Many of the "quickly certified" Yoga teachers, come to a realization and later join other Yoga teacher programs to be re-educated, and re-certified again, because they, themselves, did not learn about contraindications, modifications, working with special populations (senior citizens, children, students with ailments, less flexible students, handicapped, etc.), Yoga methodology, and a multitude of other previously mentioned Yoga subjects. Unfortunately, these Yoga teachers are often trained to teach Yoga as an exercise program by learning a dozen or two dozen asana, and not much beyond this. The fact is Yoga is much more than an exercise program. Yoga is the most complete health maintenance system known to mankind, with a lineage of thousands of years. Whole health needs to be addressed by much more than an exercise program. On-site training is not cheap and can vary from the low 00.00 range to very expensive. When you consider travel, lodging, and all of the expenses involved a typical Yoga teacher training may well cost you 00.00 or more. Does anyone offer Yoga teacher interns a guarantee? Not often, and as of today, I only know of only one guaranteed Yoga teacher training course in existence. On the other hand, Yoga teacher correspondence courses are much more reasonable, but can vary in the number of study hours and overall quality. For example you can visit http://www.google-friendly-page.com A forty hour Yoga course is just not enough time for anyone to safely learn to teach Yoga students. Once again, you should research the syllabus and get a complete Yoga teacher training course. If you are considering a Yoga teacher correspondence course, you should have sufficient knowledge of Yoga. Also, make sure that customer service is always a priority to the Yoga teacher training center after the sale has been made to the Yoga teacher intern. If you call during business hours and get a live person who answers your questions diplomatically, that will give you some indication of the technical servi! ce you s hould expect. While you are at it, make sure that you are calling a Yoga teacher training center and not a "diploma house." If they certify everything from pet sitting to web design, what do you think they really know about teaching Yoga? Once you have received the study material, there will undoubtedly be questions, concerns, or need for further assistance, via email, or telephone, from the intern who has purchased the Yoga teacher course. Make sure you get answers if you are "stuck" during your Yoga teacher internship. What are your goals in regard to your Yogic career? Plan long term and short term goals, but add your continuing education to both lists or go to http://www.instant-audio-mastery.com At least, make it a point to read Yoga books and watch Yoga DVD's. Audio books are handy too. What is your estimated time frame to become a Yoga teacher? All you have to do is pencil in a realistic deadline. It does not have to be tomorrow and the idea should not create any stress. You should have fun, and "enjoy the journey," when you are working toward your goal of teaching Yoga. What kind of salary can you expect to earn as a Yoga teacher? If you are looking at an hourly rate, anywhere from to 0 is about right in North America. There are many factors involved in pricing, such as demographics and demand. If a Fortune 500 company hires you to teach Yoga, or stress management, to their executive staff, you know the price should reflect your preparation and travel time. Lastly, if you feel the calling to teach Yoga, please do the following. Write your plans down, take action, and go after your goal of becoming a Yoga teacher. The public needs more compassionate Yoga instructors and the job is very rewarding. www.automatic-content.com

First Steps To Meditation

Article by Herbalink

People who are not familiar with meditation, often associates this discipline with the picture of an Indian yogi with his legs crossed in a passive attitude, but there's really much more than that in the act of meditation. Although meditation requires concentration, not only we can meditate sitting or lying down, because there are also very popular meditations that include dynamic techniques such as walking meditation or hatha yoga.

Meditation has profound effects on physical and mental levels. At the physical level provides a deep relaxation of the muscles and nervous system, leading to a level of depth calm that enables us to deal more efficiently with our daily tasks and some unpleasant challenges that some times we have to face in our lives. At the mental level, meditation has a profound impact on our subconscious level and its assiduous practice releases from our psyches, fears, traumas, pains and old emotional wounds that are very difficult to identify through purely intellectual approaches.

It is very common to find people that having practiced yoga and meditation for a while, have overcome certain fears or traumas without specific efforts to achieve this goal. The explanation is that our subconscious fears have unknown causes and these causes are rooted in very deep levels, that are out of our understanding. These seeds are causes of sorrow, pain, compulsive behaviors and uncontrollable fears that were called "samkaras" in Sanskrit and in the modern literature are called "subconscious latencies."

In fact, the mechanism of meditation is very simple and consists in paying attention to something. That "something" to which we are paying attention during meditation is the object of our meditation and every time our mind is involved with other thoughts, we must focus ourselves on the meditation object. During meditation, fears, dislikes, projections or anything else may appear, so we gently order the mind to concentrate again on the meditation object. When the attention bec! omes ver y focused, the impressions of the subconscious are depleted, and the person begins to feel better, as some heavy bales have been released of our lives.

The objects used to meditate are endless, ranging from mantras, breathing, colors, body parts, objects, intellectual concepts, words, and many more. There are also dynamic meditations such as walking or yoga exercises.

In addition to the traditional meditations, some teachers recommend the practice to be concentrated throughout the day. This means a clear awareness of everything we do, say or think. Though it may seem very simple, this change takes us from the realm of unconsciousness, and we begin to have a more harmonious and healthy life.

