Article by Chun Jia

Meditation is a way of exploring the deepest part of ourselves and seeking comfort in it. The physical and outside world is always full of pressure, chaos, and negative emotions. As a result, most of us find it so tough to be able to relax and cope up. But through the help of meditation, there's a great chance that you can put yourself into pure silence and peace. If you reach this stage, you get the liberty to relax, think deeply, and keep composure. But what are the most effective meditation techniques for you? Read on and you'll learn some of them.

There are actually thousands of meditation techniques out there but here are nine of the most common and popular:

1. Staring at an object - people who have difficulty sleeping use the technique of staring at a certain object in order to effectively sleep. But aside from being a sleeping aid, it is also a very good meditation technique that can help your mind relax through focus and spotlight. By doing so, your mind is stripped off the pressure and clutters of other stuff. It becomes preoccupied with the object you are staring at.

2. Deep breathing - breathing really slow and deep can provide relaxing effects for the body and mind. IF we are always on the move and get a lot of stress, our adrenaline keeps pumping and that makes us breath fast and heavy. If you want to meditate, deep breathing is a very good technique since it lets your mind relax and be placed in its calmest state.

3. Get along with nature - are you feeling stressed and pressured lately? Do you feel like the world has become so congested and cluttered it seems like you can't get out? One way of meditating effectively is by getting along and absorbing nature. You can do this by going outside and find a place that best resembles nature at its best. You can lie in the fields, smell the flowers in the garden, or stay at the beach. These things will make you relax and keep off the usual pressures of everyday life.

4. Find others to meditate with you - somet! imes med itation is difficult when you are alone since you may lack the ability to concentrate. If this happens, the best technique would be to meditate with a group. The effect of group meditation is so great that more and more people these days are doing it instead of being alone. The company of others while meditating is a very comforting concept since you're actually getting an inspiration to do it by seeing others do the same.

5. Mindfulness meditation - this kind of technique in meditation deals with being aware of your senses. What you do is you start the process by breathing slowly and then be able to identify your senses. Erase the tension, pressure, or any outside negative force. The purpose of the mindfulness technique is not to control yourself but to be able to observe your senses to the highest and deepest levels without altering them.

6. Mantra - this meditation technique meanwhile is an old way of putting oneself to the deepest levels of the mind. It is done with the chanting of a certain phrase or word that can result to deep relaxation mode.

7. Walking - most of us don't realize it but walking is actually a form of meditation. People who are tired and fed up with sitting all day long in their offices can find some time meditating by walking outside; preferably a quiet and secluded place where there is no presence or symbols of clutters and congestion. Any environment that can put a soothing calm in your mind will do. The concept is really based on a notion that if a person wanders to a place he's never been, his mind is put exclusively to it.

8. Empty your mind - emptying your mind is a meditation technique that most of us commonly use but we don't really pay much attention to it. Have you ever felt like closing your eyes and letting your mind float to the air without any regard or concern to anything that surrounds you? Emptying your mind with anything that concerns you will put you to a very deep level of meditation.

9. Listening to binaural beats - finally, a ! very eff ective technique in meditation is through music. However, the experience can be more satisfying if you opt for binaural beats. Put your headphones on and you will obtain a very successful journey to the deepest corners of your mind.

About Yoga

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 03:00 AM PST

Article by Jennipher Shaver

Yoga has a reputation for evoking peace, harmony and serenity in people around the world. Ironically, when it comes to defining what yoga is today, peace, harmony and serenity are hard to come by in the fitness and yoga world.

Although relatively new to the Western world, yoga isn't a new form of exercise. The practice of yoga is more than 5,000 years old. However, during the last 10 years, health clubs and yoga studios across the country have been redefining yoga. By removing yoga's traditional Indian philosophy, many health clubs are focusing on the physical aspects of yoga. Other health clubs are making their classes more universal to all beliefs, and some instructors are infusing their yoga classes with spirituality from different religions, such as Christianity.

This move from traditional yoga classes to more inclusive classes opens the yoga world to a broader audience, says Shirley Archer, IDEA mind/body exercise spokesperson.

"I think yoga can reach people at many levels of interest and need," Archer says. "Some people seek yoga practice for the mental benefits, to clear their mind and achieve deeper levels of relaxation. Others practice it to enhance their own mind-body connection. Some simply enjoy the physical conditioning benefits in a more gentle environment."

According to a poll by Yoga Magazine, 10 percent of North Americans practice yoga, making yoga a billion-a-year industry producing not only classes and studios but also a gamut of yoga-related products such as brightly colored sticky mats, designer yoga capris and numerous yoga DVDs and TV shows.

