Aromatherapy and the Aura of Scented Oils

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 10:00 PM PDT

Article by Tom Hammond

Sensory TherapyJust as the body requires rest and relaxation, the five senses also require personal attention. When stress and chaotic daily routines drain personal resources, it's time to be good to yourself. Reverse the axiom from "Do Unto Others" to "Do Unto Yourself". Learning to treat yourself as you do others is the first step in healing battered senses. Identify those moments that bring the deepest awareness of self and expand upon them. No week should ever pass without a special part that allows the individual to be good to themselves through practices that bring about sensory therapy. We cannot control what the universe does, but we can control how we respond to it.

Creating Sensory Therapy Certain scents have the ability to create the aura of tranquility. Scented oils and scented candles should be part of sensory therapy. Surround yourself with scented oils like vanilla, lavender, orchid and other exotic fragrances. Take advantage of bath time with a scented candle and a warm, relaxing soak. Nothing is as restorative as a half hour in the glow of a scented candle while bathing.

AromatherapyIt's long been known that particular aromas are beneficial to sensory well-being. Using fragrant scents to produce the desired realm of calm that soothe the senses is an experience in aromatherapy that should also be part of regular practiced meditation. Oriental cultures have relied upon incense as a means of developing the meditation experience.

MeditationThoughts travel through the stream of consciousness faster than the speed of sound and in such volume that it often feels as if that voice in one's head is unnecessarily verbose. Meditation is like an electrical short-circuit. Meditation helps reduce mental verbosity in the thought processes by the simple act of relentless and unyielding focus. While it may seem hard to focus for even a few minutes, practicing daily will greatly improve your concentration.

To meditate properly, the body must be in ! a relaxe d position, either lying on one's back, in a modified yoga Lotus position or standing with feet 6-12 inches apart and weight evenly divided. Focus on breathing. Begin to breathe rhythmically. For the mental process to be of particular value, the mind must be turned off from all external distractions. This means focusing on a single vision for a prolonged period of time. Many people choose to envision a beautiful flower, waterfall, or a favorite color. Meditation doesn't need to be prolonged. Meditating daily for 15 minutes is beneficial to maintaining tranquility.

Making Aromatherapy Solid Perfumes

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Article by Remy Baker

Have you noticed the popularity of solid perfumes these days? Some of the top perfume houses have even started making solid versions of their top designer perfumes to meet this need.

This new wave of interest has also resulted in many people becoming quite keen to learn how to make their own blends. Of all the many reasons for the seemingly overnight popularity of solid perfumes and why more and more people are beginning to appreciate them, one stands out by a long mile. That reason of course, is the very sensual nature of solid perfumes and the intimate manner in which they are applied on the body.

There is something totally sensuous about dipping your fingers into an aromatic pot of silky and velvet textured parfum and gently rubbing it into your skin. The effect is even more pleasing when the body's natural heat slowly warms it up so that its fragrance gently envelops you. The pleasure of this experience is almost indescribable.

When making own my personal blends, I prefer to use sensuous natural oils like Lavender, Ylang ylang, Patchouli and Sandalwood. I also like Precious absolutes like Bulgarian rose, Jasmine and Tuberose. The heady combination of these oils and their beautiful fragrances, coupled with their aromatherapy health benefits make them totally irresistible. What's more, knowing that most of them also have aphrodisiac properties makes using them in my blend all the more exciting.

As a matter of fact, one of my favorite essential oil perfumes is one I made with the intoxicating Sampaquita absolute, Chocolate absolute, Ruby orange oil, Vanilla absolute and a dash of Labdanum to give it a light amber note. The result is an absolutely decadent and exotic perfume that evokes the most seductive feelings.I call this perfume My Secret Pleasure!

Apart from the blends I make to sell, I also make one off solid perfumes for friends and family. In fact, one of my favorite gifts to loved ones who might be ill or in hospital is to look up the essential oils that have the ! right he aling properties to ease their discomfort and uplift their spirit. These oils are blended into a special, solid aromatherapy perfume. In addition to this, I also make scented sachets with the same essences for them to place in their pillow or by bed side.

There are hundreds of aromatic botanical essences available for making perfumes if your preference is natural perfume. For those open to using both natural and man-made perfume making supplies, there are thousands of premium quality scented oils available to create your own perfume from.

