Both Ayurveda and Yoga go hand in hand and put more focus on prevention of diseases and thus, preserve the health of an individual. When it comes to Ayurveda, it can be defined as, 'the science that teaches about life'. It lays a great stress on the prevention of diseases and offers numerous measures for the prevention of diseases. When it comes to Yoga, it is simply the union of the individual spirit with the almighty. And, the ultimate aim of Yoga is self-realization, also known as Samadhi.

In today's fast-paced life style, where everyone is busy, Ayurveda and Yoga come as a smart way of remaining healthy and peaceful throughout the day. Now if one goes by the words of Patanjali, the father of Indian Yoga, Yoga is simply the ability to control the modifications of the mind with one's will power. In simple words, it is the reunion of the self with the divine power. It can be termed as a mental state of mind where you cut yourself from the rest of the world and find the inner peace and comfort. Learning Meditation – Why You Need a Guru

Article by Dr. Robert Puff

Recent scientific research has underscored the fact that people who practice meditation enjoy greater professional success and are also able to cope better with the challenges in their personal lives. Practicing meditation helps people to cultivate better mental focus and gain a sense of control.

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, then you'll likely benefit by practicing meditation:

* Do you often over-react to stressful situations?

* Are you apprehensive of change?

* Are you prone to impromptu emotional outbursts?

* Do you feel a lack of direction?

* Do you suffer from lack of sleep due to an overactive mind?

Meditation facilitates greater emotional self-control, which helps you to develop a sense of perspective when confronted with a crisis, making the problem seem more manageable. Taking the time to meditate daily can bring back a sense of "I can handle this," which can make all the difference. Additionally, meditation promotes aroused senses, letting you enjoy the small things in life, such as the color of the morning sky. It helps you to become more observant, enabling you to respond appropriately to situations rather than to overreact.

Meditation helps you to focus more easily. It brings deep-rooted negative and counter-productive thoughts to the surface and quells them, resulting in a greater peace of mind. When meditation is practiced regularly, its mental benefits take root and become permanent. You learn to keep your emotions in check. The sense of control that meditation begets contributes to your ability to deal with the pressures of daily life appropriately and effectively.

Meditation helps professionals juggle their work and personal lives efficiently, enabling them to give their best efforts to both. Recent scientific research has underscored the fact that people who practice meditation enjoy greater professional success and are also able to cope better with the challenges in their personal lives. Meditation helps cl! ean up m ental junk, producing a feeling of rejuvenation. It endows its practitioners with clarity of thought and with control over inner desires.

However, meditation is not a journey you should embark upon on your own. You need a guru to guide you through the various meditation techniques. A guru teaches you the nuances of meditation, helps you to understand the different meditation techniques used across the world, and assists you to find what works best for you. When practicing under the tutelage of a guru meditation becomes easy to learn.

A guru helps you to learn about all of the different aspects of meditation. He teaches you to navigate through the thought zone, successfully pausing all of the mind's activities. Practitioners slowly move from body consciousness to mind consciousness, from an active thinking zone to a thought-free zone, eventually reaching a meditative state that transcends the body and mind.

A knowledgeable guru will introduce you to a slew of meditation techniques such as breathing exercises, guided meditation, and more. Working with a meditation guru, participants will learn specialized uses of meditation that are tailored to professionals who split their time between work and home. These techniques help professionals to deal with the negative effects of stress, counteract the constant intrusion of technology, and to keep cool in adverse circumstances. They help one to develop mental stamina and the ability to sustain oneself. You will learn to perform mini-meditation exercises while in the shower, at the gym, or during a coffee break, helping you to release the toxicity within, and to be the master of your mind and spirit.

Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe, with which meditation should I go?

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST

Article by Michaela Scherr

Whenever I've taught meditation there'd be those that immediately 'got it', and those who found it a struggle. However, with continued practise and learning how to refocus, those who initially struggled eventually also 'got it'. Not only that, after time they discovered their own unique way of getting into the zone quickly and easily. There are many different styles of meditation, so which one is right for you?You can choose from:1.A writing meditation - using either the dominant or non-dominant hand2.Focussing on an object such as a candle3.Repeating Mantras4.A visually guided meditation5.Through painting or sketching6.Walking - anywhere 7.Through breath work8.Body movement9.Swimming10.Listening to soothing musicTo find one you're going to be happy with try and road test a few first. Maybe you've already tried to meditate and found yourself even more frustrated than before you started. Two comments I've heard in the past regarding meditation that really stand out for me are:1. To meditate you must completely clear your mind and think nothing. Yeah right. Personally this has never worked for me, nor have I observed this to work with newcomers. How can anyone new to this practise think nothing? Words as well as immediate issues arise, and mind chatter just keeps on keeping on. The good news is that you can learn to overcome this; it just takes some practise coupled with patience.2. If you're stressed, meditate.Speaking from experience, if I am pretty stressed out (which incidentally happens rarely) and I try to have a decent meditation session, it rarely works well for me. For a start I'm not adequately prepared eg, not in the present moment and still in problem solving mode. From my observation of others when they're stressed and try to meditate they become further frustrated because they're unable to stay focussed and get into the zone. The secret is to prepare yourself adequately first.Find yourself a technique you know you'll enjoy so practising will be a positive experience. Alternatively find ! yourself a meditation group that has a good teacher. Not only will you learn to meditate, you might also form some great friendships that will last a lifetime. Meditation is a discipline that can be learned through a step by step process, and once adept, you can use it for any number of reasons. Decide if your meditation is for relaxation; connection to spirit or self; to achieve clarity of mind; or to regain some inner strength. My reasons for meditation are numerous. I meditate on purpose to receive answers to questions I might have. Before going into a meditative state I write down exactly what my question is, give it a timeline, and wait. Generally the answer is received during the session or shortly afterwards, depending of course on the timeline I gave. I'll also meditate to access my creative self. After I've jotted down what my intention is I go into a meditative state with pen and paper handy. Generally what happens for me is that I start receiving ideas one after the after which I quickly jot down. I've written an entire workshop through one of these meditation sessions. A great self healing tool, whenever I feel 'flat' I'll use colours, crystals, sound, and essential oils for my meditation sessions. After each session I am lighter, centred, balanced, and more focused. So if you're now ready and keen to get started with some serious (or light hearted) meditation simply follow the 10 basic points listed below to help you on your way:1.Decide where and when you want to meditate. 2.Get yourself ready by putting on soothing music and have your aromatherapy oil burning with your favourite oil blend. Activate the answering machine. Is there anything else you need?3.You might like to have a journal and pen ready for some note taking at the end of your meditation with inspirations and insights that come to you.4.Spend a little while settling into your space until you're happy with your comfort level. Are you too cold or hot or is the temperature just right?5.Slowly begin breathing in and out, using your diaphra! gm muscl es tuning into the rhythm of your breathing and the rise and fall of your chest.6.You may wish to close your eyes at this point and enjoy this peaceful, relaxing moment, closing the door to the outside world for now.7.If closing your eyes is not for you, focus on an object such as a candle (take extra care with any lit flame) or something similar.8.If images or internal chatter starts to become frustrating, avoid suppressing them, instead name them, release them, and move on. If this persists, make a mental note that you will deal with it after your session. Refocus and continue.9.When you're ready to come back, return wide awake and alert, wriggling your toes and touching your nose and have a really, really big stretch. 10.Use your journal to write any insights or inspirations you may have had during your journey, or simply enjoy the present moment with greater clarity and peace.Welcome back! If you haven't tried meditation yet, why not give it a go? Add another 'life skill' to your resource toolkit and enjoy greater health and wellbeing!

