Yoga for mothers

Article by Marsha Maung

I am not a Yoga teacher. I've only attended about 3 Yoga classes although my gym offers Yoga classes. So, why am I writing about Yoga when I know nothing about it? I am curious - that's my nature. And through the years, this curiosity has helped me develop a career as a freelance graphic designer and writer. And it is through a very weird type of Yoga (my own type, or whatever I thought was Yoga at that point in time) that helped me swim ashore when I was teetering between drowning in the sea of depression after giving birth to my sons.

Both times, I was hit badly and constantly turned to the bottle for a solution. The bottle never will be a solution and yet, I hoped it would be.

Yoga and the soon-to-be-motherThere's all this hype about Yoga that I didn't fully understand before - what's all this clamor about Yoga for pregnancy?? What's the big deal? You have a big belly, retch half the time, have a sudden liking for pickle and have to wear your husband's clothing....you need Yoga to help you deal with all that?

But of course, I only began the understand the benefits of Yoga as a mother when I started going for the classes, read about them in books, magazines and websites. This amazing method can help mothers regain their physical strength and sends them into a journey of self-discovery and improvement. Instead of helping you deal with others, in Yoga, everything starts from within. Therefore, to solve a problem, you have to go inside.

And inside a mother, it's always a battle zone...and it's tumultuous half the time. Pizza or no pizza? Sex or no sex tonight? What kind of mother will I be? Will I sprain my own child's fingers when I try to put his/her clothes on? With the kind of bizarre thinking (and hormones) going on inside our mind and our body, mothers often have a difficulty finding peace. Your doctor will tell you time and time again that although nutrition is important, finding peace, quiet and calm in yourself and in your life is just important for an expectant ! mother.

Yoga for the regular motherConsidering the fact that Yoga can help bring calm into calamity, it's obviously a good choice for you to try out Yoga if you're thinking of starting an exercise program. Better yet, join a gym...which is what I did. I used to scoff at people who join gyms and judging from the loud dance music, I remember thinking to myself... "Yikes...gym is just a sorry excuse for a disco. Instead of serving peanuts, they serve fruit mixes. Instead of alcohol, they serve bottled water. But everyone's trying to get into a social thing in the gym. It's a social club!"

And as a mother, I don't have the time to join a social club.

But I was wrong. As soon as I gave the 10-day free classes trial, I was hooked. No makeup, no dressup (oh, the younger gym-goers still dress up to the nines and apply mascara for gym) and no pretense. I go to the gym and attend the Yoga class to sweat - to end up looking ugly but feeling damn good!

Mothers can open up their minds and free up their hearts after YogaYoga has this tranquilizing effect on people that can hardly be explained with words. It has to be felt. It's like you're striking those poses, stretching those muscles and bending over backwards...and all this while, your mind is opening up and all impure thoughts are just flying out of it.

Yoga can be like 'taking out the trash'.

And this can be good for the whole family, especially the kids, as well. After a session of uninterrupted Yoga, you'll feel renewed. Even a grumpy, sleeping, tired and beaten-out mother will have more energy to spend time with the kids. Instead of feeling disgruntled and trapped, a mother can use Yoga to actually find an opening, a release that helps relax, not only the body, but the mind as well.

I don't know about you...but I am going for more classes because I have seen the benefits. Yoga can do a whole lot for the ordinary non-married kidless people....imagine what it can do for a mother.

Yoga Pose Copyright Bid Too Big of a Stretch, Regulator Says - Businessweek

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 07:01 AM PST

December 10, 2011, 8:42 AM EST

By Ellen Rosen

(Updates with lawyer's comment in sixth paragraph.)

Dec. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Yoga poses such as head-to-knee stretches and the sequences of the moves are "exercises" rather than "choreography" and can't be copyrighted in the U.S., regulators said.

The U.S. Copyright Office previously permitted yoga poses and their sequences to be registered, even if those exercises were in the public domain, Laura Lee Fischer, acting chief of the office's Performing Arts Division, said in response to an inquiry by an attorney involved in lawsuits the founder of Bikram Yoga filed against three yoga studios.

The office reviewed the legislative history of the copyright law and decided that exercises, including yoga, "do not constitute the subject matter that Congress intended to protect as choreography," Fischer said in an e-mail. "We will not register such exercises (including yoga movements), whether described as exercises or as selection and ordering of movements."

The e-mail is contained in a response filed yesterday to Bikram's Yoga College of India's complaint against New York- based Yoga to the People. Washington lawyer Elliott Alderman, assisting defense attorney Jordan Susman and Harvard Law School professor William Fisher, sought the determination from the Copyright Office.

