Why Meditation Is Good For The Brain

A study on mindfulness meditation has proven that meditation has a positive biological effect on the body. The University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States have studied 41 people who have been engaged in mindfulness meditation, which showed results that the practice could boost parts of the brain and the immune system.

Meditation, an ancient procedure from the East, has been a worldwide practice as an avenue to help reduce stress and aid in minimizing pain caused by various illnesses.

The eight-week study focused on 25 participants who regularly attended weekly classes and a 7-hour retreat, with exercises to be followed even at the confines of their own homes. The remaining participants served as a control group who did not receive any meditation training. After the period, the researchers observed a more active electrical activity on the left side of the brain for those who had undergone the meditation classes, associated to lower anxiety level and a more positive emotional state. It was also noted that the participants who underwent meditation had higher levels of antibody.

According to Dr. Adrian White, a doctor of Complementary Medicine of the University of Exeter, "There is increasing evidence that meditations is a useful, and, for some people a powerful therapy. Although further research is warranted on the preliminary study, the study is clearly encouraging and useful for those who may want to engage in meditation.