Health â€" Stressful Social Situations May Be Physically Harmful in Some & How Yoga Can Help

If immune system reacts with inflammation, repeated stress can lead to chronic disease, study finds

Stress caused by social situations, such as giving a speech or going to a job interview, can affect some people's immune system in ways that harm their health, researchers have found. The study included 124 volunteers who were purposely put into awkward social situations. Those who exhibited greater neural sensitivity to social rejection also had greater increases in inflammatory activity when exposed to social stress."It turns out there are important differences in how people interpret and respond to social situations," lead author George Slavich, a postdoctoral fellow at the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a UCLA news release."For example," he explained, "we sometimes see giving a speech in front of an audience as a welcomed challenge; other times, it's threatening and distressing. In this study, we sought to examine the neural bases for these differences in response and to understand how these differences relate to biological processes that can affect human health and well-being."The findings provide "further evidence of how closely our mind and body are connected. We have known for a long time that social stress can 'get under the skin' to increase risk for disease, but it's been unclear exactly how these effects occur. To our knowledge, this study is the first to identify the neurocognitive pathways that might be involved in inflammatory responses to acute social stress," Slavich said.Increases in inflammatory activity are part of the immune system's natural response to potentially harmful situations, but "frequent or chronic activation of the system may increase the risk for a variety of disorders, including asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease and even depression," Slavich added. The study was released onli! ne Aug. 2 in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.More informationThe American Psychological Association outlines the different types of stressWEDNESDAY, Aug. 18 (HealthDay News)

Many times people don't realize the harmful effects of stress. If stress is chronic it can without a doubt lead to a variety of health and emotional problems. Let's first understand yoga. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning "union". Sanskrit is the ancient language used in India where yoga originated. Yoga or union refers to the union of mind, body, and spirit. Yoga brings together physical and mental disciplines to achieve peacefulness of body and mind, helping you relax and manage stress and anxiety. For many the practice of yoga becomes a lifestyle or way of living through behavior, diet, practice and meditation. However, for some it can be used as a way to simply achieve stress reduction and a level of inner peace. There are two major focuses of yoga practice; poses and breathing. Breathing is a major focus of yoga as breath signifies your vital energy and life. Yoga breathing should be deep, slow, and rhythmical. The increased oxygen flow helps your physical body to function and maintain its health and vibrancy. Poses or postures are typically a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility. The overall benefits of yoga are vast and wide. Typically, the number one benefit reported by someone practicing or even trying yoga is the stress reducing effect it has on their overall system. People report feeling less stressed, more vibrant, refreshed, more mentally focused and generally in a better mood. You owe it to yourself to try. Call your local health & fitness facilities today to find out when you can try this for yourself. Your life and quality of life may depend on it.

Christian Yoga?

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 03:00 AM PST

Article by Alex Smith

There is an interesting article in the September 5th issue of Time magazine. This particular article covers a spectrum of opinions about mixing Christianity with Yoga. Even, if you don't agree with a single opinion, it's a good read, as long as you remain objective.

Over the course of time, I have been lucky enough to teach, or practice, with someone from every known religious denomination; so the statement by a Professor Tiwari at the Hindu University of America, where he states that, "Yoga is Hinduism," is surprising, coming from a scholar. Possibly, this statement was taken out of context, but fundamentalism exists, to a degree, in every form of religion.

If some Christians want to practice Yoga to make a closer connection to God, who are any of us to criticize it? Isn't one of Yoga's purposes, the union of self with a Supreme Being? So what is the big deal?

Truthfully, many fundamentalists are all about division - keeping the masses divided, at war with each other, and preferably, in a "holy war." They fear the unity of mankind, letting go of power, and world peace. They don't want to loosen their grip on their followers, so they squeeze a little more.

So if a Christian group wants to practice "Son Salutations", or "PraiseMoves," give them a break. Yoga is practiced in sectarian atmospheres by a variety of different religions. Nobody has a monopoly on Yoga. Yoga is a complete health maintenance system for mind, body, and spirit.

There is a type of Yoga for everyone, and some people want a little more spiritual flavor than others. Since Yoga has been around for at least 5,000 years, there is a very big variety to choose from.

As for skeptics who "point the finger" at each other - "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone..." It might be best if we all practice a little more mindfulness, and loving kindness, before we decide to criticize things we don't understand.