Health clubs are getting in on the trend, too. According to the IDEA Health and Fitness Association's annual Fitness Programs and Equipment Survey, 56 percent of the 225 IDEA members surveyed said they offer yoga at their facilities. In 1996, only 31 percent of the individuals surveyed offered yoga.

Health clubs are slowly overtaking yoga studios in popularity for places to take yoga classes, says Be! th Shaw, president and founder of YogaFit, a yoga certification organization.

"The real growth is occurring in fitness clubs, and a lot of yoga studios are closing," Shaw says. "In a gym, people are really there to get a workout and don't necessarily want to take it to the next level of yoga, spiritually. [Clubs] need to play to our customers and give them what they want."

Because of this, some facilities are focusing purely on the physical benefits of yoga, making yoga classes similar to other group exercise classes with choreographed routines and standard warm-ups and cool-downs, Shaw says. Hybrid classes, which combine yoga with strength training or other exercise modalities, are where the industry is going, she says.

However, not everyone in the yoga community agrees with this focus on the physical and de-emphasis on spirituality. Many yogis are concerned with modern yoga's de-emphasis on the spiritual world and increased attention on the material world.

Turning yoga into a commodity is harmful, says Georg Feuerstein, author of more than 30 books, including "The Yoga Tradition" and "Green Yoga."

"It is also harming people for the simple reason that contemporary [nontraditional] yoga does not challenge them in their over-consuming lifestyle, which is absolutely essential," Feuerstein says. "The great sages of the past attained enlightenment without colored mats and special pants."

Yoga Blend

Despite the criticism of the commercialization and de-spiritualization of yoga, many fitness centers are creating classes and environments that welcome people of all exercise levels, faiths and backgrounds. Although these classes may not be considered traditional by some, they are opening the practice to new markets and members.

The Flatiron Athletic Club (FAC) in Boulder, CO, offers yoga formats such as anusara, flow vinyasa, hatha, iyengar, kripalu, wake-up ashtanga and intro to yoga.

"We offer a full spectrum of yoga styles and intensity levels to accommodate the ! wider sp ectrum of experience in our members, from beginners to members who have practiced yoga for more than 20 years," says Carmen Baehr, yoga instructor and co-director of yoga at FAC. "To serve our members is our first and foremost concern and to do so in an inclusive and uplifting manner, regardless of weight, fitness level or cultural and religious background."

FAC's yoga instructors use all-inclusive language in their teaching to maintain the spirituality and philosophy of yoga, and to make it accessible to all. Instead of saying "God," instructors say, "creative self," "universal nature," "the universe," "peace" and "compassion," Baehr explains.

"As a rule, the language is not limited by religion, but it is the finger pointing to explain something more inclusive than our perceived limited or small self," she says. "If people feel better about themselves, we are doing our job."

Strike a Pose

Many instructors are also blending Eastern yoga traditions with Western beliefs and incorporating their own religious beliefs into yoga.

In 2001, Susan Bordenkircher melded her Christian faith with yoga, creating a Christian yoga class.

"I thought to myself, `Why is it that Christians are afraid of yoga? " she says. "Because we feel that, as Christians, we have to practice it as part of an Eastern philosophy or we shouldn't do it. As I saw it, it didn't have to be practiced that way."

Bordenkircher later met with her pastor at the Jubilee Shores United Methodist Church in Fairhope, AL, who agreed. The church offered free classes and soon had a Christian yoga following.

"People all over the country and world were doing [a form of Christian yoga], but we just didn't know it," she says. "As we began classes, people began to get it."

Six years later, Bordenkircher released a book and a video series that shares her routine of hatha yoga stretches and poses with Christian meditations. She now teaches at the Bounds Family YMCA in Daphne, AL, the Moorer YMCA in Mobile, AL,! and the Jubilee Shores United Methodist Church. As many as 70 people attend one of her classes at the church. Her other classes average between 20 and 30 participants.

Yoga stands on its own from any religion, says Rodney Yee, a well-known yoga instructor who has appeared in more than 30 yoga videos and DVDs and has authored numerous mind/body books.

"Yoga enables religious followers to adhere to religious principles more honestly and authentically," he says. "Yoga is a tool to help you abide by your intention."

Not everyone agrees. In early September, officials at two churches in England banned a group from conducting yoga classes because they said that the practice was "un-Christian," according to London media reports.

Feuerstein says Christian yoga should be called Christian mysticism. However, he likes how Christian yoga practitioners are at least "preserving traditional yoga's spiritual slant." The focus on only the physical part of yoga troubles him, he says.

"I think that people who want to teach only the postures should advertise their teaching as `posture practice rather than `yoga, " Feuerstein says. "In my opinion, all genuine yoga includes an element that could be called spiritual or sacred."

However, defining what is spiritual and what is not is a bit tricky, Yee says.