Once you know what supplies to use and how to combine them, it's really quite easy for anyone to make their own solid perfume. You can make your own perfume in less than 20 minutes.Thankfully, the perfume ingredients you'll need are easy to find and cheap to buy.Another plus is that packaging for your blends are also quite easy find and very affordable.

For instance, I like to package my personal blends in empty powder compacts and the ones I sell in little porcelain pill boxes I buy from chemist stores.

So, how should you apply solid perfume?

Ladies, the best way is to glide a finger across the perfume and rub it into your cleavage, the inside of your elbows and the back of your neck.Men can just rub a little bit behind their ears and on the inside of their elbows. It's as simple as that, a little goes a long way.Making your own solid perfume is not only a lot of fun, it is also extremely satisfying. In your leisure time, you can start making special blends for your family and friends or sell your blends and earn from home.

Good For you Aromatherapy

Article by john

Its good for you!Tell this to anyone who's about to brave the dentist's chair or the doctor's examination table and he will expect nothing short of pain and suffering. Tell this to anyone who's about to try aromatherapy that these fragrant, pleasurable treatments are typical of aromatherapy, a system of caring for the body with botanical oils such as rose, lemon, lavender and peppermint. Whether they are added to a bath or massaged into the skin, inhaled directly or diffused to scent an entire room.

These natural, aromatic oils have been used for a lot of years ago to relieve pain, care for the skin for example to mention a few neroli, lavender and rosemary oils. "If there is one oil no home should be without, it is lavender," as its an excellent first aid oil. It soothes cuts, bruises and insect bites and can also be added to your bath oil for a relaxing, stress relieving soak. The other essential oil that is invigorating during those times or days of low energy is rosemary, you can also inhale right from the bottle. It is also good for toning the skin. Peppermint is another mental stimulant as you can add a drop to an unscented facial lotion and applying the lotion under toe nose or behind the ears, for that somber mood citrus oils work well in a diffuser and create a bright, uplifting atmosphere and the other oils within this group include lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit.

These days most of our life style has changed thereby at times leading to stress, so in order to take care of that or to relief stress you can find a quite number of floral oils and they are the best and most people find floral oils most appealing and it is suggested adding florals to unscented lotions or mixing them with carrier oils for a soothing massage.

Tea tree is another versatile antiseptic and very gentle skin oil and it is also suggested applying a single drop directly to the skin in order to speed up the healing of cuts and pimples. When used, essential oils are less likely to cause side effects th! an most over the counter drugs but but still advise caution.

Aromatherapy and Dentistry

Article by Jerry messimei

Aromatherapy can work wonders on how we feel, which is why it can be so wonderful to use within the environment of a dentist's office. We use an atomized spray that is injected into the air of our office, with various scents which are designed to put people in a relaxed, calm mood.

One effective scent is lavender, which seems to have the psychological effect of calming individuals, helping soothe them so that they are less fearful. We don't use a heavy amount, just a small amount so that the feeling you get from it is really almost subliminal. You really don't notice it but you do notice the calming, soothing effect.

Our goal is to distract people, to take their mind off the fact that they are having dental work done. With this in mind, we have several other things in place to make our office a more comfortable and happy place. Among them are: Televisions mounted over every chair with headphones for soundHeated vibrating massage chairs to relax inStereo music played in the office throughout the dayChildren's play area for kids to feel happy in

We also use digital radiopathy, a method of taking x-rays without having to develop them, which allows us to reduce radiation exposure down to practically nothing. And for deep cleaning, we use strictly ultrasonic scaling, not hand-held instruments. It is much more effective, gentle and less damaging to the root structure of the teeth.

Visiting a dentist should be a pleasant, soothing experience, not one which makes you feel uncomfortable or afraid. We do everything you can to ensure you have the nicest experience possible. Our use of aromatherapy, massage cushions, televisions, special chairs, headphones and even hypnosis will help you feel as happy as possible during your dental visit.

The Unseen World: What We Can’t See

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT

Exploring the unseen world can be well worth your while as there are many gifts awaiting you there.