Yoga is "out of the bag." It is no longer practiced by a particular! group. Therefore, Yoga is a public treasure, and not a genie that we will confine to a bottle. No matter how many people try to patent, or copyright, Yoga, it will be practiced within every corner of the earth.

So, please read the article in Time magazine and enjoy it, but take the time to remain objective. Recognize motives and words for their hidden agenda. Most of all, remain in good relations with your fellow man.

Meditation 101

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Article by Deborah Shipley

None"Still your mind in me, still yourself in me, and without a doubt you shall be united with me, Lord of Love, dwelling in your heart. "-Bhagavad Gita

Meditation is a bit of a buzz word these days. For some it is a requirement and a respite from life's hectic pace. For others it may be misunderstood, overwhelming, too new age, too difficult, or completely feared. Yet, meditation, if practiced with commitment, will inevitably lead to the successful quieting of the mind. It does not stand alone, however, as it needs to be first nourished with concentration and focus. If someone is willing to make meditation a daily practice, the benefits will unfold and create a life lived in clarity and with a purpose aligned with the higher self. The common phrase, "The answers are within," cannot be attained without clearing the mind of all the daily clutter. Meditation leads the way.

If one wants to be successful in meditation, one must understand that it is an ongoing process. It is a discipline, just as physical exercise, that reaps benefits only from concentrated and continual effort. Meditation needs to be cultivated; and a dedicated practice is essential. That being said, just like exercise, some is better than none. A student may start with small increments and gradually increase his/her practice with time.

Meditation may sound like a complex assignment, especially for a beginner. The mind is used to wandering, and focus does not come easily for most. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras share that yoga poses, breathing exercises, and relaxation all contribute to the preparation of a mind space that is open to receive meditation. It is a mind-body experience, and therefore, the body needs to also be strong for the prolonged periods of meditative sitting. There are several sitting postures the body can assume although the classic is seated comfortably on a mat or a pillow with spine erect and legs folded, hands resting on the knees.

The best time of day for meditative practice is in the early! morning upon rising or in the evening just before bed. The unconscious mind is at its strongest at the edge of sleep and when waking up, and therefore, the meditation is more likely to work in harmony with the mind. It is recommended that one meditate for at least ten to twenty minutes one or two times per day, but five minutes is certainly a place to begin.

There are many different types of meditation. Each individual has a unique experience with each one. One example is that of a witness meditation. In a witness meditation, the individual will only observe how the mind/body is reacting in the silence, without judgments. The individual will allow the mind to lead them in the meditation, as they quietly follow. Anytime the mind wanders off, and it will, the individual would recognize the mind wandering and gently bring it back to the moment and the silence. Some other examples are following the breath, repeating a mantra, or gazing at a candle. The important thing is just that the individual sit down to do it, no matter what comes up or how the experience plays out. If one just keeps coming back to practice, results will begin to present themselves.

There are both psychological and physiological benefits of meditation. Some psychological benefits are focusing of the mind, remaining in the present, allowing clutter and worry to fade away, clarifying the purpose of self, and developing a peaceful mind. Physiologically one of the biggest benefits is the calming of the nervous system and release of stress-induced physical symptoms. Rarely is there a reason not to meditate.

My own experience with meditation began back in my early twenties. In my quest for personal peace, I picked up a few books about meditation that offered suggestions for getting started. I attempted many meditations, but my attention neverlasted longer than a minute. I was not prepared at this time to quiet my mind, and my life was in utter chaos. I gave up on the concept then, figuring I just was not capable. I realize now that! I was r eluctant to get quiet, because I was afraid of what I might learn about myself. In the past few years, meditation has become extremely important in my routine, in whatever form I choose; and it is a time that I look forward to and embrace. It's "my time for me, "and it is usually after I meditate that my "answers from within" appear. My meditative journey brings me closer to living my life with clarity and keeps me present in my true authentic self.

Meditation is said to be a universal requirement for everyone. The highest joys can be attained during the meditative process. I often wonder what our world would be like if everyone carved out some sacred time for meditation. If everyone had the courage and personal motivation to get quiet would we still see the prominence of such things as lying, stealing, "road rage", rampant disregard for human emotions and life, self-inflicted suffering and illnesses, wars between nations, terrorism, and the list can go on and on? I see meditation as a vital tool enabling me to experience the life that I was meant to live.

Have you got five minutes?

Does Yoga Help in Breast Enlargement?

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Article by Cody Holpp

Yoga is a combination of mental, physical and spiritual energies. The act in general involves a lot of breathing exercises, body movements, postures and an opportunity to get rejuvenated via a blending of your soul and spiritual wellbeing.

Yoga has many health benefits which accommodate a large spectrum of physical and mental aspects. Some common aspects in which yoga plays an important role are as follows:

- Stress relief- Psychological health, - Blood pressure regulations- Yoga is known for being an anti-aging therapy- In addition, the latest studies have concluded that yoga for breast enlargement is possible to a small extent.

Yoga for Breast Enlargement

Breast enhancement is one of the most popular surgeries, which charge a bomb (cost of the procedure). As compared to these surgical procedures, there are certain other controversial procedures, techniques and exercises.

All in all, one mode of exercise which has shown better results in terms of breast reduction and enhancement as well is yoga. Yoga creates slow results, but along with the results come other bonuses which conventional exercise forms instill.

Yoga is a combination of various asanas (postures), and prominent asanas which affect breast enhancement/reduction processes are as follows:

Vrikshasana (Tree posture)

- Start breathing in & out; raise your arms above the head while join your hands.- Step on your toes; place your weight on your left leg, while you keep on breathing normally.- Use your right hand to lift your left foot and then place the sole on your right thigh (inner side). - Then, you need to stretch your hands as far as possible- Look straight at something in front of you.- Now, breathe out as you connect your hands.- Lastly, you need to step on the floor in a normal position after maintaining this posture for about 2 minutes.

Suryanamaskara

- You need to stand up in a relaxed posture, as you hold your feet apart (with your arms along the sides).- Stretc! h your a rms towards the back of your head.- While you breathe in, steadily bend your waist backwards as you separate your arms.- Now, breathe out as you steadily bend your waist forward, till your fingers touch your toes.