Evolation Yoga, with studios in cities including Buffalo and Brooklyn, New York, and Yen Yoga, in Traverse City, Michigan, also were sued. All three lawsuits were filed in federal court in Los Angeles.

Validity Presumption

Robert Gilchrest, a lawyer at Silverman Sclar Shin & Byrne PLLC in Los Angeles who represents Bikram Yoga and its founder, Bikram Choudhury, said the e-mail shouldn't affect his case because Choudhury already had registered a copyright for a book containing his yoga sequence.

"There is a presumption that when a copyright is issued, it is valid," Gilchrest said. He said the Copyright Office has issued "hundreds of copyrights for exercise videos, but now they're saying they're looking at it again and they've changed their mind? It is meaningless to this litigation."

The Copyright Office decision won't put an end to the litigation because the suits also claim trademark infringement and violation of the teacher-certification agreements.

Breathing Exercises

Choudhury and his affiliated Bikram Yoga studios teach a strictly regimented type of yoga that lasts for 90 minutes and includes 26 poses, two breathing exercises and a scripted dialogue in a room that is heated to 105 degrees. Yoga to the People founder Greg Gumucio was a former student of Choudhury, as were some of the instructors at Evolation and Yen Yoga.

Choudhury said in his complaint that each studio violated his copyrights and trademarks as well as limitations on how and where his students can teach his method.

Susman and Fisher, who represent Yoga to the People and Gumucio, said yoga sequences and poses can't be copyrighted. The defendants said the hot yoga they offer differs from Bikram yoga. Each studio offers other types of yoga as well.

Gumucio created a website, www.yogatruth.org, and has almost 8,000 signatures of people who agree yoga shouldn't "be privatized."

The case is Bikram's Yoga College of India L.P. v. Yoga to the People, Inc., 11-cv-07998, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles). The other cases filed are Bikram's Yoga College of India L.P. v. Raiz, 11-cv-7377, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles) and Bikram's Yoga College of India L.P. v. Evolation Yoga LLC., 11- cv-05506, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles).

Kundalini Awakening from someone who knew nothing about meditation

I had a Kundalini Awakening experience on December 12, 2010, but before my spiritual awakening I had no clue what kundalini was, I didn't follow any religion, I DID NOT meditate, and I was completely oblivious to the spiritual world. How To Heal With Yoga

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 05:05 AM PST

Article by Eric C

Yoga is a generic term for the various spiritual disciplines in Hinduism and Buddhism. It is practiced throughout South Asia. Its prime aim is to pave the way to higher consciousness through liberation from suffering, ignorance and rebirth. Vedic and Buddhist literature is strewn with stories of yogis who attained miraculous prowess by practicing various kinds of meditations and austerities. Today, yoga is usually practiced under the guidance of a guru or a spiritual guide.

The word 'Yoga' is derived from Sanskrit where it means 'to unite'. Therefore yoga connotes an exercise in mental and moral cultivation that generates excellent health and contributes to longevity in life. The total and intrinsic discipline exercised by a yogi culminates in positive and perennial happiness. It is a science which affects the conscious as well as the subconscious aspect of the mind.

There are some misconceptions about Yoga. Yoga is NOT black magic, sorcery, white magic or mental or physical debauchery. Some consider yoga to be a dangerous practice that should be engaged by those who have renounced the world. Some even think of it as a kind of mental acrobatic that is fit to be practiced only by certain sections in the world.

Yoga is an all-encompassing science that depends on mental discipline. It ensures the purgation of the soul and removal of the ignoble which will bring forth what is most noble in man. Irrespective of caste, creed, sex and religion yoga embraces all of human life. The believer and the non-believer, the sick and the healthy, the literate and the ignorant, the young and the old - everyone can embrace yoga. One can begin practicing yoga at any age and continue doing so throughout life.

For a person practicing yoga, there is an emphasis on restraint from vice through observance of virtue, purity and controlling of uncontrolled desires. The main technique used in yoga is 'asanas' or postures. This along with 'pranayama' or breath control helps to calm the body and draw vi! tal ener gy forces into the body. Detaching the mind from the external mind through the withdrawal of senses is done through 'dhyana' or meditation. A common feature of yoga is intense concentration on a single point, be it a diagram, a part of the body, the breath or even a mantra.

