Meditating outdoors? Does it really matter where you meditate? I think it can. For some of us, being outside makes for not just a different meditation experience, but a more profound one. There are some good reasons for this.

perhaps meditating in a quiet room with no sounds and nothing to distract is the easiest way, especially for beginners. It's hard enough to quiet your mind without constant input from your surroundings. On the other hand, life is constant input, so if you want the peacefulness that comes from meditation to enter your life beyond your practice, perhaps learning to meditate despite surrounding sounds and movement is just what you need.

Meditating Outdoors

There's a high bank on a river where I lived years ago. It was a five-minute walk from the house. There's a level grassy spot at the top, looking down on the water fifty feet below. That is where I would go to sit. Often there was a breeze I could feel on my skin and hear in the surrounding trees. I also heard the water as it strained through some dead trees near the river bank. I smelled the dirt around me, and the odor of fish coming up from the water.

Meditating there wasn't only pleasurable because of the environment, but also different from meditating in the silence of my home. There was more of a sense of experiencing the world without thought, without over-analyzing. Why? Perhaps simply because there was more to experience. There were the sounds, which included birds, and the occasional splashing of some animal in the river. There were things to smell and the feel of the grass.

I usually close my eyes when I meditate, because I am a very visually-oriented person, and find it easier to meditate this way. When I finished my meditation by the river, I would open my eyes, of course, but what I saw was always different from what was there when I started. Of course it was the same, but I was seeing it differently, as if for the first time. While difficult to explain, this is easy to recog! nize if you have had the experience.

It's wonderful to look around as if seeing for the first time. You are seeing without preconception. I might see a deer on the opposite bank of the river, but the thought "deer" wouldn't cross my mind, meaning it wouldn't cloud my vision with any ideas about what a deer is or should be. The sounds and sensations were also "new." I think this more direct experience of life is a profound demonstration of how much we normally "live" through our thoughts, somewhat detached from reality.

If you haven't already tried it, why not get outside for your next meditation? Sit on a hill or in front of a garden, or try standing in front of a lake or pond when you meditate. The view will be wonderful when you open your eyes. There is nothing quite like meditating outdoors.

Let's start first by defining the foreign word that is yoga. Basically, the word "yoga" is rooted from a language of ancient India where it is originated-the Sanskrit. "Yoga," in Sanskrit, means "union or joining." It can either be a union that occurs between the mind and the spirit, between the body and the spirit or a joining of the mind, body and spirit as a whole. But, the term "yoga" can be accurately defined by another Sanskrit word "asana" - the practice of physical poses or postures. Although "asana" is only one of the eight known types of yoga, both terms are now being taken as one because since both of them are concerned with mental and spiritual well being than in purely physical activity.

Since yoga has been packaged for the Western culture, it is now best described as a general term that includes various disciplines. And now, yoga is more popularly known to people as a form of discipline that varies from one concept to another. The term yoga is now also viewed as a discipline that deals with purely physical abstraction to purely spiritual conquest and to just about everything in between. If you are thinking of practicing yoga to improve your life, you must know hoe to convert its underlying possibil! ities to your own satisfaction.

THE ULTIMATE YOGA BASICSIf you are really interested with yoga, you should be willing to learn almost everything about it. First of all, you should define why you need it. Some of the many different styles of yoga that being taught and practiced today include "hatha ," the slow-paced and gentle style; "vinyasa," the breath-synchronized movement style; "ashtanga," the fast-paced and intense style of yoga practice; "iyengar," bodily alignment style, "kundalini," the breath in conjunction with physical movement style; and "bikram" or "hot yoga" which is practiced in a 95-100 degree room allowing the loosening of tight muscles and profuse sweating.

Aside from being an effective stress and anxiety reducer, practicing of yoga is also proven to increase strength, create energy, build and tone muscles, improve focus, concentration, and posture, reduce blood pressure, improve memory, and relieve pain.

Another basic thing you should know about yoga is that it requires an exertion or force through different poses. Done through the performance of poses, most people might think that yoga is just about stretching, utmost concentration and weird poses. True, you see people practicing yoga doing some sort of "acrobatic" stunts, but those stretching are not just simple flexing of muscles: these are creative processes that balance the body to develop agility, flexibility and strength. Since each pose has a specific physical benefit, the poses in yoga can be done in succession to create heat in the body through movement that will build-up an increase in stamina.