Ardha Matsyendrasana

- This posture requires you to sit on the floor, folding your right leg near the knee. - You need to place the heel on the side of your leg (left) in a position where your ankle reaches your left thigh.- Putting your palms over the floor, you need to twist your waist to the right. Now, putting your left hand on your right foot, you need to turn your head along with the right shoulder towards the right. - To finish, repeat the same steps over the other side

You could also see pictures or videos of these asanas to understand everything about yoga for breast enlargement procedures.

Lastly, one thing to be remembered while practicing yoga (even yoga for breast enlargement) is that incorrect exercises often backfire big time, leading to a condition of deterioration. Hence, it is advised that people who are interested in these exercises should perform under proper supervision, at least in the initial stages.

Yoga and Weight Training

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 11:00 PM PST

Article by Apeppe

Yoga has become part of Western fitness training techniques. However, there are some who have never tried it, relegating it as a hippie trend from the 60's. Those individuals would rather look at their flexed bicep in the mirror at their gym. They look for the feedback loop from that experience which gives them the feeling of "working out". This is definitely the group they want to be in. They consider themselves the hard core fitness enthusiasts and label yoga as something for women in white leotards. Is there any truth to this?

The answer lies in a more general definition of fitness. We need to step back and look at the big picture. Those who participate in any kind of exercise, do so to improve their physical fitness level. There is also the benefit of feeling good, mentally and emotionally. Fitness satisfies the needs of the body, mind and spirit. It is a great feedback loop to make the human being better able to handle the world around them.

Traditional Western fitness methodologies have addressed the need for cardiovascular improvements, benefits from resistance training and stretching. Cardiovascular methods are defined by those activities which increase the heart rate to a specified zone and keep it there for the duration of the activity, a minimum of 20 minutes. These activities include running, walking, cycling, swimming, and hiking as natural activities. When weather or other conditions do not permit outside activity, machines can be utilised such as cross-trainers, treadmills and stationary bikes.

All training that is carried on in Western style fitness programs are based on physical reactions to external stimuli. If your mind is not focussed on the exercise, there is still some benefit to the actions alone. However, all fitness enthusiasts are constantly reminded that they need to be focussed on the activity to obtain the greatest benefit from it. Lifting a weight still has its physical implications if the action is carried out as if one were on auto-pilot.

yo! ga was i nvented to bring the human being to the same goal of achieving fitness through a different approach. The word Yoga means joining in Sanskrit. The science of yoga aims to join the disparate body, mind and spirit into an integrated human being who is better able to interact with the outside world in a more efficient manner. The practice was invented in India, 5000 years ago and was developed into a science by observing the effects of various body and mind states on the overall human being. In yoga, one must be focussed or the effects are simply not there. The mind acts on the physical body and it responds in turn. In order to improve the state of the being, then, both body and mind must be focussed or joined to an integral viewpoint.

In a more general sense, the Eastern science of body-mind interaction further implies that all diseases of the body can be cured through the power of yoga. Yoga is not just about the physical body. Yoga incorporates many mental techniques for gaining command over the physical body. Breathing exercises were developed to gain control over one's own mind. Many different breathing exercises were developed in order to produce different physical results. All of them have warnings attached to them for special populations. In fact physical yogic positions or asanas are also limiting to certain special populations. Each such exercise needs to be taught in more detail to participants, rather than in a haphazard way as a general method for fitness to all populations. The exceptions should be understood so that people do not experience negative effects from the yoga asanas. It is therefore important to have a teacher who is aware of contraindicated populations for all exercises. This information is well known for traditional resistance training, but is not taught to populations studying yoga.

The beauty of yoga is its absolute dependence on nothing but the human being. No external equipment is necessary. However, it is important to focus the body and mind in an integrated way.! Brains Benefit From Yoga - Here's How

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 11:00 PM PST

People who meditate seem to be able 'switch off' areas of the brain associated with daydreaming as well as psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, according to a new brain imaging study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Meditation's ability to help people stay focused on the moment has been associated with increased happiness levels, said Judson A. Brewer, assistant professor of psychiatry and lead author of the study. To find out more, the team conducted functional magnetic resonance imaging scans on both experienced and novice meditators as they practiced three different meditation techniques.

They found that experienced meditators had decreased activity in areas of the brain called the default mode network, which has been implicated in lapses of attention and disorders such as anxiety, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and even the buildup of beta amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease. The decrease in activity in this network, consisting of the medial prefrontal and posterior cingulate cortex, was seen in experienced meditators regardless of the type of meditation they were doing.

The scans also showed that when the default mode network was active, brain regions associated with self-monitoring and cognitive control were co-activated in experienced meditators but not novices. This may indicate that meditators are constantly monitoring and suppressing the emergence of "me" thoughts, or mind-wandering. In pathological forms, these states are associated with diseases such as autism and schizophrenia.

Use Meditation To Relieve Stress

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 10:00 PM PST

Article by Chris Impeterelli

Meditation is a form of alternative medicine that promotes relaxing and mental calmness through the use of controlling or suspending thoughts for a certain period of time. Since meditation involves physical and mental relaxation, it's a great way to relieve stress.

When some people hear about meditation as a way to relieve stress, they laugh and think it's a bunch of baloney. They think that meditation is not a viable solution to eliminating stress. But research has shown that meditation works and is a practical technique for stress management.

The most notable research on meditation's usefulness in relieving stress was done in 1968 by Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard University. He conducted a series of experiments on popular meditation techniques and published his findings in the book "The Relaxation Response." He discovered that meditation has a "real effect on reducing stress and controlling the fight-or-flight response." Dr. Benson wrote that meditation increased the skin's resistance to damage or infections, slowed the heartbeat and breathing rate, and reduced oxygen consumption.

Meditation is all about consciously relaxing your mind and body for a period of time. Meditation means that you need to focus inwardly so that your mind is basically so busy concentrating on breathing and body form that there's no time to think about the events that are causing you stress.