Take some time and study this topic in more depth. There are a lot of quality resources on the internet and are free. If for some reason you are at psychological or psychiatric treatment, you should not meditate without consulting your doctor.

To Stay Awake While Meditating

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 01:00 AM PST

Article by Jane Michael

People relax when they fall asleep. But even though meditation is calming, you don't want to fall asleep while meditating because you want to receive the complete benefits from meditation. When a person is asleep their brain waves go into the theta and delta ranges, but when meditating the brain waves are mostly in the alpha state. The brain is calm, though alert.

The reason that a lot of beginning meditators fall asleep is that they have not learned how-to bring out the inner awareness-alertness that is like, but not the same as the relaxation response that happens before going to sleep. There are similarities between sleep, mediation, and hypnosis. Energy ebbs from the external senses and the energy focuses on the inner imagery.

It may be easier to mediate after getting up in the morning and not before going to bed when you are tired. Wait until a few hours after eating or mediate before eating. Using drugs and meditating don't work well together.

Never lie down to meditate, as you will probably fall sleep. When you mediate you want to be comfortable, but don't want to encourage drowsiness. Do find another comfortable posture. Do not practice meditation in the place you sleep, if you fall asleep in your easy chair, never meditate there. You don't want to initiate a sleep response.

If you find you are so comfortable that you can't stay awake, try a different posture or create s a bit of discomfort. Something that isn't so irritating, but helps you stay awake. Perhaps, sitting on the floor instead of a chair or trying a less comfortable chair will increase your alertness.

Changing where you meditate might snap your mind wake-- maybe meditating in your backyard or by a lake or at the park. You can try positioning your arms or legs so that they will fall or move when you fall asleep and wake you up.

On the other hand some people use meditation to get their mind quieted before they go to sleep. It can relieve sleep disorders. When someone first begins to practice ! meditati on, they will see how quickly and how many thoughts careen into the mind when they try to still their mind.

If thoughts about troubles, bills, TV shows, work, your relationships etc. flood your mind when you try to fall asleep, then using meditation to control your focus and be serene can help you to fall asleep easier and can keep you calmer during the day.

When someone practices meditating each day, he can learn to be calm and focus his thoughts. This is what happens to the body while meditating: more blood flows to the arms and legs, blood pressure goes down, stress hormone levels lower, brain waves go to the alpha state. These physiological changes occur when the mind is cleared and the thoughts are focused. With practice a person can learn to meditate.

Whether you are having trouble meditating because you are falling asleep or you want to use meditation to fall asleep afterwards it is a practical, useful, and benefit habit.

Bikram/Hot Yoga Tips

Tips on Bikram/Hot Yoga

Bikram Yoga is a good exercise for most people especially those who want to achieve a good mental and physical well-being. The discipline offered by Bikram yoga no matter what type it is will surely help a person become fit and confident about his physique.

Those who practice Bikram yoga believe that a person has to unite body and soul to be able to achieve a higher level of being. Only by uniting his physical with his mental can a person elevate himself to that state where everything is within his control.

The different Bikram yoga poses have their own individual purpose but all of these are aimed at enabling the person practicing yoga to relax and to become flexible and comfortable with his body. A person who is able to find that perfect balance between body and mind will not only be physically fit and healthy but also happy and mentally fit.

Despite the misconception that yoga belongs to the underworld practice of what is mystical, it is really in effect a science that tries to find the connection between the body and the mind in order to achieve physical and mental fitness for its disciples.

Yoga can be beneficial to a person in terms of lessening his pulse rate and blood pressure and in increasing the efficiency of his cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, gastrointestinal and other bodily and organic functions. If you have not noticed it yet, try to observe people who do yoga and you would be impressed with their body posture.

It also helps to empower a harried person into living a life that is less stressful and helps him improve his mood and his attitude towards life, people and events. A person who does yoga will have more ability to accept his actualities in life.

One type of yoga that has caught the interest of some people is Bikram yoga or what they refer to as hot yoga. Bikram yoga is literally a hot yoga because the poses are performed or executed in a room that has been well-heated. Doing the poses in a heated roo! m reliev es the disciple or the follower from the various toxins that has invaded his body by releasing sweat all throughout the session.

The hot yoga style is being promoted by an Indian yoga master named Bikram Choudhury. Choudhury has recently attempted to copyright his Bikram yoga poses and this has led him to become embroiled in a legal battle that has been solved in his favor.

Choudhury claims to have the legal right to the 26 poses used in Bikram yoga and he is posing a heavy legal battle to have the exclusive right to call the practice of hot yoga Bikram yoga. If his legal action becomes successful, Bikram yoga will only be practiced and taught only by his disciples who will follow his method and prescribed yoga environment to the letter.

If his claim goes well, he would be like the franchise owner of the Bikram method and no one would be able to teach Bikram yoga without his two cents worth. This attempt to make Bikram yoga exclusive for him and his disciples has made Bikram a controversial figure in the world of yoga today.

A person who wants to give Bikram or hot yoga a try should arm himself with a durable man slip-proof mat because the high temperature required by Bikram in his hot yoga will be more than enough to keep the yoga follower sweating profusely for the whole session.