In the modern world, it is almost impossible for man to achieve the mental prowess of the ancient yogis. Therefore, yoga cannot be seen as an alternative to medicine. But when teamed with Western healing practices, yoga is amazingly effective. Yoga is very effective in helping patients overcome pain, and the anxiety or depression associated with pain.

Yoga is not just a medical science; it's a complete way of life. It lays down strict dietary recommendations and lifestyle practices that helps one achieve and maintain good health. Yoga has been adopted by people for the treatment of various conditions like constipation, back pain, indigestion, diabetes and blood pressure. Exercises prescribed by yoga are excellent if you want to lose weight and gain control over your body. One of the greatest benefits of practicing yoga is that it makes you aware of the various muscles in your body and teaches you how to control any PARTICULAR set of muscles.

Thus Yoga as a way of life and as a holistic therapeutic science has gained a lot of acceptance in the world today. Even though a person practicing yoga may never reach the heights of a yogi, they can learn to live a richer and happier life by practicing these techniques.

Starting a Yoga Practice

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 04:17 AM PST

Article by Jennifer Courtney

Namaste and welcome to the practice of yoga!

Yoga is the union of the mind, body and spirit expressed in motion, sound, meditation and community. This ancient practice of asanas (poses), meditation and gentle ritual will enrich your life and deepen your knowledge of your Self, while opening your spirit toward the world around you.

We recommend that you attend several live classes before you begin developing a home practice. Yoga studios will have all the equipment you require so you can try it out before investing in a yoga mat, blocks, bolsters and straps. Live classes offer the opportunity to learn proper breathing technique, which is crucial in the practice of yoga; live classes also give you the opportunity to develop proper posture and alignment, as the instructor will move about the class adjusting yogis/yoginis. Many studios offer a one-week/one month trial at a discounted rate, taking advantage of these is a great way to introduce yourself to yoga. We also recommend attending at least two live classes per month in addition to your home practice. Again, live instruction is ideal for learning proper alignment and also provides an opportunity to meet people in your local yoga community.

Once you decide to develop your home practice you will need the following:

Yoga Mat - sticky yoga mats are best, you can also use a pilates mat if you prefer a thicker surface to stand on; some prefer to do yoga on a cotton blanket, it is entirely up to you. The important thing is that your feet do not slip all over your yoga surface.

Yoga Blocks - these foam blocks are used to modify poses, essentially bringing the floor closer to your hands to enable you to maintain proper alignment, which is much more important than how far you stretch. You may also sit on the edge of a block to properly align your pelvis during seated poses. Blocks are recommended for beginners, but intermediate and advanced practitioners also find them useful for very challenging poses and days when you aren! 't quite as flexible. We recommend that you start with two blocks. You can also use a stack of books about 3 inches high in lieu of blocks.

Yoga Strap - this is a thick cotton strap, similar to a Judo belt and is used to assist the yogi in challenging postures; most often used for hip opening poses and seated forward bends. Straps are also used for bound poses. The strap is held in the hands and usually wrapped around the foot, essentially acting as an arm extension. You can purchase straps at many yoga studios, online; or you can use a belt or a scarf.

Yoga Bolster - bolsters are cylindrical cushions about two feet long, usually filled with cotton. Bolsters are used for forward bending poses, for many restorative yoga poses, and as modification for certain relaxation poses (e.g., tucked under the knees during savasana). You can purchase yoga bolsters online, many yoga studios will have bolsters available, and may be able to order them for you if there are no yoga supply retailers in your area. If you do not have a bolster, you may also use a stack of blankets.

Meditation Cushion - a zafu or meditation cushion is not necessary but it is a nice item to have, sitting on the edge of the zafu is ideal for proper pelvic alignment and ease of posture when meditating. If you do not have a zafu, a firm cushion or pillow will work as well.

It is always best to purchase good quality yoga props and supplies, but you can improvise with household items while you are developing your home practice.

Unlike other forms of exercise, yoga is an entire system of self-care that addresses the mind, body and spirit. There is no competition in yoga, especially with yourself; it is important to be aware that this is YOUR practice and YOUR time, you need only be present in the moment and the motion, surrender to the passage of time in this sacred space; accept yourself, breathe in love and joy. Be aware of the breath, if you cannot breathe deeply and smoothly, ease your position in the pose - remember that t! here is no competition in this space, surrender to your body and breath. When you are preparing to move into a pose, be aware of your body, take the shape of the pose, delight in the forms your body takes, and luxuriate in the feeling of natural movement. Modify the poses as you need to in order to maintain proper alignment and easy breath. Resist the urge to push further than the body wants to go, your body will move you deeper into the practice when it is ready. If you feel tired during your practice, sit back into child's pose and rest - do not rush, there is time. There is no pain in yoga. Breathe.