Breath Meditation: Some of the many ways in which breath meditation may help you enhance your general well being

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Article by Dr. Robert Puff, Ph.D.

Now I'd like to share with you my favorite form of meditation, called "breath meditation." I believe it is one of the most powerful, yet one of the easiest, meditations to learn.

Before we begin, let's talk a bit about the mind. The mind is made up of wave patterns. When we think, it causes wave patterns to occur in the brain. There are four main types of brain waves. The pattern we are normally in when awake and thinking is called "beta wave" or "beta state." When we are dropping off to sleep and the mind begins to quiet, that is "alpha state." When we are asleep or quietly meditating, that is "theta state." The deepest state of sleep or of meditation (where there is no body awareness) is called "delta state."

The goal in meditation is to get you to the theta/delta stage. I have found that the breath meditation technique is one of the most effective ways to get to the deeper levels of meditation and still the mind. Most people who are new to meditation and are trying a variety of ways to meditate will vacillate between the beta and alpha states in their initial practice. These stages of meditation are relaxing and a wonderful experience, but as with all things in life, the more you practice, the better you will get. Eventually you will desire to quiet the mind at the theta/delta levels and will go to the deeper realms of meditation to achieve this stage.

Now let's talk about this effective and helpful way to quiet the mind, called "breath meditation." It can also be the most challenging way, because although it's simplistic, it is not always easy to do. It is easy to learn but sometimes difficult to practice.

In this form of meditation, you simply "follow your breath." Just observe your breathing with no mantra, no prayer word, just simple and quiet noticing of the breath. How it works is that you sit up straight in a quiet, comfortable place with your feet on the floor or legs crossed. As you sit there, watch or take notice of your breath. Breathe in, breathe out, b! reathe i n, and breathe out. You can breathe in through your mouth or your nose, it doesn't' matter. The only thing that matters is paying attention to your breath.

If something distracts you, simply come back to your breathing. When strenuous or uncomfortable thoughts arise (come to the surface), don't try to ignore them or push them away but instead acknowledge them and go back to observing your breathing. Allow your attention to focus on that. Acknowledge any distractions, without being annoyed by them, and simply direct your awareness back to your breath. Eventually, thoughts will diminish, your mind will get quiet, and your brain patterns will begin to be at those deeper levels. You will find a deep peace that you may have never experienced before. Stresses will dissolve, and a sense of well-being will envelop you.

I encourage you to try the breath meditation and to practice it often. I also strongly suggest you meditate twice a day, once first thing in the morning and again just before bed at night. I find these times to be the easiest to make into a habit. We can meditate any time of the day or night, but it's best to make a point of doing it twice daily and to establish a routine of morning and evening meditation. A sense of peace will develop in your life with regular practice. In my experience, breath meditation is one of the most powerful meditations in the universe.

Walking Meditation: Some great tips and strategies for understanding how to perform a walking meditation

Posted: 29 Dec 2011 01:00 AM PST

Article by Dr. Robert Puff, Ph.D.

Most of us think of meditation as sitting in the lotus position with the eyes closed, but there is a form of meditation called "walking meditation" that is wonderful, relaxing, and something you can do anytime, anywhere.

This type of meditation is a way of finding time to meditate even while being active. The technique allows us to experience easing the mind and releasing stress as we slip into a state of "moving meditation." This is a great addition to the practice of sitting meditation. It adds variety to our meditation styles, and is useful when the body just doesn't feel like sitting quietly. I encourage you to try it. Let me explain how it works.

A key component of most styles of meditation is rhythm. This is true of the I-am-peaceful meditation, breath meditation, mantra meditation, and also of walking meditation. The rhythm we create develops a sense of quietude. Meditation gives us a reprieve from restless agitation induced by our constantly chattering minds, inducing a period of rest, rejuvenation, and healing.

Walking meditation has several components. First, it's best to find someplace you can walk undisturbed and undistracted. You will be walking very slowly. If you are walking in the vicinity of other people, you could be distracted by them, worrying about what they are thinking since you are walking at such a slow pace. You never want to be in a place where you are distracted by self-consciousness about what others may say or think as you are meditating.

Once you find the proper place for your walking meditation, begin walking, and begin to correlate your steps with your breathing. As you breathe in, lift your foot . . . as you breathe out, put it down. Then you do the same with the other foot and continue in this pattern, walking along with the rhythm of your breath. Correlate your pace with your breathing, not the other way around. Just breathe naturally, and follow your breath. As you move, you will find that meditative state where your mind become! s calm, even though you are moving. The key is to just focus on your breath and walk in rhythm with it. As with regular meditation, thoughts will come. Don't fight them or be annoyed with them. Simply allow your attention to go back to your breathing. Follow your breath. Focus your attention on that walking and breathing rhythm.