It is also very important that a woman who intends to practice Bikram yoga should make sure she is not pregnant to avoid possible negative effects to her health and the health of the unborn baby. Always drink plenty of water before doing the poses, during exercise and even after to avoid dehydration. Also avoid eating at least two hours before the actual yoga exercise.

To be sure, it is best to get the opinion of a doctor before doing the Bikram yoga to avoid health problems and complications later on. To make sure the doctor understands the extent of the risk being taken by a person doing the different yoga pose, he can bring a photo of the poses and show this to the medical expert http://! www.book s4knowledge.co.uk/yoga-at-home-4256-p.asp

Strengthening the Connection With Reiki and Meditation

Meditation
by anna_t

Article by Ryan J Bell

People who are just beginning to learn how to use Reiki to heal themselves and others can gain practical momentum through meditation. Regardless of whether you're earning your first degree or have already become a Master after graduating from a third degree course, meditating pushes you to the next plateau. In fact, many practitioners who have faithfully adhered to the practice's underlying principles claim they began to see a new level of progress only after meditating regularly.

Below, we'll explore the ways in which finding quiet and solitude on a regular basis can strengthen the connection you feel with the Reiki energy. I'll explain the fundamentals of meditation and how you train yourself to schedule time for it. I'll also describe a 3-week program that you can use to contemplate your goals and seek answers.

What Does It Mean To Meditate?

Many people confuse prayer with meditation. It's worth clarifying the difference. Prayer is speaking with God. To meditate is to embark on something entirely different. It is the act of quieting your mind and listening to what God has to tell you. Many Reiki practitioners prefer to begin each day by meditating on how they should use the universal energy into which they tap.

But, it's a mistake to think that meditating must be done according to a schedule. In truth, many of the most revelatory moments are experienced during spontaneous meditation. A lot of Reiki devotees find themselves tapping into hidden stores of spirituality even while doing mundane things like driving, washing the dishes, or exercising. The key is to appreciate the meaning behind meditation and how it fortifies your connection with the Reiki energy.

Finding The Time

There will always be reasons to procrastinate meditating. Our lives are busier than ever and time is a valuable commodity. It's too easy to keep telling yourself that you'll meditate later in the day after you've accomplished everything on your "to do" list. But, that seldom happens. Othe! r things will continue getting in the way.

This is one of the reasons why many Reiki Masters devote time during the early morning to their meditation. They realize that spending time alone and communing with God is critical to being able to focus on their spiritual growth. In doing so, they gain a better understanding about the healing nature of Reiki and the relationship they share with the universe.

A 3-Week Program To Strengthen The Connection

To be sure, there are many approaches to developing the habit of meditation. The program that follows is used by many practitioners because it helps them build the habit while strengthening their focus and spiritual empowerment. It is a 3-week process through which you can open your mind to your connection with the universe's healing energy.

Week 1 - During the first week, you'll concentrate on the Usui symbol of power. Each day will start with a specific question. Find a quiet, secluded place and meditate on the symbol for 20 minutes. Keep a small legal pad nearby to write down any notes that form in your mind during your session. They can include words or symbols. It is not important that you understand your notes; rather, it is important that you record them.

Week 2 - The second week will focus on the mental and emotional symbols of Usui. Each day will begin with another question. As before, meditate on the symbols for 20 minutes in a secluded area where you will not be disturbed. Keep your legal pad nearby and record any thoughts or images that appear in your mind.

Week 3 - The last week focuses on the distant healing symbol of Usui. You'll spend the entire week meditating on this symbol for 20 minutes each day. Write down any notes on your legal pad.

Ideally, the above program should be used by students and practitioners who have passed the second degree of training. Those who have become Reiki Masters can add to the program by including additional symbols. Remember, the first step is building the habit. Only then can you t! ruly con nect with the universe and explore that connection with the Reiki energy.

Your mind is a center of continuous conflicts. Different parts of body, mind, emotions and energies conflicts with one other. Lack of harmony within you causes friction which results in negative emotions of anger, hurt, frustration, disappointment etc.

Meditation is a process through which you can resolve conflicts within in your mind and you can achieve calm, poise, and rest. Your brain becomes more efficient and creative. Meditation is a best pill which solves all the problems of modern life.

Meditation is a process through which we attain a state of being good. There is a saying "a human is born crying, live complaining, suffering and dies disappointed." However a meditative mind stops complaining, suffering, starts appreciating, enjoying the life and he remains deathless with his consciousness.

The primary urge of everyone is to know "Who am I". This urge continues to linger and remain unresolved. We remain doubtful as to the purpose of our life and its continuity. Meditation drives away all such doubts and brings about awareness and transformation of fearless life and delightful living.

In your prayer you communicate with the higher self (God). You talk to him and send messages. However in meditation you experience, feel the higher self within you and therefore there is no need send to messages elsewhere. Meditation is therefore a highest form of prayer with much more benefits.

When you are child your body, mind and emotions work with unity. This is the original nature of human beings. If you wish to play, you play. If you wish to dance, you dance. You smile and cry as a response to your emotions but you don't remember or recollect your suffering and feel bad again and again over and over.