Just because we can't see something doesn't mean it doesn't exist, although this is a common way in which people deny the existence of spirit guides, angels, and other unseen helpers in our lives. However, anyone who has encountered such beings can attest to the fact that they do, indeed, exist, just as our breath exists, keeping us alive, even though we can't see it. The wind exists, too, but we only know this because we feel it on our skin and hear it moving the leaves on the trees. All around us and within us are things we can't see, and yet we know they are just as real as the grass beneath our feet.

What we see and don't see may just be a matter of perspective, like the ladybug who sees the leaf on which she sits, but not the tree the leaf grows on, or the person sitting beneath it. And the person beneath the tree may or may not see the ladybug, depending on where he focuses his attention. Still, all of these things, whether seen or not seen by the person or the ladybug, exist in reality. Some people are more gifted at accessing that which we cannot see, but given an open and willing heart, anyone can tune into the invisible realm and begin to find their way.

Human beings have always done this, and it is only recently that we have fallen into distrusting the existence of what we can't see. If you have lost touch with the unseen world, all you have to do is resolve to open your heart to its existence, and it will make itself known. Closing your eyes in meditation and visualization, or engaging the unseen through the written word, are just two ways to welcome the invisible back into your life. Whatever you choose to do, cultivating a relationship with that which you can't see is a time-honored human practice that can greatly enhance your life. -by Madisyn Taylor

Mind Creation: Dr. Rob’s Intention of the Day, July 10, 2012

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Hello and good morning
Another awesome and amazing day in the universe
God has granted you and I the beauty and perfection
Of this day, this moment, this right now
Mind Creation, the intention this day

Yes, this is the day to create away
Away to that good life, that God-life, that God-way
It's to recognize the mind as the power of thee
The power of God and this is all you see
All is but thy perception and thy perception is good
It's the practice you see of all great as it be
And then to make it better and then He destroys it again
For He Generates, Organizes, and Destroys within
But think it all good and God's way, I say
For all is but the mind, it's creating the day
Look around and see the wonder of it all
How much God's love creates all that you be
Put a smile, I see, and say great in the day
And thank you God for thy way
As I move forward and smile, and love all that there be
And then let go and move forward with thee
It's mind creation, as I see all that there be
I know God is so good and great in the day
And love is the way
Namaste, Dr. Rob

The Process Of Making Essential Oils For Aromatherapy

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Article by Sara Goodwin

When I first got into Aromatherapy and using essential oils in my daily life I got excited about the prospects of making my very own oils from the many herbs and plant varieties. Little did I know what was involved, as my herbal teacher humbly gave me a more accurate picture. It requires massive amount of raw plant material to make just a small amount of essential oil. Even plants that contain major amounts of fragrant oils, such as rosemary or eucalyptus, require many buckets of plant to equal one ounce of oil.

The process is interesting, however, for any of you wondering how your essential oils are made. Many out there are processed in a way that makes them lower quality and not as beneficial for therapeutic use. So, it is good to know overall, what to look for in the manufacture you buy from.

Extracting the Oil:

The method of extracting essential oil can be done in 5 different ways.

Water/Steam distillationExpressionEnfleurageCarbon dioxideSolvent extraction

1) Water or steam distillation is the most popular form of extraction used. It uses steam that rises through the plant pulling the essential oil with it on its motion upward. It is then carried through a tube surrounded by cold water. This forces the steam to convert back into water. And, as you know, oil and water do not mix. The two are easily separated.

2) Expression is a method that presses the oils from the seeds and peels of certain citrus varieties like lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, and orange. 3) Enfluerage is a method that is not commonly used today, although it was a popular technique used in ancient times. France is one of the few countries who still employ such traditional extractions. The reason for this is because it is a complex and time consuming process. It involves a procedure that places fragrant blossoms on sheets of warm fat or vegetable oil (used today) that absorb the oils. This routine is done over and over with the same fat or oil until the end result is achieved.

4) Carbon Diox! ide is a fairly new method that uses carbon dioxide gas (and sometimes solvent) to extract the oils. It is a very expensive procedure that entails keeping the gas under constant temperature under high pressure. You will only find the most expensive essential oils use this method that produces an oil that is pure because no heat is involved.

