Meditation And Its Effects On Mind Body And Spirit

Meditation
by anna_t

Article by C. Gray Flynn

For anyone who meditates, they know that it is a seriously life changing practice. Meditation can: increase your life span, improve your health, reverse signs of ageing, boost brain function, increase performance, make you happier, bring you peace, give you greater insight and give you greater control over your life to achieve the success you want. Meditation reveals the truth of things and enables you to manifest the life you want.

It sounds to good to be true, but it is well known that all the great sages known through history used meditation to actualise their potential and reach the great heights that they did. What is also true is that we now live in an age where the secret power of meditation is no longer hidden from ordinary folks. And for anyone who seriously wants to step up his or her life, meditation is a way. Easy right? Well yes and no. It is true that meditation is a discipline, and dedication to it brings tremendous rewards. But, like any discipline, meditation takes time to master.

The mind is constantly busy with what I call mental noise. Without even realising it, it is running a constant stream of thoughts to our subconscious mind. The trouble with this is that, for most of us, the thoughts tend to be around stressors and negatives in our lives, and because the brain keeps running these thought without thinking about it, it literally becomes addicted to these thoughts, and in turn these thoughts create more stressors, which in turn feeds these negative thought patterns again. Its not that we want to think these things, they cause us pain, but our brains have become patterned to these thoughts and has no other 'programme' to run - unless we give it one. Now trying to change our programming is very hard to say the least. This is where meditation comes in. Meditation will literally wipe out those programmes. In time, your mind will become tranquil, and with that tranquillity your life, as you know it, will change. You will become attuned to the real you. You will be ! on your way to actualising your greatest potential.

Now I know this may seem like a grand statement, but I promise you, it is true. Since meditating regularly, my life has literally opened up. I possess a calm I never thought I would have. This benefit alone is enough, but this is just the beginning. It is as if the doors of possibility have swung open right in front of me and life is presenting to me on a whole new level. I am realising I can have exactly what I want now.

I also realise that the idea of sitting quietly for an hour a day might seem impossible to some. For me it took quiet a long time to actually dedicate myself to it as a discipline. But since doing so, I have come across a new meditation technique that makes the benefits of meditation so much easier to achieve and it has to do with certain sound frequencies. Without getting too technical, the benefits of meditation are a result of the brain being conditioned into certain brain wave states and what science has discovered is that the brain can be entrained to enter into these brainwave states by certain sound frequencies, otherwise known as binaural beats.

The scientific term for this is Brainwave Entrainment and it is basically meditation made easy with all the benefits of disciplined meditation. Brainwave Entrainment (binaural beats) put you into deeply relaxing meditative states (alpha, theta and delta) and it is in these brainwave states that the mind is reconditioned to the benefit of the listener as follows:

PHYSICAL/HEALTH BENEFITS: It 'grows' the brain by thickening the connections between the corpus callosum. It lowers blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, reduces metabolic rate, boosts the immune system, smoothes the skin, and releases youth hormones DHEA and Melatonin, while reducing the degenerative hormone Cortisol.

MENTAL/EMOTIONAL BENEFITS: Most people's brains work in mono, meaning that one side of the brain dominates, but by increasing the connections between the two hemispheres through meditation ! or brain entrainment, the brain actually begins to work in stereo. It is believed that the brains of the world's greatest thinkers worked in this way. By causing the brain to dip into Alpha, Theta and Delta states more frequently, mental clarity peaks, creative thinking is enhanced, as is intuition. Through regular use stereoscopic brain functioning puts one into peak performance states by getting the two sides of the brain to work together rather than individually. Fortune 100 companies, leading world minds and NASA are all known to use brain entrainment to engage peak performance levels. A relaxed mind causes a sense of well being, mental stress subsides, mental clarity increases. It causes the mind to calm down, become clear, and can even bring about a sense of elation. This is the optimal state for succeeding in whatever you are focused on. This is key, for focus is the key to changing your life, and brain entrainment and meditation train the brain to become more focused.