The act of meditation is actually quite simple to do. Meditation does not require you to be a mystic or to be very spiritual. Meditation is something that anyone can do almost anywhere.

When you prepare yourself for meditation, be sure to set aside a certain amount of time where you're guaranteed not to be interrupted. Meditation doesn't require hours of practicing at a time for it to be effective in reducing stress. Practicing meditation is ten- or twenty-minute time slots is definitely good enough.

Effective meditation requires that you're in a comfortable, quiet environment. This means that w! hen you practice meditation, you should make sure that you're wearing comfortable, unrestrictive clothing. The atmosphere temperature (whether you're indoors or outdoors) should also be comfortable for you in order to make your meditation session as stress fighting as possible.

Stress-relieving meditation is all about concentration. Once you're fully comfortable (you can sit or lie down) close your eyes. Focus your attention of your breathing throughout your entire meditation session. Count your breaths. You can even say the numbers out loud to discourage your mind from wandering to other thoughts.

Another way to control wandering thoughts when you're in a meditation session is to use imagery. Imagery is very popular in meditation. All you have to with imagery is focus on something you consider refreshing or pleasant. Music is also a popular way to help mind concentration during meditation. You can do a monologue hum. Or you can use some soothing music that features plenty of nature sounds.

The key to meditation is mind control. When you learn to control your mind, you can control your thoughts, and you'll be able to better control the functions of your muscles. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to learn not to let your mind wander to other thoughts while you're in a meditation session. But once you've mastered meditation, you'll discover you'll be able to do it almost anywhere to relax when you're feeling overwhelmed with stress.

Get Your Work-Life Balance Back With Yoga

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Article by Kim Archer

With stressful working environments and hectic schedules, many people struggle with the negative impact of their busy work lives. Those who have difficulty managing their personal and work lives in balance with each other are increasingly turning to yoga. Yoga gives them peace of mind so that they can achieve a perfect work-life balance.

The mind-body connection is piquing interest in this ancient practice, and research shows that it can indeed reduce blood pressure and stress, improve your work performance, and even make you age more slowly.

Although the focus on yoga may be different depending on the environment, its basic premise is to relax the body while keeping the mind focused and alert. For example, when you do yoga, you focus on body movement, breath, sound or even an object. When your mind wanders, as it inevitably will, you bring your attention back and start again.

The ancient practice of yoga garnered renewed interest in the 1960s, when those interested in consciousness began to follow its practices. However, after this, yoga began to fall out of favor. It may have been because yoga is not quite like other types of exercise. For one, you need patience in order to get its full benefits. It offers steady but slow results. This is in direct contrast to the almost frenetic activity and quick results of aerobics.

Many people rush to work out every day during their lunch hours, force themselves to keep up a brisk pace, and then rush back to work. Of course, it's probably physically beneficial, but it still adds pressure to an already overwhelmed life. Yoga, by contrast, offers a less competitive and stressful way to work out, while supporting and even causing an overall feeling of simply "being."

One of the major reasons yoga is making a comeback is because it can be so healing as an activity. The over-the-top push for fitness generated by the traditional exercise regimes of aerobics, running, or weight lifting also has caused injuries, including neck pain, b! ack pain , or strained knees. Because we are such a competitive society, these activities have also inspired books, tapes and videos touting this or that as the latest and greatest thing.

Today, even health practitioners are getting in on yoga practice, with chiropractors, neurologists and orthopedic surgeons sometimes referring patients to specific yogis during treatment.

In fact, it's moving to the mainstream increasingly. Mainstream hospitals and businesses are now having yoga techniques taught, while books about these techniques are bestsellers, with discussion groups on the Internet springing up to talk about this "new" innovation as well.

Surprisingly, perhaps, even the Army has gotten in on the act. It has asked the National Academy of Sciences to study New Age techniques such as meditation to see if soldiers' performance can be enhanced in this way.

In addition, yoga has become a pursuit for some runners, weight trainers or aerobic dancers who don't find peace in their exercise regimes and want the de-stressing aspects of yoga to be part of their workouts.

Approximately 60 to 90% of doctors' visits in the U.S. are related to stress. Mind-body approaches offer cost-effective and safe treatments for this ailment that don't involve drugs or surgery. Among people who use these techniques, 34% of patients who are infertile get pregnant within six months, while 70% of those who have trouble sleeping or even have medically defined insomnia become regular sleepers. In addition, the numbers of those suffering from pain and making regular doctor visits because of it go down by 36%.

Yoga - Just What Is It Anyway

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 08:00 PM PST

Article by Chad Lynch

When you think of yoga, what do you think about? For most people it is some waifish person bending into a pretzel position that leaves them with only one thought, "How?" While such yoga poses are part of an experienced practice, it is not the whole of yoga. So what is Yoga?

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word "yuj" which means to unite. Yoga has its origins in ancient India. The ancient yogis sought to achieve perfect health and happiness. To do this they knew that one needs to be in balance in body, mind, and spirit. In order to accomplish this goal one has to "unite" these aspects, which in turn will bring about balance in oneself.

The ancient yogis were essentially scientists. They were exploring ways to remain healthy and happy for the extent of one's entire life. It was beyond "growing old gracefully" as we say today, which apparently means accepting increasing aches and pains. Yogis wanted to take an active role in remaining vibrant, lively and healthy. Their studies developed the yoga practices that we know today.

By working with the body we can align the spine, gain more flexibility, and strengthen and tone our muscles. Internal organs are massaged and toned to be in optimal working order. The nervous and endocrine systems are stimulated and nourished. Circulation is improved. All of this brings about improved health physically, balances our emotions, and enhances mental clarity.

Yoga poses, or asanas, are the most outwardly obvious part of a yoga practice. Though there are plenty of yoga positions that will keep the most experienced yogi still challenged, not all poses require such skill. While some people are just naturally more flexible than others, everyone has to start somewhere and build up their agility. Those advanced poses should not frighten anyone away from looking into starting a yoga practice. There are many beginner poses that are easy for the most rigid and out of shape bodies. Beginner classes will introduce one to these starting positions. That is ! not to s ay that some poses may not be a challenge for you. We must challenge ourselves if we wish to improve.