In nutshell you live in present and the parts of you i.e., mind, body, emotions, work harmoniously. This means you are playful always. As we grew up we give up this original nature and playing is replaced by suffering. While y! our mind moves in one direction, your body moves in another direction, your emotions move in one other way. It is like four wheels of car running in four different directions. Meditation brings about uniformity and brings about your original nature. It is like going to your old school to play once again.

Modern life demands us multiple responsibilities and multiple tasks and therefore our mind is restless ceaselessly. Meditation or meditative life is essential to neutralize the effects of modern life.

Meditation is nothing but living in present, absorbing in the activity which we are pursuing. It is conscious living. In simple terms you are absorbed in the activity of whatever you are doing. Eat consciously, drink consciously, take bath consciously, and work consciously list is endless....... When your actions are conscious you are no longer worry about the future. You are deeply absorbed in the activity. You are neither guilty of the past events nor worried about the future. When you are eating a sweet, you are enjoying sweetness of it. This is nothing but childlike play.

The person who practices meditation becomes true humanitarian. He loves others through the realization of oneness of universe. He is so compassionate, feel through other hearts, and think through other minds. He adorns the qualities of humility and unselfishness. Meditative mind is conflict free, fear free, and ego free. It is manifestation of godliness within us.

I must tell you meditation is something we cannot understand fully. Though you understand with your intelligence, it is of no use for you unless you practice and experience it. Any quantity of explanation of sweetness of sweet does not give you satisfaction to you unless you put a piece of sweet into your mouth and experience the sweetness of it directly. Meditation is thus experiential. It is not conceptual.

Our life is meant for joyful experience. Modern life made it miserable. Hence practice Meditation regularly. Become! childli ke. Become lively.

Yoga for Weight Loss?

Article by Zach Hunt

Yoga is gaining popularity around the nation. It's very posh to have a yoga mat tucked under your arm, with your gym bag slung over your shoulder as you casually quip "I'm off to my yoga class." But is yoga your best bet for weight loss?

Well to answer that we need to find look at what it takes to lose weight. To lose weight you need to raise your heart rate to about 65% of it maximum heart rate threshold (To find out how to figure your maximum heart rate threshold read my blog, What is Your Fat Burning Heart Rate?)

So the answer is yes you can lose weight by doing yoga if it elevates your heart rate sufficiently. Which brings us to the next question, which yoga raised the heart rate enough to bring about weight loss?

If you have ever Gooogled yoga you have found out that there are several types of yoga with a seemingly endless number of yoga classes available in. But the question remains, which types are best for weight loss.

The Top 3 Types of Yoga for Weight Loss

Of all the different types of yoga these three are the best for weight loss.

Ashtanga Yoga is a very intense and vigorous yoga. It is very physically demanding because it is comprised of a series of poses performed in a particular order in a particular rhythm. Since you are moving constantly from one pose to the next your heart rate remains in its target range for fat burning. So Ashtanga yoga is a good type of yoga for those wanting to lose weight.

Power Yoga is a more intense, fitness focused version of vinyasa-style yoga that is breath based movement. Power yoga is very much like Ashtanga yoga except it doesn't follow a set series of poses. Power yoga poses are performed in various order thus allowing classes to be different from class to class. Power yoga appeals to people who are practicing yoga from more of a fitness than a spiritual point of view.

95 - 100 degree room is what is needed for Birkram vinyasa-style yoga. Birkram Yoga is a term reserved for teachers who have studied th! e Birkra m style of hot yoga. Birkram Yoga is a type of Hot yoga that is similar to Ashtanga yoga and consists of a series of 26 poses. Hot yoga is very intense and physically demanding. greater flexibility and deep stretching are at the root of yoga.

Only you can determine what your wellness goals are. Typically yoga is a spiritual based holistic approach to wellness, encompassing mind, body and spirit. Therefore most styles of yoga are aimed at strengthening all three aspects of the person or specific aspects of the person breath and movement but not rigorous activity.

Real Weight Loss Answers

If you are practicing a slower paced type of yoga and want to lose weight then you should look at other ways of training for weight loss.

Meditation and mandala healing for mental health

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 05:00 PM PST

Article by Cat Williams

Mandala healing is not one of the most well known forms of alternative healing. However, the integration of a mandala image into a meditation session can certainly boost the effectiveness of the process. That is why the concept of mandala healing deserves a closer look.

Meditation has long since been used as a means of promoting proper restorative mental health benefits. When a person meditates, it becomes possible to calm and relax the mind. This can put an end to much of the psychic noise that is present within the deep recesses of the mind. Now, this is not to say that meditation alone will cure all mental and emotional ills one may possess. Yet, it can definitely help in many regards towards calming the mind and allowing the healing process to take place.

Some may have certain preconceived notions as to how meditation is performed. They will often look at meditation from the traditional perspective of performance in the Zazen position. While this is most definitely a helpful means in which to perform meditation, there are various other ways meditation can be performed effectively. For example, walking and moving meditation is quite popular and so are two-person meditative drills as well. Then, there is also the lesser known process of integrating mandala healing into the process of meditation.