Knoxville Yoga Teacher Training

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 03:00 AM PST

Article by David E Morgan

Yoga is becoming more and more popular in Knoxville, TN. The need for trained yoga teachers who have completed a qualified yoga teacher training (YTT) or yoga teacher certification (YTC) program is also increasing. (Yoga Teacher Training and Yoga Teacher Certification mean the same thing, the title of the program depends on the preference of the yoga school.)

To fill this gap to get more certified yoga teachers, there are now several yoga teacher training programs in the Knoxville area.

What to look for in a Knoxville Yoga Teacher Training program

1. The most important thing to look at when researching yoga teacher training programs in Knoxville is, who is the director of the teacher training? Have you studied with this person and do you like their style? Does their philosophy of yoga resonate with you? Are they easily accessible? Do they live by the words they speak, or at least try to?

2. Next, look at training dates for your Knoxville yoga teacher training. Do the dates fit your schedule? Some yoga certification programs offer the whole training at once, some offer it on weekends only, and others offer weekend trainings in combination with some yoga teacher training requirements through the week.

3. Can you afford the yoga teacher training, or are there payment plans or scholarships available to make your yoga training more manageable?

4. Is the yoga teacher training offered at a Registered Yoga School (RYS) through the Yoga Alliance? The Yoga Alliance is the most respected yoga organization in the country. If you're serious about learning and teaching yoga, then do yourself a favor and go for a 200-hour Yoga Alliance-recognized program at a Registered Yoga School.

Why Do Your Yoga Teacher Training in Knoxville, TN?

Unless you want to be part of a lineage of yoga like Ananda, Kundalini, Kripalu, Sivananda, Kriya, and so on - where you will need to go to a yoga center or ashram outside of the Knoxville area to study - it is a good i! dea to s tudy hatha yoga in the area you intend to teach yoga. Iin this case, we're talking about studying and teaching yoga in Knoxville, TN.

Why? Because the local Knoxville yoga school will have insight into how to reach people in the area, how to market to them, and how to attract people to your classes once you graduate from your yoga training program. If the yoga teacher training has a service project as part of the requirements, some of the people you meet in your community classes may very well become your first clients. Not to mention, a director from the Knoxville area will have a list of connections for places you can contact and possibly teach once you graduate from the YTT. You'll also get support from the people you go through training with once the program is finished, because most of them will live in the area. You'll become lifelong friends with many of your fellow yoga teacher trainees.

In the case of Knoxville, where yoga is behind the growth curve of the East and West Coasts, the majority of students in yoga classes are beginners. That means the focus of your 200-hour basic yoga training should be at least in part on how to teach safe classes to beginners. Once you have completed a 200-hour training and built a base of students who have started yoga with you, it will be easier to target niche audiences as your interests and the interests of your students grow.

Deepest State of Meditation - 3 Secrets to Help You Improve Your Meditation

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 11:00 PM PST

Article by Alex Lee

With so many different techniques, choosing and starting a Meditation sometimes becomes a tough chore. Most beginners find it hard to enter state of meditation, that is when one's brain wave enter the Alpha state. This state is where one's brain wave is at 8 Hz - 12 Hz or light relaxation state. Deeper state of meditation is achieved when one's brain wave is reduced between 4 to 7 Hz, this is the Theta state or deep relaxation state. However, the deepest state of meditation is when one's brain wave reaches between 0,5 - 3 Hz. This is called Delta state, the lowest human brain wave and is considered as deepest state of meditation.

One could get the most benefit of Meditation if he or she gets into Alpha or Theta state. In these states, not only physical body gets the benefit, one's spiritual growth will also be accelerated. Here are 3 secrets to enter these states.

First secret: understand the ultimate goal of Meditation itself, which is to become one with The Source. If one realizes that he is one with The Creator, he or she will not worry about which is the best meditation posture or which is the best meditation technique. Meditation becomes an enjoyable private moment and nothing will come between You and The Source. All worries, sadness, anger or any other discordant energy will not be part of your reality, replaced by Pure Unconditional Love.