5) Solvent extraction does not use hardly any heat, instead the plant material is dissolved in a solvent solution of hepane, methylene chloride or hexane. The solvent is later boiled off and separated from the essential oil "concrete" which is place in alcohol. The alcohol is removed. The remaining oil is called an "absolute".

To create an oil in its purest form involves an intense array of lab equipment to separate the aromatic, oily substance from the plant matter. One of these five methods is used but it depends on the plant itself. Most essential oils produced commercially are used in the food industry as flavorings or in the perfume industry or are used to scent an array of products to hide unpleasant odors. Only about five percent of the oils produced today are used in aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy For Your Pet

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Article by Sara Goodwin

Yes, it's true, aromatherapy can work on pets as well as humans. But more specifically, you can use essential oil recipes for a variety of pet products and avoid those harmful chemical sprays, collar, and powders that are down right dangerous for the health of your pooch or cat. A large number of commercial flea killers can make them sick and cause nervous system imbalance and erratic behavior. If you love your pet the best alternative you can give them are products that you make yourself using a number of different natural oils.

Fleas tend to be the number one pet problem throughout households world wide. And for your dog or cat they are simply uncomfortable and irritating to the skin, causing infection and disease. No pet that I know like them, with constant scratching and itching, who could blame them. To boot, the fleas lay their eggs in your carpet which makes them double trouble for you and your family. So to get rid of these tiny little pests you can use an array of essential oils that absolutely can't stand. They don't actually kill them but the definitely do the job in making them leave your home and living space.

Essential Oils For Flees And Ticks:PennyroyalBay laurelCamphorCitronellaLemonLavenderCloveEucalyptus

In addition, a flee collar can be made using straps of heavy weight material that are dowsed in the following oils: eucalyptus and pennyroyal. Place 1 drop of each oil on the collar and keep in up every few hours.

You should always avoid getting the oils on your pet directly, they can get on the skin and causes irritation and can enter their tissues via the pores. A dog collar is really the best place to put the essential oils because flees, as well as ticks, tend to concentration in the warmer areas of the neck region. As an alternative you can actually buy an aromatherapy collar at your local health food store, but make sure it is completely natural not made from chemicals.

The pets bed is the next place to concentrate your efforts to rid these fl! ees for your home for good. Many people make their dog a personalize pillow made from herbs and oils that work to repel. You can spray you pets sleeping area with a mist you make using any of the oil combinations above. Even if flees are not an issue, you can keep your pets bed smelling fragrant.

You must experiment with different scents, however, not all of them will be enjoyed by your dog or cat. Many dog seem to love the smell of cedarwood, maybe because it has an earthier smell they are used to on long walks in naturally environments. Cedarwood chip filled dog beds are a great purchase and very popular among pet owners who want to take a more natural approach to pet care. Overtime, try to replace all your chemical, toxic pet products with these natural alternatives that will make you and your dog or cat live a healthier, happier life.

Aromatherapy Basics: Selecting A Diffuser For Therapeutic Use

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 04:00 AM PDT

Article by Ginger Robbins

Essential oils have become more and more popular in recent years, as their wide variety of truly therapeutic uses have been recognized. To gain the benefits of essential oils, therapists and practitioners typically use one of three modalities: topical application, ingestion and inhalation. Amazingly, inhaling essential oils can have profound effects on the mind and body, beyond the simply enjoyment of a pleasing aroma. And to take advantage of these potential therapeutic effects, an aromatherapy diffuser is used -- yet there are several styles of diffusers available, each with particular benefits. Here's a look at the diffusers you'll find, and some help choosing the best one for your needs.

The Research Is In: Essential Oils Have Proven Health Benefits

Scientific investigation over the last several years has revealed a great many truly medicinal properties of essential oils. We're finding out its not just about great smells, but that these great smells can affect us profoundly. Diffusing essential oils has been scientifically proven to lower physiological markers of stress and lessen anxiety. Other research indicates essential oils can have a very positive impact on our immune system function. Oils stimulate the immune system into action, improve its function, and actually de-activate infectious viruses and bacterial. All these benefits can be gained by using the right aromatherapy diffuser.