You may be wondering what you should do with your eyes as you do this. Simply look down at your feet. Watch your feet as you move them to correlate with your breath. If you are in a public place where you cannot correlate a slow walk without attracting attention, here is an alternative way to do this meditation: simply correlate two steps with each breath instead of one step, causing you to walk a little faster. Focus the eyes a little in front of you, gazing so you can see where you are going. As you breathe in, take two steps. As you breathe out, take two more.

This modification of the walking meditation technique comes in handy in places like airports and shopping malls where throngs of people surround you. It can instantly blow the stresses away, as you unwind with each breath and each step you take.

Meditation Guide - How To Prepare For Meditation

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 11:00 PM PST

Meditation
by ario_

Article by Nil Jonee

Meditation may appear very simple to some one who is yet to begin with the art but, can be quite challenging when attempted for real. The peace and serenity that we usually see surrounding someone who is in the process of deep meditation, does not come in a day's time. It takes years and years of dedication and practice to reach a certain level wherefrom the real benefits of meditation or, dhyan can be experienced. Meditation for beginners particularly, can be very difficult. Sitting down quietly is an otherwise difficult task, and this is precisely what meditation requires as its very first requisite.

A number of external factors ensure how effective the practice of meditation and its effects will be in the coming days for a learner. While it is true that meditation has got to do everything with the 'inside' of a human being, the external factors should not be neglected as it matters to every bit, as far as meditation for beginners is concerned. We may have come across numerous examples of Yogis who could continue with meditation irrespective of weather conditions (heat, cold, thunderstorms snow etc), but, all this could have been possible hundreds of years ago when people used to actually dedicate themselves to the art and reach levels of expertise that people of the present times can only dream of. Therefore, it is only for the benefit of the present day beginners to ensure the prerequisites before attempting practice of meditation of any sort.

Area Of Practice:

Meditation should be practiced in an area that is quiet and has a sense of tranquility surrounding it. Whether you have chosen yoga for meditation, or, any other form, the area of practice can have a massive effect on how you develop in the art. Cleanliness of the area of practice is a must and should not be compromised with. you can never accomplish true meditation if you have been practicing in a dirty, odorous, pest ridden, clammy, noisy and overall, polluted surrounding. Avoiding severe weather conditions like rai! n, exces sive heat, chill, storms etc is wise. You may be able to sit quietly tolerating these extremes, but 'meditation' per se, will not happen. Whether indoors or, outdoors, ascertaining that the area for practice is right for meditation will go a long way into getting you the true benefit of the practice.

Cessation Of Thoughts:

This is easier said than done. Thoughts are the intangible phenomena that keeps occurring within the human mind voluntarily and involuntarily. Thoughts of either of the sort must be ignored while meditating. Conscious or, constructive thinking should be consciously avoided. On the other hand, the involuntary or, unconscious thinking (that are thoughts that just keep floating into the mind without any conscious effort from the person) should be overlooked. Dwelling on thoughts while sitting in meditative posture is as good as not meditating at all. True meditation happens when all conscious and unconscious thoughts depart from a human mind. One must allow that to happen. This may take years to master, but with proper practice, it is sure to happen at least to a certain extent.

Yoga and Back Pain Part 1

Article by Glen Wood - The Yoga Teacher

Introduction

Lower back pain injuries are associated with lifting, twisting, bending, reaching, pulling and pushing actions. In order to help prevent back pain injuries, people should: Engage in exercises that don't jolt or strain the back, maintain correct posture, lift objects properly. Low back pain injuries create tug-of-wars with opposing and attachments of bone, ligament, tendon, and muscle.

Doctors also report that men complain of exercise and sports-related back pain injuries more often than women and the two genders identify different activities as the source of their discomfort. This is important because with greater strength and flexibility, not only can current episodes of pain be reduced, but it also helps to prevent further bouts of back pain injuries.

Pain

Pain from an injury may be sudden and severe. Pain from the lower back can affect anywhere in the lower limb. Pain usually felt in lower back, and sometimes one sided. Pain in the back may occur in any region from the base of the skull to the hips. Nearly all adults suffer at least one back-pain episode during their lives. In fact, nurses rank second in back-pain injuries among all professions. Our areas of speciality include: - Back pain, Neck pain, headaches, sciatica, migraine, shoulder pain, foot pain, whiplash, sports injuries.

Conditions which have responded successfully under our care are the entire above plus more. Many patients have been able to avoid undergoing surgery or prolonged exposure to medication by attending yoga classes and regular practice.

Although we concentrate on back and neck pain relief, many people suffer both neck and lower back pain. Areas of back strain are common and we offer some suggestions for back pain relief from simple corrections in your daily activities, to posture modification and some devices that are easy to use and can really help.