Second secret: choose a meditation technique that involves an initiation using Divine Energy. If you receive an attunement with this Energy through a competent Master, not only your major Chakras are activated, but also your Divine Chakras. With activated, well balanced and fully developed Chakras, one will be able to expand his consciousness to the Universe and beyond. As the result, he or she could enter a deepest state of meditation in just seconds. A regular self-taught or classroom type meditation will also give you some benefit, but result will take quite a while, sometimes years.

Third secret: make Meditation a daily routin! e. Just like anything else, it takes some effort to master meditation. Unlike any other regular technique, a Divine Energy based technique will improve your sensitivity and your psychic ability in no time, faster than any other technique could. If one could feel the flow of energy or even see it with Third Eye Chakra, meditation becomes very amusing. Most people don't even want to open their eyes and stop meditating, because when the energy activate their pineal, the sensation is very pleasant. For this reason, making meditation a daily routine will not be tough at all. After all, You don't need to spend hours, meditation with Energy from The Source will only take 15 minutes of your time daily.

639 Hz Frequency Connecting/Relationships

These original sound frequencies were apparently used in Ancient Gregorian Chants, such as the great hymn to St. John the Baptist, along with others that church authorities say were lost centuries ago. The chants and their special tones were believed to impart tremendous spiritual blessings when sung in harmony during religious masses. These powerful frequencies were rediscovered by Dr. Joseph Puleo as described in the book Healing Codes for the Biological Apocalypse by Dr. Leonard Horowitz. I give honor to both of these gentleman for the part theyve played in helping return these lost frequencies back to humanity. The Six Solfeggio Frequencies include: UT 396 Hz Liberating Guilt and Fear RE 417 Hz Undoing Situations and Facilitating Change MI 528 Hz Transformation and Miracles (DNA Repair) FA 639 Hz Connecting/Relationships SOL 741 Hz Awakening Intuition LA 852 Hz Returning to Spiritual Order For example, the third note, frequency 528, relates to the note MI on the scale and derives from the phrase "MI-ra gestorum" in Latin meaning "miracle." Basic Rules for Practicing Yoga

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 10:00 PM PST

Article by Aman Roy

Yoga is the art of living a sound and healthy life. By enhancing the present status of mind, body and soul and by uniting these three prior elements in a single chord one can lead a perfect righteous life. Different forms of yoga like Hatha yoga, Ashtanga yoga or Kundalini yoga are practiced for ages to help in synchronizing mind, body and soul. Originated in India thousands of years ago, this art and philosophy of yoga implies teaching all people, the steps towards a stress-free life. Regular practicing of various yoga exercises like yoga postures or asanas, breathing exercises or Pranayama, ensure a calm and relaxed state of mind. A healthy mind indicates a healthy body. And yoga when practiced with meditation promises double benefit as meditation wards off all the unwanted thoughts and worries from human mind, thus making it pure like a crystal. Both yoga and meditation yield best result if a little bit of yoga music or meditation music can be incorporated in the practicing.

The main aim of yoga is to achieve the ultimate physical, mental and spiritual well-being of a human being. There are some basic rules which should be kept in mind while practicing yoga. The best time to practice yoga is morning as it makes a person free for the whole day from the tension of taking time out for doing yoga. If doing yoga in morning is not possible for someone then he must choose a p! articula r time and stick to that time everyday. It is advisable to practice yoga on a regular basis because irregularity will not bring the proper result. There is no need to practice yoga twice in a day but at least 15 to 20 minutes in a day should be alloted for doing this at the beginning and then gradually increase it to 1 hour. Try and find a clean, airy, calm and noiseless corner at home, play some soothing yoga music and make the atmosphere perfect for doing the sadhana. A mindful work like doing yoga must be done silently. So, talking or conversing with other person at that time is better to avoid. Though there is no restriction on normal food habit but the meal-timing is an important factor in yoga practicing. Doing yoga with full stomach is strictly disapproved by the yoga gurus. One can take a light meal an hour before doing yoga. It is always advisable to maintain a proper diet and stay away from any kind of spicy food, fast food, coffee, alcohol or drugs. Try to keep the mind fresh and tension-free at the time of doing yoga otherwise it may hamper the concentration level. Generally during illness one should stop yoga practicing and for women, it should be stopped during their menstruation periods. Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual by David Swenson or Yoga Anatomy by Leslie Kaminoff, Sharon Ellis can help the practitioner by enlightening him with vast knowledge on yoga.