In traditional Zen meditation practices, koans are used to enhance the meditation process. Koans are parables without clear meanings that are meant to be pondered. With mandala healing, a painting or other artistic image or symbol is what is to be pondered upon.

What exactly is a mandala and how is it possible to integrate its symbolism with mandala healing? It is a circular diagram that originated in Hinduism and has found its way into Zen Buddhism. In time, the mandala was heavily integrated into tantra meditation practices. In the most simplistic terms this involves looking into the imagery and outside of the natural world. In essence, you will look beyond yourself and into th! e mandal a to fully maximize your meditative experience.

So, where can you acquire a mandala? This is the fun part: you can make one yourself. No, that does not mean you need to be the most talented artist in the world or even possess a modicum of artistic skills. You simply need to have the basic ability to craft a decent mandala based on words and symbols that are meaningful to you.

When you meditate upon mandala imagery that you have created, you will be doing so in a highly personal manner. That will allow the mandala healing process to achieve its highest level of perfection since it has been deliberately tailored to your specific needs and goals. This will greatly enhance the entire meditation process and make it far more effective.

Try out Mandala healing by creating a simple circle and filling it with a word or basic symbol that has meaning to you. Color it in with your favorite colors, taking time to enjoy this creative process. Then when its done, tape it the the wall, sit comfortably and meditate on your new mandala for 15 minutes. You will find yourself feeling refreshed and calm and thats what mandala healing is all about.

Article by issa

Many people are curious about the art of yoga, but feels intimidated to even start learning the very basics. The very word brings images of contorted bodies that many expert yogist can achieve. To some, it can even imply a guru-lingo they just don't feel comfortable with. No matter what the reason is, yoga seems to be something that many people think they will struggle with, specially when they feel they're not spiritually prepared to go through with it.

It is true that yoga needs a lot of patience and dedication. It is not only a practice of having your bones and muscles stretched and toned, but it is your very road to self-discovery. All those yoga poses doesn't only release all those tensed feelings you've been harboring from within, but it can lead to an awakening of your true potential as a human being.

Yoga came from the Sanskrit word, meaning " union. " When done properly, it will not only give you that tone, flexible body you've always wanted, but also helping you reach enlightenment. Yoga is something you learn by doing to the point that it becomes an integral part of your life. What's great about yoga is that it can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age, sex, or race. You don't have to over-exert while practicing yoga, where you are in total control of the way your body will adapt to changes.

Why Should You Get Into the Yoga Habit?

1. Yoga will promise you not only flexibility, but helps you build muscle strength. Many people have attested to the physical health benefits that yoga had brought into their lives. The various yoga poses and breathing techniques help your body maximize oxygen and blood flow, making your cells healthier while making your mind clearer. This is why many have reported a sense of elation after a yoga session. It just feels so reviving.

2. Yoga is your safer alternative to heavy Cardio exercises that can do damage to your back. Just respect your body's limits and you're good to go. Unlike other ! exercise s where you need to speed up, you can just slow down as long as you want.. until you feel you have perfected that pose.

3. Yoga doesn't require athletic skills on your part for you to practice it. In fact, yoga is a great stress-buster after a day's grueling work and you can just put on that DVD on your player and do some stretches at the comforts of your own bedroom. You may also try joining yoga classes under a professional instructor if you feel like doing yoga in a group is more inspiring.

Which Yoga Style is Good for You?

Hatha Yoga - this is commonly practiced by many, which is easiest to do. It involves a combination of movements, postures, and breathing techniques for you to achieve wellness.

Raja Yoga - this involves breathing techniques and exercises, coupled with meditation. This is great for those who want to achieve spiritual wellness as well.

Bikram Yoga - more often known as hot or fire yoga. This is practiced in a room heated at 105 degrees Fahrenheit, preparing the body for deep stretching, detoxification, and tension release. Speak with your physician if you suffer high blood pressure, migraines, or heart ailments before you walk in for a session.

Jnana Yoga - considered the most difficult, practitioners consider it as a path to wisdom and enlightenment.

Bhakti Yoga - this yoga focuses on the idea of God.

Iyengar - this yoga focuses on body posture and alignment. Props like chairs, blocks, blankets, and belts are used for students to achieve progressive poses safely and effectively.

Ashtanga - more challenging than Hatha yoga, it teaches students a unique movement or breathing technique that will force your body to sweat and cleanse out all those body toxins.

Power Yoga - this is a vigorous style that is more fitness-based and is perfect for people who want to workout, as well as build flexibility and body strength.

Remember that yoga is not a religion, but a ! way for you to achieve your own sense of inner peace and well-being from within. Coupled with a healthy diet, lifestyle, and natural choices, yoga can definitely give you the clearest mind and a stronger body than you can ever dream of. Namaste!