Breathing is another aspect of yoga. Breath is considered the source of life. It is where your involuntary and voluntary functions meet, as you can control your breathing but it also does fine without you thinking about it. Learning to control your breathing can slowly help you to gain control and awareness of the rest of your body, mind and emotions. It can also help improve your breathing.

Meditation is the next aspect of yoga. Some see meditation as a blanking of the mind. That is not necessarily true. It is more accurately a quieting of the mind. One cannot find inner peace if the mind is running all over the place. Meditation settles the mind and improves your awareness and focus.

In the West, some classes and styles may not explore all these aspects. They may focus only on the physical exercise. This is not bad if that is the only part that interests those students. There is still plenty of benefit to gain from focusing on poses. Though usually the other areas are improved as well even without consciously focusing on them.

Yoga: Helping You Cope with Menopause

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 07:00 PM PST

Article by James Pendergraft

For a woman, her monthly menstrual cycle is a testament to her womanhood. It provides affirmation of her capability to give life and bear children. However, when menopause comes, it indicates not only the cessation of a woman's capability to support life but also an unequivocal sign of aging. To a woman, the menopause is a bittersweet stage when one can look back with satisfaction at a life well loved yet looking forward at the sign that in a few years one will have to tackle aging problems. This can be a tormenting time for any woman, and it can cause emotional torment on her.

However, despite the dreadful imaginings that are attached to menopause, there is hope available that can provide relief from the emotional and physical woes with menopause.

One of these hopes is yoga. This ancient Indian art that is aimed at achieving Holistic physical and emotional balance offers hope that the woman's menopause period need not be that difficult. Thanks to yoga, coping with menopause can be much easier.

Understanding the Benefits of Yoga

1)Yoga is a meditative procedure. Because of this, one will be able to achieve an inner harmony that allows one's mind to be relaxed. In turn, this leads to better blood flow and promotes deep breathing that generally benefits the body.

2)With yoga, one will be able to learn to accept the inevitable things. This is because the art teaches people to become meditative and learn to focus on things other than those that cause strain on one's thinking.

3)By its simple presence, yoga allows people to be preoccupied with something. This allows women going through menopause to have some diversions in their thinking instead of focusing only on menopause.

4)Yoga is commonly done by groups. Because of this, a woman will be able to cultivate friendships with various individuals. This is beneficial in that this system allows a woman to expand her social base. Likewise, this will also enable her to have more friends.Knowing the Requirements! for Yog aYoga can be done alone or with groups. When done alone, a woman must make sure that there will be the least disturbances. A key consideration here is to avoid doing yoga in the living room or in other areas where one is likely to be disturbed. Moreover, it would be better to have it during times when people are less likely to bother each other. At daytime, doing yoga at early afternoon is a great way to avoid distraction. One must select a part of the house where one will have a dose of fresh air. Open the window and relish in the gentle breeze. The soft wind should be relaxing to both mind and body. In order to make yoga more comfortable, one must sit on a praying mat that is comfortable. One must avoid doing yoga in bed or in soft mattresses because movements and shifting of these bases due to application of pressure can distract a person.

6 Great Tips for Teaching Yoga to Children

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 07:00 PM PST

Children and Yoga

Yoga Children

In the following 2 articles, Yoga for Kids | Guidelines and Benefits and Comprehensive Guide to Teaching Children's Yoga, I shared a great deal of information on yoga for children.  Included in those articles are a large collection of kid's yoga poses and details on how to successfully teach a children's yoga class.  Those articles have helped many kid's yoga teachers and some have requested that I provide more information regarding children's yoga as there is not much reliable information regarding this topic on the web.

So today I am going to share with you 6 tips on how to encourage kids to learn and practice yoga.  Although I am a certified kid's yoga teacher, these tips actually come more from my personal experience than from the knowledge I gained in the teacher's training course.  These are techniques I use to actually get my 2 little boys to do yoga and as it has worked with them, I am sure it will go a long way in helping you with your children too.

6 Tips for Teaching Yoga to Children

Yoga for Children: – Tip #1:

Set Time for Yoga

Set aside a definite time for doing yoga.  If you have tried to maintain a regular yoga or meditation practice, you know that consistency is difficult and that the key to ! resolvin g this is to have a set time to do yoga.

As yoga needs to be done when the stomach is empty, it requires a bit of planning, so it is good to have a set time either before eating or a few hours after eating to practice.

Teaching Children Yoga – Tip #2:

Keep Children's Yoga Resources Handy

Children are often inspired by their peers and like to try things they see other kids doing.  So keep a yoga for kids book handy.  Make sure the book has plenty of illustrations and is easily accessible.  My kids love leafing through such books and then trying the poses and exercises they see.

You can also use YouTube or the internet for this.  Find kids yoga videos or show them the yoga illustrations I have on my website.  This is another way to get them motivated.

Yoga for Children – Tip #3:

Yoga Creativity

Let the children unleash their creative side and allow them to create unique poses that they have come up with.  Of course, you will be teaching them the regular kids yoga poses, but allowing them some freedom to come up with their own postures and movements is fun and engaging for them.

To not let such activity disrupt the flow of their yoga session, you might want to save this part for last.

Children's Yoga – Tip #4:

Do Yoga Shows

Children love to put on shows, so use that as a motivating factor by planning for them to do a yoga show for you from time to time.  As my boys are growing up now, they are 5 and 7 respectively, they get excited about the possibility of being featured on daddy's blog if they learn their yoga and do it well.  In the same way, allow them a stage to showcase their skills and it is a fun way to inspire and motivate them.

Teaching Yoga to Children – Tip #5:

Kids Yoga Class

Consider enrolling the children in a kids yoga class.  These are becoming more and more common, and are also part of many private and public school programs now as well.  My son, Shivum, had a weekly yoga class in his school and it was one of his favorite activities there.