How the cost of smoking cigarettes led me to meditation

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 03:06 AM PST

Article by Terry Silver

Cigarettes had gotten too expensive and I'd like to share with you how meditation made me quit.

I was a 3 pack a day smoker but the recession has made many of my luxuries cost prohibited.

For example my retirement party that I expected at age 59, 4 years from now, is postponed indefinitely because my 401k has dropped to a 101k, meaning it's a 3rd of what it is used to be.

My 8 rental homes that I planned to sell off each year to suppliment my retirement are now worth less than what I owe on them, thanks to the Mortgage meltdown.

But the worst kicker of all is my favorite cigarettes have become too expensive for even me to justify.

I have been smoking ever since I was a young adult. No matter what happens, my Kools and I could handle it together. I loved smoking and never had any problems.

I mean an occational cough here and there, but that's to be expected. I am a door-to-door salesman and my cigs have never affected my ability to climb stairs or knock doors, so the bad rap they have concerning the health issues don't really apply to me.

But, when it comes to the money that I am shelling out for these cigarettes and with my retirement and my rental homes dropping value, I need to pinch some pennies and cut out all extravaganzas.

This is where I realized how much money I was spending on my smoking habit.

Smoking cost more than food, or gasoline for my truck. My bowling league memberships are cheaper per month than my cigarettes. In fact smoking is beginning to rank up ther with my mortgages and my utility bills.

Smoking has gotten to be an expensive habit. So I needed to Quit.

But How? Quiting Its easier said than done.

First, I tried cold turkey, but it didn't work because I couldn't start my day without a smoke. Every morning I needed a cigarette just to start off my day.

Next I tried Nicotine Replacement Therapy with the patches stuck to my chest. In addition to their itching the hell out of me I would still smoke ! even whi le wearing the patches.

I was even going to try Hypnosis until I found out how expensive it cost and my health plan wouldn't cover it.

But then I remember a friend that chain-smoked constantly and quit sewveral years ago without any problems.I contacted him and he recommended meditation.

To Tell the truth, I thought all this meditation was kind of silly.I mean I not the kind of guy that will sit cross legg and chant some mantra from India.

But boy was I wrong! Meditation is not silly.

I am 10 weeks clean from cigarette because I learned to meditate. Meditation taught me to stop "trying to quit" and "made me quit" effortlessly.

Meditation is a simple thing to do but it is so powerful that it took away my desire for a smoke without the cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

Now I can enjoy the taste of food without having to drown it in salt because my taste buds were numb to all the years of smoking and my sense of smell has returned to where I can't even stand the smell of cigarettes anymore.

But the best thing of all is the money I am saving. I may can retire in 4 years after all with the money I am saving from not buying cigarettes anymore.

If you have been smoking for years like me and loved smoking but realize that the cost is not worth it anymore, then click on the meditation link below, and try a free preview. It can be the best decision you'll ever make.http://8d284gl7z0urhvdr2m7ewo1mdo.hop.clickbank.net/

Yoga: The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 05:37 AM PST

By Joan Moran

It's the holiday season. We are probably thinking about buying gifts for family and friends right now. But have you thought about giving yourself a gift? How many times do you give yourself a really important gift in your life? I don't mean a cashmere sweater gift. I don't mean a facial or massage gift. I'm talking about a gift that makes you feel blissful inside yourself, a gift that uplifts your spirit, that makes you more enlightened, more positive and more conscious than you have ever felt before. What kind of gift would that be, you ask? "I don't know any gift that I can find in my life that comes near that kind of gift," you say. "Where could I find such a wonderful and bountiful gift?"

If you practice yoga, you are one step ahead of me. Yoga has many benefits that impact our emotional, physical, psychological and spiritual states. These benefits are unparalleled gifts that we give ourselves through the practice of yoga. These gifts keep giving, keep enriching our life and keep stretching us to be more conscious and mindful. Yoga makes us less reactive, less resistant and a whole lot more peaceful. Now, that's what I call a real gift! And you know what? We can give ourselves that gift any time we want, any day of the year throughout the rest of our life.

During the holiday season, we get very busy, very consumed with ritual activities, family logistics -- the kids are home for the holidays and we've got to be prepared and get ready for the December stress party. Or the grandchildren are coming and you've got to figure out where everyone is going to sleep; don't forget to stock up the fridge at Costco. There are school pageants and office parties, and festivities of all kinds with churches and temples. You've got to get ready for the holiday shopping? Well, that takes more time than you even have.