Prenatal Yoga: Calming the Chakras

Yoga has long been hailed as both a great relaxation technique as well as a great form of physical exercise and therapy; yoga therapy for soon-to-be mothers has wonderful benefits, for both the child and the soon-to-be mom. No matter what level of yogi you are, prenatal yoga is a preferred and homeopathic way to prepare for the birthing process; with focus on breathing and stretching, many non-yoga traditional prenatal classes already incorporate yoga techniques. There are different kinds of yoga poses for each trimester stage - so let's take a look.

During the first trimester of pregnancy, yoga therapy is a beneficial and low impact exercise that warms up the muscles while gently stretching them. Prenatal yoga at this stage in the pregnancy is formulated to be easier than non-prenatal yoga classes (taking into consideration morning sickness, etc), so don't stress if you're a beginner. Try to take it easy the first trimester - if you aren't up to going to class, it's okay! Doing yoga at well-spaced intervals throughout your first trimester is a good way to prepare for your second trimester, the time when most pregnant women find yoga to be beneficial.

Prenatal yoga is commonly more practiced throughout the duration of the second trimester and the beginning of the third. During the second trimester of a pregnancy, yoga therapy is ideal because morning sickness (for the most part) is over, and the growing child is still relatively small, allowing the mother to move freely without fear. Doing yoga once a week during the second trimester will strengthen and loosen your muscles for the coming months and perhaps the most critical - the third trimester.

During the third trimester, the hard work put into prenatal yoga from the second trimester will come in handy. It's difficult to move around a lot during this stage, so feel free to lighten up on yoga sessions. Instead, spend time with yoga therapy by focusing on breathing - this will be valuable during birth. During this phase, it's ge! nerally best to avoid any yoga poses that focus primarily on or around the stomach; instead, opt to "play it safe" with a few light stretches and breathing exercises.

Prenatal yoga classes do more than benefit the body; the community and relationships formed during a prenatal class will become a great support system throughout the duration of pregnancy. An essential part of yoga therapy involves tending to the mind; the care and restoration of mind, body and spirit must all be heeded to for true therapy to occur. Look into your local yoga directory - most studios have offer prenatal classes for different levels of yogis, from beginner to experienced. The connections formed during this unique period of time should be taken care of with extra attention, and attending a yoga session is a great way to soothe the mind, body and spirit.

Wondering how people who live to be 100 with a great quality of life do it? In his book, "Aging Well," Harvard researcher, George Vaillant, M.D., found out just what centurions do. They cultivate a sense of peace, well-being and maintain a positive attitude. How? Here's one of their biggest secrets: meditation. What's ironic about meditation is, it has just become known in the West as a healing technique, but it has been practiced for ages in the East. So in my quest to give you easy sensible ways to purify your energy, I'll begin by defining meditation, then I'll show you how easy it is to apply to your daily routine.

Meditation DefinedMeditational exercises primarily use the experience of the body and thought as a means to reconnect with the environment and its healing power. Meditation, when practiced frequently, has been proven to promote inner peace and wellness. Meditation is also a mental practice in which the mind is directed to one area, often the breath. It draws its energy from the human connection to nature and creates a sense of unity or one-ness with it.

This unity has been shown to increase communication with the spirit of the body. It has also been known to allow positive thoughts in and to stimulate positive physiological and psychological effects. Meditation techniques are easy to learn and can easily be incorporated into any lifestyle. If practiced regularly, meditation will bring balance to your body and mind.

General benefits of meditation and breathing exercises include:

* Deep inner peace* Improved self-esteem* Increased creativity* Physical health/healing* Reduced medical care* Slowing/reversal of aging* Reversing of heart disease* Stimulation of the body's immune system* Reduced stress

I have found there is really no one right ways to meditate. Here are a couple of my favorite meditational exercises that will get you started. Remember, there is no wrong path here. Try these, or simply sit in silence for 20 minutes, daily. You'll be glad you d! id.

< p>Meditative Grounding Exercise

* Sit with your legs crossed in a comfortable (Indian-style) position with your hands relaxed on you lap. Close your eyes and imagine a beam of light dropping from the base of your spine through the earth and connecting you to its center.

* Allow this beam of light to expand in width until it is wider than your own body and envelopes it. This is your personal space.