Teaching Kids Yoga – Tip #6:

Explain the Benefits of Children's Yoga

How many times have you told your kids to eat this or that because it makes them stronger or will help them grow?  It is natural for kids to want to grow and blossom, so giving them information on all the ways yoga is going to benefit them is only going to make them more eager to take up its practice.

You will find a full list of benefits in the article: Yoga for Kids – Guideline and Benefits.

Teaching Yoga to Children Summary:

Just a reminder that much more information, specially with regard to teaching kid's yoga classes can be found in the guidelines article linked to above.   Here I have given you tips on how to inspire and motivate your children to do yoga.  Yoga is one of the great gifts we have been given, and your children will be forever grateful if you can pass it on to them as well.

PS: I have a new Mastery of Meditation and Yoga Facebook Fan Page.  Please stop by and Like it.  Also, if there are specific topics you want to learn more about, leave a message for me there and I will be glad to write about them on my blog.  I appreciate your love and support.

PPS: As always please feel free to share any tips you have used to teach yoga to children in the comments section below.  I am sure parents and yoga teachers will appreciate your input.

Meditations: The Use Of Sacred Phrases In Your Daily Meditations

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 05:00 PM PST

Article by Chris Le Roy

There are many reasons for meditating, such as meditating for relaxation, stress relief or dealing with an issue. Sometimes you may even meditate for the fun of it because of the high you get coming off a meditation session. However, sometimes you may want to meditate for a purpose or to help reinforce something you want to achieve.

If you are an elite athlete you may meditate each day to help you in your mental preparation by meditating on what you will do to win your race or if you are a basketball player you may meditate on shooting a 3 point shot. You can achieve these outcomes by using phrases during your meditation session.

The objective of these phrases during a meditation session is to help reprogram your mind to achieve your objectives when your mind is in its most malleable state. The mind is most open to suggestion or reprogramming during a meditation session.

The Buddhist Monk uses sacred meditation phrases during a meditation session to help them in overcoming their transgressions and ill thoughts they have during the day. They are provided these sacred phrases from the teachings of Buddha, their teachers and the Dalai Lama. Each Sacred Phrase contains an important lesson that is to be learnt.

A sample sacred phrase by Buddha goes as -

Speak the truth, do not become angered and give when asked, even be it a little. By these three conditions one goes to the presence of the gods.

Another sacred phrase that is useful in daily life -

The wise who control body, speech and mind are indeed the consummately controlled.

The Buddhist religion and community are not the only religion that has sacred phrases that can be used during a meditation session. Some meditators who come from the Christian faith will use sacred phrases from the bible such as the Psalms or the Lords Prayer.

Virtually every religion has sacred phrases you can use through your meditation sessions and most of these phrases are about trying to help you become a better perso! n and to respect your fellow man.

Many people ask me how I incorporate these sacred phrases into my meditation. Well I first begin by identifying the sacred phrase I want to start with. I will read it aloud and once I have decided what I want to get from the meditation session then that is when I will start.

For example, I may want to meditate on how to deal with a person who is causing me grief or always seems to get me angry. I will find a sacred phrase that I can reflect on and use that phrase during my meditation.

I start off by simply beginning my meditation session with simple breathing exercises that help clear my mind and to get me to a state in which I can begin using the sacred meditation phrases. During a 20 minute meditation session, I find that it generally takes about 5 to 8 minutes to get to the point that I am ready for the next stage in the meditation cycle of using the sacred phrase.

Now that I am ready to begin the next stage, I start by reciting the sacred phrase in my mind. During the first recitation I will simply recite the sacred phrase without any reflection. On the second recitation of the sacred phrase I will begin paying close attention to the words in the sacred phrase and the meanings of the words. Over the next few recitations of those phrases I will begin to look at how I apply the meanings of the phrases to my everyday life.

I continue this process till I am ready to finish off my meditation. The last stage of my meditation cycle involves making a conscious commitment to improving my life and to take on board the values and meanings of the sacred phrase.

The core objective of using sacred phrases during your meditation sessions is to help you improve, you, as a person and the role that you will play on this earth. If we do not contemplate and reflect on these sacred phrases in this way then the phrases will be nothing more than pretty words and will not serve the purpose they were intended for.

Adopt Naturopathy & Yoga before it’s too late...

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 03:00 PM PST

Article by Inderjeet

Naturopathy focus on maintaining a balance between the human body and the nature. The latent force in the human body and the nature is actually utilized to cure ailments and restoring lost health, vitality and vigour. It thrives to create the positive effect of the five elements of nature on the human body by creating the natural (as made by nature) balance. This is achieved basically by obeying the natural laws and discipline in life so that healing takes place from within. Naturopathy thus uses the inherent latent power inside our body to heal drugless, by aligning the human body to the natural super system, thus creating a positive balance and aligning the vigour in the desired direction.Naturopathy can cure the following diseases :Constipation, Migraine and headaches,Depression, Dyspepsia,Piles, Myopia, Impotency (Due to depression), Bronchial Asthma,Amoebiasis,Insomnia, Ulcers, Gastritis,Sinusitis,Dysentery,Hyper-acidity, Colitis,Arthritis,Spondylitices- Cervical, Chronic Bronchitis, Diabetes and Heart Disease (Functional),Allergic Rhinitis,General debility, Eosinophilia, Hypertension, Leucorrhoea,Obesity and Menstrual Disorders. Naturopathy is an Alternative therapy and is very helpful in almost all kinds of life style related and diseases.Several systems of treatment like Allopathy, Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Unani and Naturopathy etc. are prevalent in our country and almost all of these are having wide acceptance by public. However, it remains a fact that each system has its own advantages or limitations. No system can claim to be complete in all respects. Therefore the rational approach would be to have an integrated approach in respect of treatment and different system should become complementary to each other in the best interest of suffering masses.Naturopathy an Alternative therapy believes in unity of cause of diseases and unity of their treatment. It's approach is holistic. It treats the body as a complete unit.So far Naturopathy is concerned, it has it's three aspects. First is prev! entive, the second one is curative and the third one is health promotive aspect. When a patient undergoes Naturopathy treatment and peculiarity of approach lies in the fact that, In other systems the patient need not understand the technicalities involved in treatment but in Naturopathy treatment, the patients are required to have a good understanding of the laws governing health and disease. They are grounded well in respect of laws of Nature and are advised to follow them strictly for restoration of health. Health can only be restored or preserved or promoted or prevented from diseases by living in harmony with Nature. In Naturopathy no drugs or medicines are used. It is believed that diseases are outcome of accumulation of foreign matter in the body and health can be restored by eliminating them. Drugs are considered as add to the already accumulated toxins in body and therefore to be discouraged and eliminated. The manifestations of symptoms are indicative of reaction of the body and the only thing that is required to be done is to keep them through drugs and other means. As per Indian beliefs our body is made up of five great elements Earth, Water, Sun, Air and Ether. The imbalances among these five elements are responsible for diseases and the treatment of various diseases with the help of these five element is called Nature Cure. There is a common saying in Naturopathy that all the diseases but not all the patients are curable by Naturopathy. It depends upon vitality of the patients. If sufficient vitality is there in patients, he can be treated successfully irrespective of the type of disease he is suffering from. It is because cure is effected by vitality working within i.e. Nature. However at Naturopathy centers patients generally come for treatment of G.I.T. disorders, Asthma, Cardiac diseases, Obesity, Diabetes, Insomnia, Hypertension, Mental tension, Anxiety, Cold and Cough, Skin diseases and Occupational disorders as a last resort and surprisingly they get improved. In Naturopathy the methods employed ! in treat ment are quite easy and can even be practiced at home. Best Time for Meditation