Local areas of muscle strain are very prevalent among back pain sufferers, and is seen in up to 85% of chronic p! ain pati ents. The intensity of pain can change from day to day and is typically made worse and maintained in a chronic state by poor posture, repetitive motions, stress, lack of sleep and even nutritional imbalances.

Injury

Our body movements usually do not cause problems, but it's not surprising that symptoms develop from everyday wear and tear, overuse, or injury. Severe back injuries may result from car accidents, falls from significant heights, direct blows to the back or the top of the head, a high-energy fall onto the buttocks, or a penetrating injury such as a stab wound.

Knee and Back Pain with the Help of Yoga Part 5

Article by Glen Wood - The Yoga Teacher

Knee And Back Pain with the Help of Yoga Part 5

With gentle exercise the body will start to heal and recover, the more you put in the more you get out. It can be a very fine line where to draw between working too much or working too little. When you are exercising, it is ok to be 'agreeably uncomfortable'. This is where you decide to draw that line.

Be aware that the ego will kick in and tell you to do more and as a result you will feel pain. You will need to control the ego.

Resistance work can also be useful for issues with knee pain and other areas of the body. For instance with knees where key hole surgery is about to take place. This is what happened to me. A couple of months before my operation this is what I did with the help of my osteopath to a quick recovery.

For this you will need a pair of socks tied together with a pebble in each. The pebble will need to be about half a pound in weight.

While sat on a chair, wrap the socks which are tied together over the ankle of the affected knee. Then keeping your back straight on an exhalation begin to start to straighten the leg bringing it to the horizontal plane of the thigh. And breathing in on the way down. Try reversing this when your ready.

Just to start with, do a dozen or so up and down movements, to get the 'feel' of the exercise. Later you can start to refine this by taking the heel away from the body and the toes coming back to you with the knee pulled up 'gently'. Doing this a few times a day will prepare the knee and ligaments for surgery and towards a swift recovery.

Continue to do your yoga practice, it will pay you dividends. You will become stronger, more flexible, calmer with an overall wellness of being on all levels. The physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels will become heightened and you will become more aware of you body. (You also start to see changes in others as you become more 'tuned in'). When you start to work 'within' you can start to work on the 'outside'. Most d! o it the other way round.

Your body is a vehicle getting you from A to B, so it makes sense to 'service' your body regularly to keep it in top shape.

Yoga for Drivers Neck and Shoulder Pain Part 1

Yoga for Drivers Neck and Shoulder Pain Part 1

Chronic neck and shoulder pain are common complaints. But the good news is that with good posture and exercise it's possible to undo the effects of years of slumping and neck tension.

Each and everyday, you are putting stress on your spine, which directly impacts the tension in your neck, shoulders and back. Even simple, everyday tasks like sitting at a desk, driving, and bending over can contribute to wear on these sensitive parts of your body giving back pain.

Your sleep time is supposed to be the time of day when these areas of your body are allowed to relax and regenerate. However, if your neck isn't properly supported while you're sleeping, your body doesn't have a chance to recover from the stress it endured throughout the day. Improper neck support while sleeping can cause increasingly severe neck, back and shoulder pain over the years, to a point where it becomes unbearable.

Neck, back and shoulder pain can actually begin a vicious cycle. You're in pain, so you can't sleep, but you need to sleep (and sleep right), to be able to get rid of the pain. A continuous lack of sleep can even lead to further problems like depression, chronic fatigue, and believe it or not, even weight gain has been linked to a severe lack of proper sleep. Fortunately, scientists and health professionals take the causes of neck, back and shoulder pain seriously, and have consistently worked towards finding methods and remedies that will alleviate the wretched symptoms.

The first step towards eliminating the discomfort of these symptoms is to correct your sleep habits, and the most important part of this step is to get a pillow that properly supports your neck. Try to find one that is made to be tailored to the position you sleep in, as not all pillows are created equal. Memory foam pillows have been increasing in popularity, and rightfully so. There have actually been quite beneficial in relieving neck, back and shoulder pain for a number! of peop le who have been enduring it for years.

Massage, yoga, and proper exercise are also methods that have been found to reduce pain in these regions of the body. By incorporating small change like these into your lifestyle, you should have no problem overcoming your ailments.

Driving Yoga Exercises You Can Do in Your Car

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 07:00 PM PST

Article by len Wood - The Yoga Teacher

If you have a Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, keep your wrists relaxed and allow your elbows to drop slowly while you are driving. Remember at all times to keep a position in which you are most comfortable, drive safely, and give your body some workout by practicing yoga.