What kind of music can you use for meditation?

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 09:01 PM PST

Article by natishanel

Meditation is a highly rewarding stress relaxation technique. It is also highly empowering. Through meditation, you automatically enter a state of mind that is completely calm, peaceful and relaxed. When the mind relaxes, the body automatically follows. As a result, you reach a state of complete physical and mental harmony.

There are various ways in which you can reach a state of meditation. You can do it through prayer. In fact, it is believed that this was the earliest form of meditation. You can also meditate by doing yoga, Tai Chi or by sitting cross-legged on the ground in an atmosphere that is conducive to meditation. However, one of the easiest ways to achieve this state of mind is through music.

From ancient times, man has been highly sensitive to the effect of music. Music can easily transport you from your physical circumstances to a different world. For example, listening to Rock can make you more alert and active. At the same time, Country Blues may make you pensive and sad. Thus music can directly influence our minds.

The best kind of music which you can use for meditation is the kind that brings you into greater harmony with the vibrations of the universe. The logic is clear. You already know that meditation is possible in an atmosphere that is calm and relaxed. So when you are trying to create a particular kind of atmosphere, the tempo of the music that you choose must be suitable to that kind of atmosphere. Music for meditation must contain tranquil and soothing sounds. It must induce peace and relaxation in you.

The best kind of music for meditation is a matter of personal choice. Whether you like the sound of a waterfall or the harmonious strains of a violin, the appropriate meditation music is available on CDs. The Internet makes it possible for you to buy appropriate meditation music on CDs. Popular music shops may also contain a good selection of meditation music. Some CDs may simply be a compilation of harmonious sounds. Others may contain spoken wo! rds that guide you towards meditation.

Today, the world of meditation music has expanded so much that you can even purchase meditation music CDs that work specifically to release past hurts by combining guided imagery with positive affirmations. Meditation music sometimes forms a part of a complete musical therapy session.

The reason why experts recommend the use of music to induce meditation is clear. When you are new to the process of meditation, it is difficult for you to reach that state of acute inner consciousness. Music can easily guide you to that profound meditative state. It can make you feel one with the universe and guide your soul away from that which is commonplace to that which is transcendental.

Why Meditation? Meditation has been known since the beginning of time and was widely practiced throughout various advanced civilization. Lately, modern doctors in big, reputable hospitals in the United States and Europe often includes Meditation as complement to their modern health treatments.

Meditation is proven to speed up the recovery time in many health problems. During meditation, our body will do a self healing session. When you relax, your brain is resting and for some people they will go into Alpha or even Theta condition. This is a deep meditation state. Meditation is considered as a reset button, where your body function is reset to its normal setting again, after a busy working day.

5 Tips to Help You Meditate

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 07:00 PM PST

Article by Jay Franco

Meditation has been proven to have significant benefits. Regular meditation can help you reduce stress, sleep better, and be more spiritually aware. Some people find it hard to start a regular meditation practice though because most people are running around busily all day long and don't usually take time to sit down and relax. But if you really want to improve your health and manage your stress you need to make it a priority to start meditating regularly. These tips can help you make meditation a regular part of your life:

1. Schedule a time to meditate - If you tell yourself that you will get around to meditating after the kids are in bed or that you'll get up early and meditate before work chances are good that you won't actually do it. You need to schedule a time to meditate the same way that you would schedule a doctor's appointment or other commitment. You are making a commitment to yourself and your health. So set aside a block of time, even if it's just 15 minutes, during the day when you can meditate.

2. Go slowly - When you're used to running around all the time and not used to sitting still and quieting your mind and body it can be difficult to do. So don't force yourself to meditate for long periods of time at the beginning of your meditation practice. Start by just closing you eyes and breathing deeply for a minute or two. Then go to five minutes. Then try 10 minutes. Build up the amount of time that you meditate slowly and let your body get used it.