This exercise places you totally in your body and reminds you that you are anchored to the earth. Remember, the more grounded you are, the more aware you are. Sense the presence of your higher self: listen to its voice.

Energy Cleaning Exercise

Now that you are grounded, it's important that you cleanse this personal space. Often we collect other people's energies and are not aware of it. We do this both through interaction with others and basic activities of daily living.

* To remove all foreign energies from your space, imagine holding a brush and sweeping away the debris.

* Allow the debris to fall to the ground and become washed away. Let the light from the previous exercise envelop your body and spread its healing energy to the edge of your space, forming a protective force field around you.

Cleaning out the area surrounding your body will keep you grounded, define your personal boundaries and declare your space. Then choose who and what you wish to enter you space, keeping disease and illness out.

Breathing Exercise

* Follow your breath as you slowly inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Count with each exhale until you reach 10 then begin again at one.

* If you find yourself past 10, acknowledge this and begin again at one from wherever you are.

* Imagine your body's cells being replaced with fresh, pure oxygen and positive healing energy from this power source. Picture yourself exhaling old cells, stress, illness and worries.

* Let your thoughts pass through your mind like drifting clouds. Let them in and gent! ly let t hem pass through. If the mind should harbor a negative thought, refocus on the breath.

* Thank any persistent negative thoughts for coming into your mind then gently let them go.

* Listen only for the positive, pronounced voice; the voice of your body.

Retrieve Your Energy Exercise

Since foreign energy often resides in your space, let's also assume that you leave energy in other places. After completing the preceding exercises it is necessary to re-energize and call energy back.

* Imagine you have an energy magnet used to attract your energy back to you. Visualize energy flowing back to you, filling your body with light, health and empowerment.

* Allow a few minutes for the process.

Journal Questions:

1. Record in your journal any problem or trouble you may be having - emotional, physical or otherwise. Let problems go and give them over to your meditation.

2. Do you notice solutions coming to you throughout the day? Do you notice with regular meditation that your body and mind are becoming calmer and clearer?

Ideas To Consider:

1. Make time for your spirit daily. Exhibit behaviors and self talk that show your reverence for yourself.

A busy executive took leave to attend a meditation course conducted by a well-known saint. At the end of the course, he told the saint, "Revered Sir, I agree that meditation gives peace of mind. It takes out lots of pressure out of our mind. And you say that I need to do meditation at least one hour daily. Sir, we business executives are very busy people. I am unable to spare one hour for meditation!"

The saint replied, "The purpose of meditation is to make your mind pressure-free and pave way for your happiness. If you don't find time for your happiness, continue to live the miserable life!"

Meditation is the best thing that can happen to an individual. Its positive effects are tremendous. It rejuvenates your personality. It totally transforms you. Its ultimate goal is not self improvement, but self-realization, which is a much, much higher level.

Meditation is not done for any result! But results are ingrained in its vibrations. Don't have an iota of doubt about it. It makes your body fit. It tunes your mind. It annihilates the demon in you. It establishes divinity within you. Slowly and steadily, it changes your entire thought process for the better. When your thought process is changed, your action process is also changed.

Meditation sets the process to remove all the negative tendencies within you. In this modern materialistic world, we live the life of many pressures. We cry in anguish, we have forgotten the art of crying in joy. We have created numerous scientific appliances to make our life more miserable. Instead of our using the appliances, the appliances do make use of our life.

Meditation is the only alternative to restore the balance in your life! Whole world including the rich nations of the world has realized that the real road to happiness is through meditation and spiritual exercises. Better late than never!

Meditation is the firing of the light missile within you! Its range is limitless! Its ! purpose is dynamic construction, not mindless destruction! The deeper it penetrates, the more beautiful will be your experiences. It will generate more peace of mind!

Stress is bad for your mental health; there's no doubt about that. But a recent study conducted by researchers at Georgetown University found that it can be equally bad for your weight. The study showed that mice under chronic stress and on a junk-food diet gained twice the weight expected.

Many people face chronic stress every day: at work, at home, at school, you name it. And unfortunately, that overwhelming stress could be having a huge effect on their physical health. If stress and diet are contributing to unhealthy weight gain, then it's important to combat the problem at its source.