Diffusers for "Aroma" Therapy: Using Oils for Emotional and Energetic Benefits

Researchers have discovered amazing changes in our bodily processes which occur immediately after smelling certain scents. One of the components of Lavender, which gives it its sweet, calming aura, initiates changes that are directly related to lower stress levels. This same aroma also seems to allow for deeper sleep. Other oils are known for their ability to brighten moods. So what's the best diffuser for these uses? It turns out all diffusers will do this job, and the only difference is the size of the env! ironment in which you're diffusing the oils.

Each type of diffuser will cover a different number of square feet -- and generally the less expensive models are for the smaller spaces. A "plug-in" diffuser plugs straight into a wall socket, and evaporates oil from a cotton through warmth. Easy to use, silent, great for one small-to-moderate size room. Very inexpensive. Next, the fan diffusers blow air over an oil-saturated pad. They might make a little "white noise" sound from the fan, but are generally very tolerable. The smaller units are inexpensive and for small spaces like the plug-in unit. Larger ones might cover areas up to four hundred square feet. Like the plug in, you'll need to replace the pad every once in a while. Then there's "ultrasonics", which are small ultrasonic humidification units made to diffuse essential oils along with the mist of water vapor they emit (sometimes called "ultrasonic nebulizers"). Also very quiet, and nice if you're in a dry environment. The cover about the same space as the larger fan units. The most powerful diffusers are simply called "nebulizers", as they nebulize the essential oils to evaporate them. This means they make the oil into very tiny particles which you can see as pure essential oil vapor (without water). These are nearly silent, and can diffuse into areas larger than eight hundred square feet.

Any of these diffusers will allow you and your family to enjoy and benefit from the aromatic effects of essential oils. Generally the more costly units will cover more square footage, but will not provide more benefit in terms of aroma. If however you'd like to take full advantage of the medicinal aspects of essential oils, providing immune support (and data is now coming out that essential oils can even prevent cancer) you'll want to be a little more careful with your selection. For actions like disinfecting your living environment, boosting immune function, and perhaps using essential oils to support recovery from an illness, it can be important to put a hi! gher con centration of essential oils in the air than you can do with a simple fan or warming unit.

It is the nebulizing diffusers that allow complete flexibility in terms of essential oil output, and maximizing the concentration of essential oils in your environment. If this is what you are seeking, make sure you find a cold-air nebulizing diffuser, one that uses air rather than water to make the evaporating mist of essential oils. The fancier of these units will have an output control, enabling you to diffuse just a little at a time at the lowest setting, to really creating a visible vapor of essential oil within the nebulizing chamber.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Essential Oils

With any diffuser, its important to note that your nose will stop working before the diffuser does! Really, after a short while of diffusing the same aroma, one's smell scent becomes accustom to it and you'll no longer know its there -- but someone just walking in the room will be able to detect it. To prevent this, and use as little essential oil as possible for the greatest aromatic effect, its best to run your diffuser only a few minutes every hour. Find the on/off cycle that's best for you, where you're smelling the aroma the most and using the least amount of oil. A timer, readily available at hardware stores, can help. Note that this isn't of concern when using the diffuser for immune function support -- running the diffuser all the time is fine. At the same time, essential oils are known for working in very small amounts, so by being a bit conservative, you'll probably use just the right amount!

Aromatherapy First Aid

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Article by Wendy Mackay MIAAMA

Every home and workplace should have a first aid kit. But have you considered also having an aromatherapy first aid kit?

Essential oils are perfect for dealing with many of the minor illnesses, injuries and other conditions we encounter everyday, and in a natural, gentle and holistic way.

Some books will say you need to have 10 or even 20 essential oils to start your first aid kit. But in reality you could start with just a few. The following are some of the most useful -

Tea tree - Tea tree's strong medicinal aroma reflects its powerful bacterial andvirus busting properties, although its action is also very gentle. Tea tree can be added to a carrier oil for skin conditions, or even to a foot bath for feet infections.

Lavender - A wonderfully versatile oil, but best known for its relaxant properties. Can be used to soothe and heal minor cuts, insect bites, or burns. Add a few drops to a bowl of warm water and use to wash minor cuts or grazes. A drop inhaled from a tissue or on a pillow can aid restful sleep. Add to the bath at the end of a stressful day or rub a drop into the temples for a headache.