How can you reduce tension in your wrists, fingers, shoulders, and neck? Interlace your fingers and stretch your hands in front of you while keeping the arms as straight as possible. Do it only when appropriate. Another exercise that can release tension from different parts of your body is taking your hands outside your car and back when your car is stopped or idling.

The symptoms of driver fatigues include the following: tired eyes, poor concentration, delayed reactions, yawning, boredom, drowsiness, oversteering, and restlessness.

Here are some driving yoga suggestions to prevent fatigue while driving:

1. Perform conscious breathing exercises. According to studies, simple breathing and being fully conscious of it can boost energy and mental alertness. What you can do is sit straight and let the air that you inhale drop into your belly. As you breathe out, begin low and release the air all the way up through the nose. 2. Do some jiggling! Move and shake your hips up into your lower back. Just don't do it after eating a heavy meal.3. Do some spinal twists. This exercise, which should be done only when the car is stopped, will give you more energy. Here's how to do it: With your hips facing forward and your foot placed firmly on the brake, take a deep breath. As you breathe out, reach across your body by grasping the edge of the seat at your right with your left hand. While you're doing it, slowly twist your upper torso to the right side. Your head should follow the twist; do this by looking over your shoulders at the rear seat. At the next stoplight, do the same exercise-this time you twist to the other direction.

Yoga for Drivers Neck and Shoulder Pain Part 4

Yoga for Drivers Neck and Shoulder Pain Part 4

When assessing shoulder pain, take a history and perform an examination with these questions in mind: Is the pain arising from the shoulder, neck or elsewhere. Generally speaking, individuals who are older and have had shoulder pain for a longer period of time can be treated with non operative measures even in the presence of a complete rotator cuff tear. Women seem to have more shoulder problems than men, and the frequency of shoulder pain increases with age.

A forward head can eventually damage neck and upper back structures, as they bend and rub at angles they were not built for.

Chronically holding neck muscles in an overstretched position weakens them. The forward head creates shortened, contracted muscles in front, and a stretched, weakened back. Cervical (neck) discs are pressured posteriorly. This creates a cycle of forward positioning that herniates discs and makes sore aching muscles, and the tightness and habits that keep you tilting forward.

The result is that the average person has upper body/back pain from the poor positioning and at the same time, the chronic poor positioning makes them too tight to stand up straight.Check yourself - you may be surprised to find that you do much of your standing, sitting, activity, and exercise with a forward head.

No wonder you have pain. Look in any fitness magazine and see all the photos of people doing exercise with their neck tilted forward and chin jutting forward. Look at how people (or stand) when they eat. Look at how they carry backpacks and bags - neck tilting forward against the load instead of using muscles to hold the spine in healthy position. Then they do shoulder stands in yoga, which simultaneously overstretches the ligament, pressures discs outward, and creates forces that generate bone spurs. The average person overstretches and unequally stretches their neck and upper body so much, it is no mystery that they hurt - it is a mystery that they don't hu! rt more.

Yoga is based on a deep understanding of man and his position in this world and was the first system evolved in the world to recognise the connection and the interaction between body and mind. It studies in depth the very structure of the human personality, through analysis the psychological complexities and the cause of human pain, sorrow and suffering. It has laid down psychosomatic means through its various psycho-physiological processes for dealing with the body mind complex and tries to harmonize and integrate the human personality at all levels and stages of life.

Meditation Techniques For Time Pressed Executives

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 04:00 PM PST

Article by Erzsebet

Meditation, quite rightly, has an image of relaxation, peace and quiet, and many may interpret this as meaning meditation can only be for those who have time to laze around half the day. For this reason, those people, such as business executives, who live a pressured life with little or no time to spare, may assume that meditation can never have a place in their lives. That is a shame, as meditation techniques can be quite flexible and quite easy to fit in to a busy day.

The benefits of meditation can be so great to somebody under pressure, that even a few minutes occasionally may bring a noticeable benefit. For a busy executive to have reached their position in life, they are likely to be determined and intelligent individuals. This can often mean that, should they perceive a benefit in an activity, then they will continue or extend that activity. It is therefore possible that an executive trying out even a brief period of meditation may soon adopt some meditation technique or other on a regular basis.

What type of meditation techniques may fit in with an executive lifestyle? Important features of meditation are being able to breathe well and consciously, relax and clear the mind, and then focus the mind. An executive with perpetual meetings and a full diary, with pressures to perform and maximise profits, may think such things cannot be fitted into their busy lives.

It is true to say that the most powerful and beneficial meditation sessions are prolonged. However, that does not mean short periods of meditation are a waste of time; far from it. An executive is probably geared up to packing as much into their day as possible and, although it may be difficult to clear a hyperactive mind, they may well learn to pack in short meditation sessions also. In so doing, they may well find that those sessions give them a boost that is far greater and more beneficial than caffeine.