Daily stress, daily meditation

One of the best ways to reduce stress is through meditation. The purpose of meditation is to calm the mind and quell worries and anxiety, so by making it a daily habit, you can gradually bring that calm to every area of your life. The only thing meditation requires is that you spend 10 to 20 minutes a day on it, either by doing a breathing meditation or using a meditation tool to calm and focus your thoughts.

This kind of meditation, called mindfulness meditation, keeps you grounded in the present, where you can be completely aware of your current thoughts and actions without worrying about the past or future. Previous research has suggested that it's beneficial not just for stress, but even for depression and chronic pain.

Meditation suggestion

A simple breathing meditation is good for everyday purposes. Find a place that is quiet and holds special meaning for you, either outside or inside, wherever you're most comfortable. Remove any distractions, like alarms and cell phones, and just sit and focus on breathing deeply and steadily.

Don't think about anything else but your breath, how you take in a fresh new one that rejuvenates you, and expelling the old air when you've used it up. Your mind may jump around to other paths at first, but if you keep focused on your breathing, eventually it will settle peacefully into the ! stillnes s.

Come back from your meditation slowly, first by recognizing the smells and sounds of the area around you, and then by gently rotating your fingers, wrists and neck. Whatever meditation you do, walk away with a new sense of calm and serenity.

Meditating for a healthier life

Nothing will take the place of proper diet and exercise for basic health. But if chronic stress is a part of your life, chances are daily meditation could help both your mental and physical health. The more often you meditate, the easier it will be to find that peace in your daily life. Take some time to try it and see if you notice the difference.

William James, psychologist, author and founder of the first American psychology laboratory said: "There is a law in psychology that if you form a picture in your mind of what you would like to be, and you keep and hold that picture there for long enough, you will soon become exactly as you have been thinking."

Mr. James was referencing what we today call creative visualization; the practice of seeking to affect the outer world by changing one's thoughts or images in their mind.

Now, although this may not be news to you, what you may find interesting is how creative visualization combined with meditation can help you increase the effectiveness towards steering your life in a direction more suitable to your liking.

Meditation Advancements

Repeating affirmations and declarations on a daily basis often produce very poor results in the quest for having a more joyful life and manifesting the material things you want. It can be very hard for you to remain "positive" and focused when day after day you're following the same mundane routine of reading your list of affirmations out loud.

However, meditation changes the playing field and magnifies the impact of affirmations because it's done at the level where the conscious mind has taken a backseat to the subconscious mind. This enhanced state of wellbeing promotes greater concentration allowing one to focus more intently on the goal at hand.

Add creative visualization to the mix, along with focusing closely on the end result of what seeking, and you'll find meditation is an amazing way to consistently bring the things, conditions and circumstances you want into your life; whether it be health, wealth, happiness or all of them.

Desire, Belief and Expectancy

Another key to the advancement of meditation is having a clear understanding that your belief, desire and expectancy play an important role in achieving your goals. Without them, you might as well be heading upstream without a paddle.

As in the conscious state of mind, while meditating you must exhibit the desire to obtain your goal, believe you deserve to receive it and expect you will get it with unwavering intent. Anything less is a good sign that you'll come up short and be headed for disappointment.

In addition, it's important to recognize that although meditation can help you strengthen your immune system, reduce stress and relieve anxiety all its own, things like manifesting physical items, mending relationships and improving your health and environment, will require some action on your part.

Scientific Research Leads the Way

Meditation is the natural evolution for mankind and scientific research is slowly helping us understand what's behind it.

For most of us, the mind is an untapped resource which we carelessly disregard. We do this because almost from birth we are taught to rely only on our physical senses. What we don't realize is everybody has the same ability to harness the non-physical power of their mind and use it in a more creative and genius-like way to better them self.

Extensive scientific research from Harvard Medical School, the Brain Imaging Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology repeatedly show us the wonderful physical effects meditation has on the body.

It thickens and enhances areas of the brain which make us more alert, shows clear signs of significantly lowering blood pressure and can reduce the amount of fatty deposits in arteries, just to name a few.

In addition to the wonderful things we see through the scientific community, there are countless numbers of life changing events, healings and manifestations which frequently occur to people who meditate on a regular basis.

Simple mindfulness meditation, where the mind is quieted by focusing on the breath, does wonders for bringing serenity and wholeness to the participant, as well helping to relieve the! externa l pressures induced by our fast-paced society.