3. Let go of your conscious thoughts - When you are trying to meditate and you find yourself thinking about all the tasks you have left to do that day or wondering if you remembered to pay the phone bill don't focus on those thoughts. Take a deep breath and just let them go. If you start focusing on those thoughts instead of meditating you will break your concentration.

4. Create a special place to meditate - This can be something as elaborate as an entire room set aside just for meditation or it can be as simp! le as a special shelf in a closet holding a special candle that you sit in front of. No matter how little space you think you have you can carve out a little niche for yourself that will be your special place to relax.

5. Use props to help you meditate - You can't force yourself to sit and relax, but you can use props that will help you relax and mediate. Buy a special scented candle that you burn only during meditation. Light some incense. Buy a plant that you love and keep it in your meditation space. Turn on some music that you find very soothing and relaxing.

Guided Meditation For Optimum Benefits Of Meditation

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 07:00 PM PST

Article by Dr. Rose Windale

A lot of people are familiar with the concept of meditation and its tremendous benefits. A lot of people know a lot, but perhaps not enough as even though there may be books or CD's or magazines to get information from, determining the right technique or approach that will suit you is not that simple. Deciding to do meditation on your own will most likely be disappointing as you may not attain the results that you desire. If you choose this path, there is a possibility that you will eventually be disheartened and frustrated. This article does not mean to antagonize meditation.

It only has to do with the considerable possibility that if you do it on your own, there are less chances for you to be satisfied. Meditation works for anybody. But the thing is, to get the optimum benefits from meditation, you need to have the right teacher, one that will constantly be behind you to ensure that you get the best out of meditation. Guided meditation may well be the best option that you can take. Considering the vast sources of information out there about the basic principles, practices and philosophies of meditation, it may seem that you are standing before a hundred crossroads.

Chances are that you will take the wrong path despite all the information you have acquired. Neither will joining a group prove completely effective. Most likely, you will not entirely grasp the essence of the whole procedure as you are not individually taught. Guided meditation by far is the best choice that you can make. The first thing to do when you decide to go for guided meditation is to find a teacher that would willingly work with you on an individual basis. In this approach that you opt to take, be sure that the teacher wants to modify his/her program to cater to your personal needs and help you go from there.

Consider these guidelines before you decide to take the path of guided meditation: 1. What do you want to achieve from meditation? Be specific about your goals. 2. What is the suitable guided medi! tation c ourse or program for you? 3. Confer with the teachers of guided meditation. Inquire about a program that will cater to your needs. 4. Ask about the duration of the guided meditation course as well as its cost. Consider, too, the guarantees and if there is a refund policy. 5. Find out of the guided meditation course provides continuous and ongoing support and guidance. See to it that your teacher will work with you to ensure that you get the results that you desire and deserve.

It is more than just a set of exercises for you and then to just leave it at that. Furthermore, make sure that guidance and support will go on as part of the guided meditation program for you to progress in the future. Paying for a guided meditation course is paying for a service. And if you are not satisfied, say so and expect to get a refund of your payment. An effective guided meditation teacher should be capable and confident of his/her capacity to give you the benefits that you expect from meditation. It's totally out of the question when somebody says "It's all up to you".

Life Transforming Tale of Path to Enlightenment

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 07:00 PM PST

A life transforming tale of first century Celtic boy and girl and their path to enlightenment by Jill Frew, Ph.D. has been released.

This new book published by Dog Ear Publishing tells the story of a young girl and boy on the Isle of Skye in the 1st century BC, Soillse and Fรฌrinn. Through their lessons with the nearby druid, the young people learn of the Diamond Core or seventh heaven and its consciousness of enlightenment, how to change their outer lives, and step into true love and their highest destinies.

According to the druid, there is an inner spark of the Creator light in the center of each human heart that creates all it shines through, love and fear alike blended into every person's outer life. Unconscious fears from everyone's fall from heaven are creating the outer troubles of their lives. But miraculously, this same creator flame heals all fear brought into it, resulting in release from these outer difficulties. Mired in the violence and overwork of tribal traditions, Fรฌrinn and Soillse learn to face their fears, persist through life's difficulties, and break through into freedom from fear for all time.