Yoga DVDs 101 - Spirituality While Your Getting Fit

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 03:00 PM PST

Article by Joshua Killingsworth

The sheer availability of yoga DVDs says something to the popularity of the practice. Because yoga is part of a larger Hindu tradition whose goal is spiritual enlightenment through use of the body and the breath, the original yogis never had firming their things, building muscles, or getting six-pack abdomens in mind when they developed the practice. Yet because the industry of fitness videos often gears itself toward a weight- and muscle- conscious demographic, we see yoga DVDs advertised accordingly. Thankfully, most instructors in the DVDs do get at the spiritual components of the practice, even though the yoga media market does not reflect the full breadth of lineages. We see four main kinds of yoga represented in instructional DVDs: Vinyasa Yoga, Power Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, and Prenatal Yoga.

Vinyasa, Power, Kundalini, and Prenatal Yoga fall under the umbrella of Hatha Yoga, which is represented most basically in the standard Vinyasa DVDs. Hatha yoga begins with a series of progressive asanas, or poses, which form a sequence called a vinyasa. The vinyasas then give way to more held poses, balances, and inversions. The Hatha Yoga practice always ends with a back-bend, and then finally, shavasana, or final resting pose. This sequence just described is always central to Vinyasa DVDs, and largely informs the other DVDs, as well.

Power Yoga, traditionally called Ashtanga, involves a faster, more strenuous form of Yoga similar to Vinyasa Yoga. Often advertised as a fat-burning yoga, Power Yoga is designed to create more heat in the body, make you sweat more, and even to provide a challenging cardiovascular workout. The ultimate goal of Ashtanga Yoga is of course stillness of mind, which the instructors of the DVDs will share. Marketing, however will probably gear these DVDs toward building muscle and burning fat.

Kundalini Yoga, which is said to be the first kind of yoga ever developed, has also become popular in the mainstream DVD market. Although part of the Hatha family of yog! a, it ma y appear quite different. The poses of Kundalini Yoga often flow more whimsically from one position to the next, evoking the notion of play. The goal of Kundalini Yoga is to awaken the Kundalini, or coiled serpent-like energy at the base of the spine.

Prenatal Yoga DVDs are also quite popular, and the practice has emerged as its own form of yoga. First developed for adolescent boys, a traditional Hatha Yoga practice is not compatible with the changing body of a pregnant woman. Although pregnant women can use regular Yoga DVDs, they ought to be aware of the modifications used in prenatal DVDs so that they can experience the benefits of yoga, while being good to the little yogi growing inside.

Using yoga DVDs can give you a taste of the different forms of yoga, and is certainly the less expensive option. For the full experience of yoga, many instructors and practitioners, alike, will maintain that nothing competes with having a teacher guide your practice.

Kundalini Yoga for Stress Relief

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 01:00 PM PST

Article by Karan Khalsa

Kundalini Yoga is one of the spiritual types of yoga that goes beyond the physical performance of asanas. With its emphasis on breathing, meditation and chanting - Kundalini Yoga creates a conscious connection with the Divine by removing all the obstacles and fluctuations of the mind. It raises the energy of our inner self to a higher frequency and opens our awareness to realize the ultimate peace. Kundalini lies at the base of the spine and is represented as a coiled serpent. As the Kundalini energy is awakened, it moves up from the base of the spine from Muladhara Chakra to the Sahasrara Chakra located at the top of the head.

The untapped energy or Prana within a human being can be awoken by awakening each of the seven chakras (Muladhara Chakra, Svadhishthana Chakra, Manipuraka Chakra, Anahata Chakra, Visuddha Chakra, Ajna Chakra and Sahasrara Chakra) through postures, movement, specialized breathing, hand gestures, body locks, chanting and sound. Full enlightenment of an individual is attained when the Kundalini energy reaches the Crown Chakra (Sahasrara Chakra). Kundalini Yoga strengthens and tones the nerves, glands and organs of the body and finally draws the mind and senses to an inward experience of deeper state of consciousness. Kundalini Yoga helps an individual to attain a feeling of bliss and awakens his dormant spiritual force.

Meditation Methods and Techniques

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 11:00 AM PST

Article by calismith

The stressful lives we run at present take their toll on our physical condition. Mental stress and substantial fatigue drain us of our positive energy leaving us washed-out physically, mentally and emotionally. Once considered to be alternative medicine, meditation is definately improving popularity amongst regular medical practitioners. Meditation, which is understood to hold a certain effect along with the allopathic medicines prescribed for quite a few medical conditions.

Meditation is not exactly a challenge, if you put your mind to it. Sometimes, we just have to be aware of how it is done and the benefits it could do to us. We don't have to be engaged in intense meditation to achieve its effects, all we have to do is have some time for ourselves and focus our mind on something positive. Being positive and repeating affirmations in our life could also help.

Both physical and mental benefits can result from meditation. This can include increased heart health through relaxation, lowered cholesterol and blood pressure, and a more youthful feeling. Mental benefits can be an increased sense of well-being, decreased anxiety and depression, and emotional stability. Meditation should not be used as a cure for physical or mental ailments, however, but it can be a powerful supplement.

Yoga and meditation are practices that help your body to renew itself naturally. The yoga helps to do so physically while the meditation helps to do so mentally. The satisfaction that one gets after doing a session of yoga and meditation is unparalleled. Hence people are getting slowly and slowly gravitated towards these forms of natural healing.