So, what techniques can an executive use during their busy day? Here are a few ideas:

1. If using! public transport to get to and from work, and you are able to sit down, it can be a good time to close your eyes, concentrate on correct breathing, and try to shut out the surrounding sounds. Commuting can be a very stressful experience every day of the week, so a snatched meditation session, even in far from ideal conditions, may minimize those negative effects, or even turn them on their head. In fact, it can be good practice to try to meditate in difficult conditions, as that makes ideal conditions even more beneficial later on.

The secret to these train or bus sessions is not to fall asleep, and to concentrate extra hard on maintaining the focus.

2. Do you go to a gym or health spa? Whether at lunch time or in the evening, this can be a good time to tag on a short meditation session. If you have finished your work out, you need some time to shower and relax your body a bit. Following that with a 10 minute or more period of meditation could work wonders. Most gyms or health spas will have a room you can use for a short spell of peace, so it is worth asking. A vacant massage room would serve the purpose.

3. Control your diary, and schedule in a mid morning and mid afternoon "tea or coffee" break. Only instead of tea and coffee, drink water, sit comfortably, focus on your breathing and then when totally relaxed, have a short session of meditation, focusing on something calming and not related to work. Even 10 minutes can provide a power inducing respite from the day's work, and the chances are you will not lose time, but rather gain time, as you will work more effectively.

Snatched meditation sessions spread through the day may not be the stuff of traditional meditation, but they are certainly better than none at all. Hopefully, the rejuvenated executive will perceive enough benefits to set aside time in the evenings and weekends to learn full meditation, and then be able to return to work at the top of is game every weekday morning.

The best Meditation techniques How To Meditate Anywhere

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 02:00 PM PST

Article by Ronnie Tinnenmen}

When I was at the noisy reunion that I spoke of earlier, I focused on my breath. Even though I was still in a noisy place I could focus on my breath and tune out the noises around me. I found the silence that the noise was created in and stayed there, concentrating on my breath. Even though I could still sense the background noise, I was in a deep place. You can do this too. Wherever you are, you can make it a place to meditate. You don't need everything to be perfect. Just focus on your breath, your prayer word, your mantra. When your mind's distracted by external noises, instead of thoughts, just get back to your breath. If you're in a very quiet place, your mind can be just as loud as if you were in a noisy crowd. Don't fight that noise, but acknowledge it and go to your breath. Concentrate on breathing in, breathing out, slowly and deeply. What you will find is that no matter where you are, no matter what circumstances are occurring in your life, you can still meditate each and every day. Remember you can meditate anywhere, anytime; just be present and at peace. When you are just getting started with meditation, you will find that there are several good places for meditating. Many people find outdoor locations like deserted beaches, or quiet, scenic locations to be great for meditating. The key to finding a good spot is to find a place that is quiet, clean, comfortable and peaceful. There are many different types of meditation, but if you don't want to be confused by lots of different details and schools of thought, just make it a point to practice mindful meditation. You want your meditative practice to be personal and unique only to you. You can create your own oasis, by selecting soft music that you like, and surrounding yourself with essential oils in your favorite blend. You can also learn to meditate in a hot, fragrant bath surrounded by lit candles. While you are meditating, you want to make sure that you are breathing deeply from the bottom of your belly. Gradually as you take in deep brea! ths, you should try to make your mind blank and let your conscious thoughts go where they want. Don't think about them, or worry that they're there or try to figure anything out.Make sure you choose a meditation area that is free of distraction. That might mean that you have to let others in your household know that you have set aside time for meditation, and that you don't want to be disturbed. One thing you can do to make meditation truly special is to schedule your daily meditation time every day like you would an important meeting, or a much anticipated shopping trip.It can be helpful if you learn to meditate during the same time every day. For people who find it hard to clear their mind, meditation music is truly essential. Soft, meditative music really helps to clear the mind and prepare it for meditative concentration. You want anything in your musical and physical environment that will make you think of serenity. You can usually find free music that you can use for meditation all over the Internet available for download.

Meditation Guide on How To Prepare For Meditation

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 12:00 PM PST

Article by Sanki Linkon

Meditation may appear very simple to some one who is yet to begin with the art but, can be quite challenging when attempted for real. The peace and serenity that we usually see surrounding someone who is in the process of deep meditation, does not come in a day's time. It takes years and years of dedication and practice to reach a certain level wherefrom the real benefits of meditation or, dhyan can be experienced. Meditation for beginners particularly, can be very difficult. Sitting down quietly is an otherwise difficult task, and this is precisely what meditation requires as its very first requisite.A number of external factors ensure how effective the practice of meditation and its effects will be in the coming days for a learner. Therefore, it is only for the benefit of the present day beginners to ensure the prerequisites before attempting practice of meditation of any sort.Area Of Practice:Meditation should be practiced in an area that is quiet and has a sense of tranquility surrounding it. Avoiding severe weather conditions like rain, excessive heat, ch! ill, sto rms etc is wise. You may be able to sit quietly tolerating these extremes, but 'meditation' per se, will not happen. Whether indoors or, outdoors, ascertaining that the area for practice is right for meditation will go a long way into getting you the true benefit of the practice.Cessation Of Thoughts:This is easier said than done.