Posted: 19 Dec 2011 11:03 AM PST

Article by R.Pettinger

To make progess in meditation it is important to meditate at least once a day. If you are inspired then it is good to meditate 3 times a day. Regularity is very important for increasing your meditation capacity. Some people may say it is very hard to find time in a busy day to meditate. However if you really value something then you will find time. 3 times a day we find time to feed the body. We should also feel the necessity of feeding our soul, our inner being. If we value meditation then we will not want to miss our regular period of silence.

The best time to meditate is early in the morning. Early in the morning the earth is restful and more peaceful. Also there are less demands on your time. Therefore the morning consciousness is more conducive to meditation. Sri Chinmoy says:

"If you meditate in the morning, you will find that your meditation will be most fruitful. Before the sun rises, the earth -consciousness is not yet agitated."

In the Indian scriptures it is said the absolutely best time to meditate is between 3am and 4am. This is known as the Brahma Muhurta or hour of God. However in the west if we go to bed at 11 or 12 then this will be too early. If we try to meditate very early we may find our mind is sleepy making real meditation very difficult. However it is beneficial to be able to meditate early in the morning as the peace we feel will remain with us for the rest of the day. If it is possible to meditate facing the rising sun this will also be very beneficial as we will derive energy from the sun.

The next best time to meditate is in the evening. In the evening the atmosphere becomes a little more restful as we forget the troubles of the day. However if we meditate straight after finishing work then we may still have thoughts from the days activities going around in our mind. Before meditating it is good to take a shower and clear our mind of what has been going on during the day.

If you have time to meditate during the day that is good, however it! may be difficult to go deep, so a short meditation may be appropriate. Whatever time you meditate it is important to give the meditation a high priority. It is better to meditate once a day with our full attention and focus, rather than sit down several times a day with thoughts going through our mind.

Whatever time you choose and this may vary depending upon personal circumstances it is important to try and stick to your fixed time. Like regularity, punctuality is also very beneficial for making our meditation more powerful. It is like eating food, at a certain time we become ready for food. At another time we may become ready for meditation. Our inner being will be more receptive.

Meditation

Article by Douglas Hardwick

Do you find yourself overworked, full of worry, or just plain stressed out? Then, it's time to relax. Give your mind a break and your immune system a boost. Learn to meditate.

For many people, meditation is something quite mysterious. After all, meditation is a practice most often associated with ancient spiritual traditions. But, the fact the matter is, meditation is simply a way of relaxing your mind and your body which, in turn, helps to separate you from your everyday problems and worries. It is a process that can be learned and practiced by even the busiest person in today's modern world.

There are many forms of meditation. However, experts often say that the various forms of meditation fall into two broad categories: concentrative meditation and mindfulness meditation.

In concentrative meditation, the person sits quietly and focuses attention on a physical object, a particular sound, an image, or on the most fundamental bodily process, breathing. Most people have heard of using a mantra to meditate. Here the person repeats a special word over and over. Repetition of the word provides the focus needed for meditation. No matter what the person uses, the purpose of the object of meditation is to give the mind an anchor to the here and now. As the mind becomes absorbed in its focus on the object of meditation, external distractions are reduced. The jumble of thoughts and anxiety so common to daily life disappear.

In mindfulness meditation, there is no specific object of meditation. Instead, the person sits quietly and simply witnesses or notices whatever happens to present itself mentally. It could be a thought, a mental image, a sound, or a bodily sensation. The goal of the person meditating is to observe whatever passes through the mind and let it go without reacting to it or elaborating on it. By practicing a kind of detached awareness of immediate experience, the person is encouraging the development of a calmer, clearer state of mind.

Learning to meditate ! is not a complex matter. However, as with any skill of value, learning to meditate does take some effort. Fortunately, there are many books and e-books on the market that can provide the beginner with simple "how to" instructions and helpful meditation exercises. Meditation also requires practice. But, the practice can be as little as ten minutes a day.

One key to successful meditation is consistency of effort. The person needs to find a time in the day to meditate regularly. The payoff for doing so may be enormous, both physically and psychologically. Modern research has shown that the regular use of meditation enhances immunity, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, reduces cholesterol, and speeds recovery. Psychologically, meditation seems to reduce anxiety and depression, while increasing creativity and feelings of happiness and joy. Given its power and simplicity, the practice of meditation should be included in any serious, holistic approach to health and wellness.