The methods used by the Vissuddimargga meditation work by trying to subdue the mind. Sahaja Yoga says that instead of trying to subdue or control the mind, which is almost impossible anyway, why not ignore it and simply go beyond it. The Sahaja Yoga meditation is described as thoughtless awareness. Normally it is virtually impossible to do this but in Sah! aja Yoga your kundalini simply takes you straight into thoughtless awareness.

Meditation has been established as having beneficial effects to patients with cardiovascular disease. Patients with high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure have been tested with various meditative methods, and results were promising. Even in the field of respiratory medicine, meditation has aided patients with asthma. All the more has meditation helped in the realm of psychology and behavior.

Meditation techniques are of many types, but they have a common goal. The main objective is to clear the conscious mind, so that we can gain access to the depths of the subconscious mind and be free of all conditionings.

Meditation is an actual healing process that can not hurt you, but it can have a wide range of beneficial results, in exchange. As opposed to medications and other treatments, meditation does not come along with a package of side effects. So, basically, none of the free meditation techniques can do you any wrong. The only thing they can do is to be more or less efficient.

Is Meditation Hippy Non-sense Or Good For Your Health?

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST

Article by Gen Wright

p>Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. While it has traditionally been used by people seeking a greater understanding of life, meditation has become a popular tool for relaxation, stress reduction, and maintaining overall good health.

The act of meditating is one of those rare things that does not require any type of special equipment or clothes in order to be done properly. All you need is a few minutes of time and enough room to sit (or stand) by yourself and concentrate.

What is Meditation?

Meditation is a process that helps you to focus your attention so that you can reach a state of mental and emotional calm. It can be done pretty much anywhere, and it is a very useful tool for those occasions when you are feeling overwhelmed by too much information or a stressful or tense situation.

How Meditation Benefits Us

Meditation can not only help you to feel calm, it can also bring a sense of peace and emotional well being into your life. In fact, meditation can also help to improve some medical conditions.

Practicing meditation can provide you with the following emotional and mental benefits:

Better overall stress managementNew perspectives on stress situationsGreater sense of self-awarenessDecrease in negative thoughts and emotionsSharper focus on what is going on in the present

In addition, meditation can offer you some relief from certain medical conditions, including:

Sleep problemsAnxietyFatigueHigh blood pressureAllergiesCancerPainHeart diseaseDepression

The reason that meditation is so helpful for these conditions is that they are all negatively impacted by stress. If you suffer from one or more of these conditions and you routinely feel stressed out, you will be far more likely to experience greater, or more severe, symptoms.

Of course, there has not been enough research conducted in order to be able to draw any definitive conclusions about meditation, and it should n! ot be th ought of as a replacement for the treatments that have been prescribed for you by your doctor. It is, however, an excellent addition to your regular course of treatment, as reducing the amount of stress in your life promotes good health in a variety of different ways.

Successful Meditation

In order to successfully meditate, you will need to incorporate four different factors into your efforts.

Get comfortable - regardless of whether you are sitting, standing, or walking around, you can meditate. Find a quiet location - this is particularly important if you are a beginner to meditation. Once you have some experience at it, you will likely find that you can meditate successfully pretty much anywhere.Focus your attention - this is what actually helps you to clear your mind from all of the stresses and worries that may have your stress levels soaring. When trying to focus, it is sometimes helpful to concentrate on one particular object.Learn relaxed breathing - deep, even breathing that comes from your diaphragm muscle helps your lungs to expand. This will help to slow your breathing and increase your oxygen intake.

Just remember, there is no right or wrong way to meditate. Experiment with it until you find a process that works for you, then stick with it. Practicing meditation regularly will help you to achieve a more relaxed outlook on life and may also help you to improve some health issues. Regardless if your a hippy or not.

Meditation Guided Anxiety Relief

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 09:04 AM PST

Article by Irwin Myers

Meditation guided regimes lead to several positive changes in your wellness and state of being. Aside from relieving stress and anxiety, the benefits of a regular guided meditation schedule increase gradually the longer you continue meditating (over a length of time, not per meditation session). If you aim specifically to reduce nerves or anxiety, a focus on breathing in your meditation might be just the track to try.

If you already practice meditation guided techniques, you already know the importance of having a serene meditation area. This is the place where you carry out your meditation sessions, and you should pick a place in which you will hopefully be able to meditate without disruption. Another important aspect that is just as personal as the meditation area is your posture while meditating. You may want to try out a variety of postures and poses while meditating to know that you have found the perfect fit. From sitting on the floor in full lotus to lying down on your bed, the many posture options available should be dictated more by comfort than by style. You may think a certain pose seems good for meditating only to find that it does not work for you.

Before beginning any breathing exercise for meditation guided sessions, take a moment and let yourself get adjusted to your meditation stance while your mind clears and calms down. When you notice that your mind is not racing with thoughts, it is time to start the breathing exercise. Close your eyes and take several natural breaths. These should be deep, but still natural, as you do not want to overwork your body and distract yourself from your meditation. Breathing through your nose, inhale and count to seven silently. You will then exhale through your mouth while mentally counting to seven again. Repeat this pattern until you feel that all excess thoughts have left your mind, but being careful not to hyperventilate.