Eucalyptus - Wonderful for respiratory conditions, add eucalyptus to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam to help clear a stuffy head. Or add to a carrier oil and massage into chest and back. Put a few drops on a damp cloth and use to wipe over door handles, light switches and other areas to reduce the spread of colds.

Rosemary - Stimulating to the mind and memory, rosemary is great for mental fatigue. It is also good for the hair - add to a carrier oil and use as a scalp massage for dry, flaky or out of condition hair.

Peppermint - Add a few drops to a tissue and inhale to help relive nausea, travel sickness or headaches. Or add to a footbath for hot tired feet.

Remember, except for specific instances stated above for lavender, never apply essential oils neat to the skin. They should always be diluted in a carrier oil, bath etc. So adding some carrie! r oil su ch as sweet almond or jojoba, to your kit is advisable.

Remember that whether you keep your aromatherapy first aid kit with your regular first aid kit or not, essential oils do always need to be stored in a cool dark place.

Perfumery, How and Why It Evolved Into Aromatherapy Marketing

Posted: 10 Jul 2012 12:01 AM PDT

Aromatherapy
by jspad

Article by Bob G. Johnson

The word perfume comes from the Latin phrase, per meaning "through", and "fumus" meaning smoke." The French later gave the name parfum to the pleasant smells that drift through the air from burning incense. There are few periods of history that have not been influenced by perfume.

In ancient Rome the practice of "strewing herbs" was done to enhance the arrival of the Royal party as they strolled the ancient streets. Rosemary would be strewn in front of the procession so as the Emperor and his entourage advanced they stepped on the rosemary, releasing the essential oils, and the delightful fragrances wafted into the air. To the commoners it added a delightful fragrance to the experience of meeting the rulers of their country.

The practice of enhancing the experience of seeing the Emperor was one of the first recorded times of using aromatherapy as a marketing tool. The sense of smell, coupled with time off, good food & brew, good times was mingled into the experience olfactorily ( big word for 'you can smell it' ). Today Mrs. Field's cookies and many marketeers continue to follow one of the past and best methods to establish sales and brand identity.

The practice of spraying perfume on the body originated in medieval Europe when bathing was outlawed as a religious taboo so the commoners had to deal with an annual bath and in between the terrible problem of body odor. Rose water was an instant hit among the perfume users, owing to its more delicate nature, and since then there has been no looking back for perfumes using flowers. Also, many ancient perfumes were made by just rubbing flowers and sweet-smelling plants on themselves. Today this is still done but in many situations it's done as an insect repellent such as rubbing mint leaves or rosemary on the body to repel flies, mosquitoes and other insects as a repellent, not as an attractant to other humans

Making perfume was also fun. It provided a social outlet for people to gather and share harvests from the field and ! experime nt with differing combinations of ingredients for special aromas. Making perfume is an old art, traceable to ancient Egypt, Rome and Mesopotamia. Once considered the domain of alchemists, the makers of perfume were both feared and revered. Making perfume is a rare craft to learn but for most people a delightful experience to share and enjoy with family and friends.

Plants are by far the largest source of fragrant compounds used in perfumery. The fragrances are derived from what are called the essential oils of the plant, which is also responsible for the taste. Maceration lasts anywhere from hours to months and it was not rare in the "rotten pot" (potpourri) room in the basement in medieval castles for blends of herbs and spices in alcohol to sit for years to perfect the aroma for each room in the castle. Plants are known as the largest source of fragrant compounds used in perfumery. Perfumes of natural origin are made out of complex blends of woods, resins, spices and dispersed often with some form of alcohol.

Aromatic oils of flower petals, fruit peels, or herbs are released when put in rubbing alcohol. The alcohol breaks down the petals, leaves or peels allowing the aromatic oils to be released into a solution. Aromatherapy - smelling essential oils to cure physical and emotional problems - is being revived today.

The very good perfumes are "layered" which is nothing but the fragrance oils are balanced according to their volatility, or rate of evaporation. The heavier oils will remain on the skin throughout the day while the lighter "notes", such as floral smells, evaporate quicker and is the initial fragrance one smells in the application of the perfume but quickly disappears and is replaced by a heavier note. The layering is why the perfume smell in the morning is different than what it is at night. Different oils have evaporated during the day and only the heavier remain by night.