The simple meditative healing method and stages of the path of transformation to true love and world service are clearly illustrated in the lives of Soillse and Fรฌrinn. These can be learned and applied by every reader. Structures of light that regulate the impulses of intelligence, emotion, and action, phases of child and life development, the Celtic pantheon, the Ogham alphabet, Celtic tree lore, and the hidden Celtic streams of change and healing are also explained, the result of twenty-five years of intensive meditation and research by the author. This book is a call to the people of Alba to raise the standard of love and renew their ancient spiritual traditions. It is also a call for people of every land to move through the transformation process in order to create their own happily-ever-after and together create heaven on earth.

Alba Reborn: Book One, A Druid Path of Return is a moving story spanning the early years of Soillse and Fรฌrinn's lives, but more than that, it is a primer of teachings from the realms of light of the Otherworld. Author Dr. Jill Frew, a clinical psychologist and energy healer, has lived through the transformation process she teaches. It is her hope that readers will be inspired by Firinn and Soillse to embrace the transformation process and heal their own inner fears. She is also author of Guardians of the Celtic Way (Inner Traditions, 2003). Her hope is to found a spiritual community in the Borders of Scotland based on principles of love. Solfeggio Harmonics - 285 HZ - Quantum Cognition

A meditation with solfeggio frequency 285. Quantum Cognition is the quality of information processing that encompasses and extends beyond material/sensory based data collection modalities, to include more subtle avenues of awareness, where a direct experience of the nature of the perceiver can be felt and understood in its totality. This direct experience is verified by the perceiver, according to his/her own reality strategy, while also transcending the linear syntax of thought patterns familiar to the intellect. This quality of perception, being uninhibited by linearity, unhinges consciousness from the boundary conditions of the ego thought system - which is rooted in time/space - allowing access to the atemporal reality of our eternal self-hood. Irritated? Annoyed? Stressed? Don't Scratch That Itch - Meditate

Meditation
by ario_

Article by Willie Horton

Copyright (c) 2009 Willie Horton

I constantly tell my clients that meditation is like your life in miniature - in other words, everything you encounter during meditation mirrors your daily life.

So, for example, during meditation, your conscious mind will distract you - with an average of 50,000 random thoughts whizzing through it, it's bound to! If you let those random thoughts simply pass on during meditation, you learn how to be more focused during the ordinary day, when you really want to and need to concentrate on the things you have to do - to do them to the best of your ability.

Again, what if you're having a bad session of meditation - as a lot of my clients tell me "I can't get into it the way we did during the two-day workshop"? Well, if you can avoid getting annoyed with yourself during meditation, you will develop your ability to stay balanced and calm when you're having a bad day at work, when things aren't going your way - or where something that might otherwise seem like the end of the world has just happened. Learn not to react to bad stuff during meditation and you will not react to the crap that life throws at us regularly. As a result, you learn how to act.

Then, of course, some of my clients get all excited about getting really deeply into flow during meditation. Fine, I say, but, just like a bad session, the good session passes too! Don't get hooked on it - that's not the purpose of meditation. The purpose of meditation is to discipline your mind - remember the normal mind is unruly, all over the place. The purpose of meditation is to gain control of your mental capacity - not to have a good time. So, just as you learn, through meditation not to react to a good session, so, in your everyday life, you become more balanced, not spaced out with joy when something good happens - because just like the crap in life, the good stuff arises and passes away as well.

In meditation, all manner of things can want us to join in in their little drama. Noise can! be a ma jor distraction - but only if you let it, because listening to and hearing noise during meditation can be one of the most effective ways of gaining control of your mind. Again, your body will start acting up - during a workshop a few weeks back I asked the group to start their meditation in a sitting position that they wouldn't have to change during the exercise. The mere suggestion that I wanted them to stay completely still resulted in all kinds of shuffling and bodily rearranging - we all thought one of the guys had started dancing, he was moving so much. After we discussed the insanity of allowing your mind play tricks on you like that, the second session was perfectly still - everyone got the message, everyone understood that you choose whether to be distracted or not - exercise the choice during meditation - it gets really to exercise the choice between mindless reaction and real action during our everyday lives.