Try meditating for at least twenty minutes a day to receive the maximum benefit from your work, but even ! ten minu tes of breathing exercises can be incredibly helpful. You can even do a few sets of this breathing pattern when you feel overwhelmed by stress throughout the day.. When your mind focuses on the control of something as natural as breathing, it helps you make sense of the more complicated aspects of your life, which in turn reduces your anxiety through a practice that is meditation guided.

Yoga Meditation: 5 Must-Know Yoga Meditation Techniques To Enhance Your Serenity

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 09:00 AM PST

Article by Amy C.

Of all the types of meditation, the meditation that originated from Hinduism is the main type. In Hinduism, the meditation is known as yoga. " The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means "to join" or "to yoke:" the related meaning is "to focus attention on" or " to use".

The main aim of yoga is to restore the mind to simplicity and peace, and free it from confusion and distress. "Yoga is the human quest for remembering our true nature, our deepest selves". There are number of branches of yoga: Bhakti yoga, Mantra yoga, Karma yoga, Hatha yoga, and Tantra yoga.

Bhakti yoga is the yoga of devotion. Bhakti yoga is the most natural path for those who are dominantly seeking emotional fulfillment and well being. The person practicing bhakti yoga is called "bhakta". The "bhakta" usually practices meditation by visualizing, thinking and feeling that the Lord is sitting or standing before him. The "bhakta" pours out his heart's love and shares his deepest thoughts and concerns with the Lord until a continual flow of awareness moves between devotee and the beloved Lord.

Mantra yoga is the yoga of sound. Mantra yoga makes use of sound to harmonize the body and focus the mind. It works with mantras, which can be a syllable, word, or phrase. "Yogi use mantras to achieve deep states of meditation and to invoke specific states of consciousness, and they believe that a mantra expressing a particular aspect of the divine will help to awaken that aspect of their own consciousness".

Karma Yoga is the yoga of selfless action. Karma means action. Karma yoga practitioners believe that all actions whether bodily, vocal, or mental have far reaching consequences for which we must assume full responsibility. Karma yoga is meditating on living life so purely that people perform no hurtful or sinful actions.

Hatha yoga is the yoga of physical discipline. Hatha yoga is the practice of harmonizing the body's inner currents until they are in perfect balance.! The wor d hatha is a Sanskrit combination of the word ha (sun) and tha (moon), which is itself a union of opposites. Hatha yoga incorporates breathing exercises (pranayamas), stretching and strengthening exercises (asanas), and meditation.

Tantra yoga is the yoga of continuity. Tantra yoga is the mastery of kundalini, a powerful spiritual energy that resides within everyone. Tantra yoga focus on awakening and applying kundalini, the tremendous physical, chemical, and electrical energies of the body, that concentrated in certain nerve plexuses located in specific parts of the body called chakras (wheel of light), and transmitting signals up and down in spinal column. According to tantra yoga belief, there are seven chakras running up the spinal column. Meditating on each chakra will activate its power that gives certain abilities and benefits. "Your energy body is part of you, but not part of your physical body. It is the layer of you consisting of the energy that flows in and around your body, through your nadis, and concentrates in your chakras"

Meditation Guided Techniques for Children

Posted: 11 Jan 2012 08:15 AM PST

Article by Irwin Myers

Meditation guided activities are generally associated with adult use, but really there is no reason not to bring your children in on your meditation sessions. In fact, children may be more susceptible to the benefits of meditation than adults are, so putting your kids on the guided meditation track is not only a great family activity, but also provides them with a great background of spiritual activity that they can carry into adulthood.

Children tend to have shorter attention spans than adults, so if your children do not sit rigidly still while you try to teach them to meditate, do not fight it. You can still guide their thoughts with regular meditation guided techniques, even if they fidget. It is another matter if they want to get up and do something else. Be patient with the kids, as they might not understand the purpose of meditating. They will come around soon enough.

Before beginning, you should explain what meditating is about and what exactly you will be doing. Be sure to explain why it is an important activity. You might want to give specific examples of how meditation guided work has helped you in the past, and how it can help your child right now.

If your child's thoughts wander while trying to meditate, allow it. This is your child's natural creativity coming through, and creativity is an excellent asset to have while meditating. You can even take these wandering thoughts and turn them into mantras for your child. However, you may want to facilitate the use of meditation music to help keep them a little more focused.

Whatever breathing exercises or other relaxation methods you use before meditating will be just as helpful for your children. While you may use a meditation guided CD or DVD to help you meditate, your children will generally respond best if you give them directions. If you want to give them the same instruction you receive, you can simply rephrase your guided meditation directions in your own words so that your children will feel at ease.

It woul d probably be a good idea to emphasize visualization and mental imagery techniques, as your children will likely respond to these more concrete aspects as opposed to some of the more abstract concepts. You may want to consider giving children meditation beads or stones after some initial sessions, as this can give them something tangible to work with as they become increasingly meditation guided.