Relieving Back Pain Due to Driving Posture with Yoga Exercises

Posted: 28 Dec 2011 11:03 AM PST

Article by Glen Wood - The Yoga Teacher

What posture can cause neck and back pain while driving? If your arms are raised forward to reach the steering wheel and your tail bone is pinning its weight on the car seat, then you are in for a lot of troubles.

To relieve back pain, you can use exercise balls as your physical therapy tool. A simple exercise such as sitting on an exercise ball and bouncing gently on it for several times everyday is good for your lower back. It is because using an exercise ball allows flow of fluid into the lower spine, and this helps increase flexibility and reduces pain.

A sedentary lifestyle usually worsens lower back pain. So move your body! Use a yoga ball to perform many exercises that will benefit your lower back. Ask recommendations from your doctor or physical therapist on exercises that suit your specific needs.

Before you engage in a certain exercise or sport activity, always consult your doctor to ensure safety, more so if you are already suffering from pain or discomfort. There are many factors that cause back pain, but it is difficult to diagnose them. Despite that, exercises should be done to reduce back pain with great care and caution.

Tight hip muscles lead to a variety of problems, which include lower back pain, knee pain, arthritis in the lower spine joints, and shoulder pain. One way to bring back neutral alignment in the pelvis is to open up the hip flexor and rotator muscles, which reduces tension in the knees, shoulders, and lower back.

Vibrations in the car sear and road shock from potholes and railroad crossings can worsen the wobbling motion of the pelvis, thus causing more stress to the lower back. Aggravating the situation is the weight bearing effect of the tail bone on the seat when the driver is in a slumped driving posture. Practicing yoga makes you more aware of your body. In the long run, yoga can make you more comfortable in your own body, which leads to better posture and higher self-esteem.

Using meditation Technique For Completely different Situations.

Article by Flavell Shubeck

You will find individuals who have excellent sense of focus and concentration. They've the ability to stabilize their mind no matter what type of environment they are into. However, you can find also people that seem to be often disturbed. They can hardly concentrate, thus, affecting their judgment and good quality of function. Meditation is often a beneficial aid for these sorts of people today. Throughout meditation, mental space is designed to be able to attain a particular degree of enlightenment.

The effects of meditation to distinctive persons also differ. These could possibly be affected by elements including the mood, character and individuality. When a person hardly understands himself, his confusion reflects to his actions. That is why contemplation is important so as to achieve an enlightened consciousness.

A quiet space conducive for reflection, a mantra to be recited and absolute concentration are the essentials of meditation. Though sitting meditation is deemed the basic and most efficient type of meditation, there are actually other approaches to modify the procedure. On the whole, you'll be able to only generate other types of meditation once you develop into habituated using the practice. When your thoughts had been set for meditation, it will be uncomplicated for you to remain tuned-up. Plus, you could integrate the spiritual essence and mental awareness with the physical and mental rhythms of life.

As meditation becomes part of one's routine, you can often discover time to stop and make a connection with the approach of meditation. Naturally, you will seek the blissful state which you can experience only when meditating.

So what really should you do when the location you will be into isn't conducive for meditation? You can find ways to establish focus and concentration. You'll be able to capture your thoughts to be within the meditation state once you direct your attention to a spot in the room, or listen attentively to your breathing or focus on a littl! e object . With the help of a relaxing music and tricky colors, you are able to employ meditation and extend such practice even beyond the meditation period.

Active people today which include athletes need to remain focused in their skill or art when staying grounded. Having said that, their physical ability could be much more enhanced if they are in touch with their greater consciousness. A popular female boxer revealed that in her violent and aggressive profession, she never ever fails to meditate and chant. She constructed her own way of escaping the fitness center atmosphere in order to find peace inside. She listens to the sound of the speed bag as she hits it one way. There is a distinct sound for an one-way blow and also the sound varies with the difference inside the impact of glove. Then all she had to complete is close her eyes and meditate on the sound of the speed bag.

Even a basketball player can employ meditation at the free of charge throw line if he is in a position to transcend the noise of the crowd and also the pressure of the play. In this manner, he can manage pressure and anxiety whilst connecting to his meditation method.

Be creative in modifying your personal way of meditation. Break your patterns and make your imagination work.
