, and the suicide seed. The average child receives four times more exposure than adults to at least eight widely used pesticides in food. You, the consumer, are voting every day with your food dollar. As a shareholder, that food dollar is maximized for you, for the farmer, for the land, and for the environment.

How does CSA work?

The CSA customer becomes a member payment early in the year. In return, the shareholder "shares" in the season's harvest by receiving a weekly box of fresh delicious, quality produce throughout the growing season. Shareholders, inevitably become allies of the farm and farmer they support. By simply sharing in the harvest, they provide a dependable market for the farm's production. They give their farmer the opportunity to focus on the art and science of farming ~ of caring for the land while growing the most healthful and highest quality food. In this way, shareholders also support the land and the environment through the beneficial practices of their farmer.

CSA has its risks!

Yes this is an investment and with it comes a risk. Mother Nature is ultimately in charge and as such has final say as to how things grow. We have modified aspects of our small operation every year in an attempt to reduce the negative impacts weather can bring. However, it is not perfect science so on occasion things don't go as well as planned and the dividends maybe a little smaller then we would like.

Alternative Health - A Holistic Approach that Works

Posted: 15 May 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Article by David Opal

The past few decades have seen a huge growth in interest in so called alternative health, complementary medicine or the holistic approach to illnesses. Call it what you will. Probably the main reason for this has been a profound dissatisfaction with what mainstream medicine has often got to offer. All too often the whole business of dealing with doctors and specialists can seem so daunting and impersonal. The drugs, which these medicos prescribe, have unpleasant side effects which at times can seem almost as bad as the diseases which they are supposed to treat.

Can vulnerable people be blamed for trying out something else, especially as it offers a more human and comforting approach?

The truth is that both the science based and alternative health approaches have something to offer, and it would be a wise decision to explore both options. Let's not forget that for all its shortcomings, modern medicine has done more than anything else to cure illness and prolong life. It certainly is vitally important that anyone who has a medical problem should first and foremost consult a doctor, before treating his or her condition with complementary medicine.

Once the more orthodox methods of treatment have been taken into account, its then time to try out one or more of the many alternative health approaches.

And there are many alternative traditions. Herbal medicine is probably one of the most tried and tested remedies. Many herbs such as garlic and Echinacea have a great ability to boost the immune system and are highly effective in preventing and treating infections such as colds and sore throats. A whole range of herbal remedies is now available down at your local drug store, and you are sure to find a treatment for most relatively minor ailments.

Alternative health practitioners emphasize an approach that deals with the body as a whole: the so-called holistic approach. The idea here is to treat both body and mind as apposed to the western scientific tradition, which treats! the bod y as a kind of machine.

In many of these traditions of Indian and Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture, an emphasis on working with nature is used, rather than the western approach, which tries to bend and mould it.

Certainly the alternative health traditions have proved their worth alongside orthodox medicine, and after all, isn't that what complementary means anyway.

Mindful Walking: Walking with Awareness

Posted: 15 May 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Walking meditation is a simple way to connect with your spirit and mother earth in a very grounded way.

Many of us take the benefits of walking for granted. Each day we limit the steps we take by driving or sitting for long periods of time. But walking even a few blocks a day has unlimited benefits – not only for our health, but our spirit as well, for as we walk, we connect with the earth.

Even when walking on concrete, the earth is still beneath us, supporting us. Walking lets our body remember simpler times, when life was less complicated. This helps us slow down to the speed of our body and take the time to integrate the natural flow of life into our cellular tissue. Instead of running from place to place or thinking about how much more we can fit into our day, walking allows us to exist in the moment.

Each step we take can lead us to becoming more mindful of ourselves and our feelings. Walking slows us down enough not only to pay attention to where we are in our body, but also to our breath. Taking time to simply notice our breath while we walk, through the length of our inhales and exhales, and becoming attuned to the way in which we breathe is taking a step towards mindfulness. When we become more mindful, we gradually increase our awareness of the environment around us and start to recognize that the normal flow of our thoughts and feelings are not always related to where we are in the present moment. Gradually we realize that the connection we have with the earth and the ground beneath our feet is all that is. By walking and practicing breathing mindfully we gain a sense of calm and tranquility — the problems and troubles of the day slowly fade away because we are in the 'now'.

The simplicity and ease of a walking practice allows us to create time, space and awareness of our surroundings and of the wonders that lie within. Taking a few moments to walk each day and become more aware of our breath will in turn open the door for the beauty of the world around us to filter in.

The Role of Vitamins in Holistic Health

Posted: 15 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by TC Yeap

As we become more aware of how we can live healthier and more natural, we find that vitamins can play an important role in living naturally. Being healthy is not merely avoiding disease, but it is also promoting your overall health as well as your well-being. One way you can do that is to simply eat more healthy foods, but this can only take you so far. It is practically impossible to get all of the vitamins and minerals that you need in a diet, even a completely balanced one.

Many people are always on the go and this makes it even more difficult to live the healthy and natural life for which we all strive. Junk food is readily available and it easy much easier to stop through a drive thru for your meals than it is to cook one at home or prepare your lunch each morning. Because of this, many people eat the same meals day in and day out, which puts them at a greater risk for vitamin deficiencies.

In order to avoid vitamin deficiency as much as possible, we must take steps to not only live more naturally, but also to ensure we are receiving all of the nutrients our bodies need. One way that we can promote our health in this manner is to take a daily multivitamin. However, we may also be lacking in various individual vitamins.

Vitamin A, for instance, plays a large role in our bone growth, vision, healthy cell function and reproduction. Vitamin A is essential in maintaining the linings of our respiratory, urinary and digestive systems. Vitamin A also helps our immunity in that it works as a barrier against viruses and bacteria.

Additionally, vitamin B6 and B12 are also very important. B6 assists our body's proper red blood metabolism, protein metabolism, as well as nervous and immune systems. Vitamin B6 is also important in the conversion of tryptophan to niacin and assists in maintaining your blood sugar. Killing The Dead Sea - Jordan

Nov 1996 In the last 40 years the sea level of the dead sea has sunk 16 metres, leaving behind white, salty residues on the sandy shore. Ecologist Gidon Bromberg believes industry and over- development may have robbed the Sea of its chance to rejuvenate. For years, the shimmering waves and oases of palm trees have provided a natural spa tourists. Lured by the therapeutic benefits of low humidity and oxygen rich air, they can float in the water and read books or cover themselves in black mud to soak up the medicinal effects. But as new international hotels spring up, Bromberg laments the lack of co-operative strategy between Jordan / Israel. He says, "there is no holistic plan" and worries that industrial mineral plants on both sides of the Sea continue to drain the basin. Israeli children, on a school trip to explore the smooth, underground caves, are unanimous that "we shouldn't ruin the Dead Sea". If there is still hope of hydrating the patchy ground and sandy shelves surrounding the Sea, then development of this historical and geographical treasure must be properly controlled.