I also mentioned to the group that, being adults, they could choose whether or not to focus all of their attention on a particular area of their body - one area at a time. I mentioned to them that, during one of my recent one-to-one sessions, I had told my client, Peter, that if, as I had asked him, he focused all of his attention on the top of his head, he would not have scratched his nose! Understand? He should not have even noticed that there was an itch, if all of his attention was where he had decided to focus it. If you learn not to scratch the itch during meditation, something really interesting happens - the itch passes away! Like every minor irritation in our ordinary lives, the itch simply arises and passes away. But, boy do we let minor irritations become major ones.

Just after the group session that I mentioned a moment ago, one of the guys, Paul, got a 'phone call from his wife. She explained that their because their daughter was not well enough to go sailing with her school that afternoon, the school's principal had banned the child from going on a theatre trip th! at eveni ng. The kind of injustice that sends parents into spasm! She asked Paul to get onto the school and sort the teacher out - and, believe you me, Paul is the kind of guy that not only would have no problem doing that, he'd positively relish it.

But, Paul decided not to get involved in the school principal's little drama - as he said to his wife, the teacher would find some other way of getting at their daughter - sooner or later. To quote Paul directly, he said "I'm not going to scratch that itch!" You and I know plenty of people who are, literally, only itching for you to get involved in their dramas! Don't we? One of my clients calls them energy vampires - they suck you in and bleed you dry. But, if you learn not to scratch the itch in meditation, you learn not to react to that nonsense in everyday life - let them pass - just like the itch, they'll go away if you don't give them any energy.

Your energy - your mental and spiritual energy - is yours. Yours to master, yours to focus and direct, yours to give freely in taking appropriate action in everyday life - yours to deny to those who would wish you to react - yours to conserve and refocus when outside events distract you.

Learn, through meditation, how to harness and focus your energy - and that ability will become an integral part of your everyday life, changing you from a reactive normal 'not all there' person, who can only muster up 1% of their energy, into a cool, calm, focused person with presence. What you learn in meditation and apply in daily life, will change your daily life - dramatically.

Meditation Is Not Just for Hippies

Posted: 02 Jan 2012 03:00 PM PST

Article by Alex E. Campain

Meditation Is Not Just for HippiesWhen most people hear talk of meditation, they envision pot-smoking hippies with long dreadlocks, chanting Buddhists with saffron robes, or soul-searching New Agers with muddle-headed notions about reality.

Anyone who wishes to promote the therapeutic and scientific benefits of regular meditation sessions faces an uphill battle against a pervasive view of meditation that has pretty much been cemented with caricatures involving effeminate men and ditzy women. In this short article, we will examine what Western medicine has to say aboutmeditation, and we will offer a few simple, practical guidelines on how best to begin the practice of meditation. Do not fear -- you will not need to go under the wing of some guru with a funny accent, nor will you need to invest in incense or expensive mats. Meditation is something the modern man or woman can do for personally verifiable benefits, including a significant reduction in the amount of stress experienced in a world that is daily becoming more complex andconfusing.

Meditation is no stranger to Western medicine. In any modern hospital, meditative practices are encouraged in patients to reduce the effects of stress, such as a weakened immune system. The medical community has reached almost unanimous agreement on the idea that psychological stress has direct and measurable negative effects on the physical body. It has been observed that meditation may in fact be a natural sedative or anesthetic on par with milder drugs (though it would be most unwise to try to meditate your way through trauma surgery!). Meditation has been shown to have favorable effects on heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, metabolism, brain-wave state, and many other physiological processes.

Medical studies of meditation go back decades. Dr. Herbert Benson, of no less a prestigious medical center than Harvard Medical School, paved the way in the '70s with his acclaimed book The Relaxation Response, a landmark study on the power of med! itation to combat and counteract the effects of stress. Anyone who is skeptical of the physiological benefits of regular meditation would do wellto pick up a copy of his book (and even some of his later books) foran eye-opening reading experience.

Also in the '70s, the Australian psychiatrist Ainslie Meares published an article in the Medical Journal of Australia about the regression of cancer following a program of prolonged meditation. Add his best-selling book Relief Without Drugs to your reading list.

In more recent times, the neurophysiologist Dr. James Austin published his book Zen and the Brain, which illustrated how Zen meditation has observable effects on the circuitry of the brain. Medical imaging technology has confirmed this.

These findings are not the work of pseudo-academics or quacks on the fringe of modern medicine. If you still need convincing, consider the 2006 article from Harvard Medical School, which reported how meditation increases gray matter and slows down the aging of the brain.

So how do you take the first steps on the road to seeing what meditation has to offer? It is important first to disabuse yourself of the many, often contradictory, spiritual and metaphysical notions surrounding the practice of meditation.

You do not need to convert to a new religion to enjoy thestress-reducing benefits of regular meditation sessions.

Simply find yourself a quiet place where you can remain undisturbed for thirty or so minutes a day. You may choose either to sit upright in a comfortable chair or to lie down on a cozy couch. Begin by closing your eyes and taking a few deep breaths. This will aid in quietening surface mental chatter. Then work from your toes to your scalp, imagining each part of your body releasing itsstress and tension. This whole process should take around five minutes. If you feel a numbing or heavy sensation as you drift into a higher state of relaxation, do not worry -- this is normal. Next you have to concentrate on one specific thing to th! e exclus ion of all else. Favorite choices include your breathing, your navel, a mental word (known as a mantra), or a visualized object.

You may even wish to concentrate on nothing in particular and merelylet your mind empty itself of its own accord. The last thing to note is that it is important not to fight intruding thoughts -- simply release them calmly.

As time goes by, reaching a state of mental tranquility will become easier andeasier. You will be a different person.

Meditation is a universally-accepted process of cleansing, healing and restoring the mind, body and the spirit practiced not just in today's modern world, but in ancient cultures. Yogis, or people trained with the ancient art of meditating, proclaim meditation as the highest state of mind, where clarity and self-awareness is achieved, producing a kind of mystical peace and tranquility.

Meditation and yoga, which is a highly structured mental and physical meditation, are propagated by many schools of thoughts. As such, there are various meditation and yoga principles from the Eastern to the Western cultures and from spiritually-evolved cultures like Oriental, Indian, Tibetan and Grecian. Though they have different names for the types of meditation and yoga they are propagating, these techniques often possess similar objectives and steps.

Here are a few different and important types of yoga and meditation which was practiced in the ancient world but still survives and given some modern twists today.Prayer Meditation is considered one of the oldest and most effective types of yoga or meditation, not to mention the most basic process of connecting within one's inner self as well as the surrounding, and the relationship between the two. This is not surprising since all religions in the world have embraced some form of meditation as a major process in the understanding and attaining of their spiritual goals. Whether it is a simple prayer, a chant or a mantra, prayer is the simplest, easiest and most accessible yoga and meditation one can perform at any time.

One of the most popular types of meditation and yoga is Mindfulness Meditation. It is a meditation technique where one focuses on the field or background and embrace all the perception around that field. In mindfulness meditation, the person is trained to have an open focus of all the inter-related senses coming from the immediate environment while concentrating on a unifying object or a foundation from which to channel all t! he other senses that is being absorbed or experienced.

In contrast to mindfulness meditation is Concentration Meditation, where one channels all the energy and focus on one specific object or subject, blocking all distractions around. In concentration meditation, the person holds attention on a single specific focus of thought, which could be a prayer bead, or a thought-based anchor for concentration like a mantra or repetitive prayer.

While concentration meditation trains the mind to withdraw all attachment beyond the self to develop full self-awareness, mindfulness meditation encourages the mind to recognize elements beyond the self to be able to know the whole self as a constitution of all the other elements.