More than probably any other emotional impact on our sense of well-being is the well-worn feeling of depression. I asked one of my yoga classes today, the most vocal class, of course, what causes stress at holiday times. Some of my yoginis already looked stressed out. Big silence in the room. No one wanted to answer, so I called on my most vocal student, a woman who I adore. I think her sense of humor and ironic take on life are truly amazing.

"Julie, what do you think about the holiday stress factor?" I asked her. She looked up at me with a stone face. "I think about all the people I loved who have died in December during the holiday season and it sucks."

I've surrendered and accepted that my mother died three years ago on December 15. I don't associate the holidays with the death of my mother, or high school graduations with the death of my 18-year-old nephew, nor the death of my father with summer. My loved ones just happened to reach the end of their lives during certain months or seasons or events. When I think about those I've lost, I truly smile with gratitude and remember how I loved them so much and how important they were in my life.

Julie then said: "That's why I think we should practice more yoga in December. It makes me feel so much better to come to class and open my heart and mind." Everyone agreed.

My suggestion to everyone during the holidays is the same: Practice yoga more. If you just can't get out of the house, spend time in meditation for about 10 minutes twice a day. It can clear your mind and make you feel like you actually did get a spa treatment. It will open you up it to new and different experiences during the holidays. Now that's a great gift you can give yourself. And it doesn't cost a thing.

I am not immune to all the activities that ensue during the holidays. However, during the whirlwind month of December, I plan on retiring my stress and anxiety and focusing on yoga and meditation because this is the gift I cannot live without. This is the gift that clears my mind and brings joy to my soul. I can't wait to take my yin yoga class on Sunday; I can't wait to take a meditation workshop or maybe do an ecstatic chanting. I can't wait to go to yoga with my daughter-in-law over the Christmas holiday.

My wish for everyone during the holidays is to think more about yoga and meditation and less about buying; think more joy and bliss and less sorrow and depression. And if you are not a yogi yet, treat yourself to an introductory class and see what yoga is all about. And if you have fallen off the yoga wagon the last few months, return to where peace and hope reside.

Know one of the excellent retreats in India at Z Meditation in India

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

Article by Lily Candice

Retreats in India are gradually but steadily rising in popularity among visitors from almost every other part of the globe with vacationers seeking to obtain more from their holiday dollars than mere entertainment and relaxation. At these retreats in India, the major theme is the studying, learning and practice of meditation, meditation being the process of seeking to achieve a calmness of the mind, and consequently, the soul and body through age old methods. Retreats in India are available all over the country of India with different schools and approaches to the art and practice of meditation, such as that being provided by the Z Meditation Center.

The decision by the daily occupied worker or executive who has a couple of weeks of holiday available to her to invest that time and a little money by visiting one of several retreats in India could well turn out to be one of the most important decisions of a lifetime. At retreats in India, for an example, that being run by Z Meditation, the (student) vacationer will be accommodated in one of the most serene environments available anywhere, with the inclusion of views that on their own, can produce a relaxing feeling that will endure for a long while upon the viewer. The individual who has come to the realization of the need to free herself from probably decades of imbibing, keeping and acting on wrong knowledge, and wishes to embrace the true knowledge, ultimately freeing herself from the clouds that have been obscuring the vision of her inner mind, a visit to one of the excellent retreats in India will be most beneficial.

The Z Meditation Center provides facilities for retreats in India for the sincere seeker of total freedom of the mind. The minds of most of us have been so preconditioned that we see things and situations with a clouded vision, perceiving things that are not really there, but so conceived by many years of conditioning. The retreats organized by Z Meditation in India follow the course of Deep Deconditioning Inquiry and ! Radiant Mantras, which when diligently practiced will enable the murk within the mind of the individual to clear up so that a clear, unobstructed mind will be able to see things as they really are, providing the basis for proper and effective decision making.

Taking part of the retreats in India offered by Z Meditation also gives the student the opportunity to see a different form of life and living, will be introduced to healthy foods and personal practices, while we should not forget about the serene and breathtaking views of the environment in which he will be ensconced within.

The very viable vacation option of visiting retreats in India should be well considered as the positive benefits are much more than that delivered by other more expensive options, which may turn out to create more harm than good to the individual over the long run. Several retreats in India have been developed to a state in which they are now a tourist attraction in their own right. If we sum this with the spiritual benefits accruable from spending a short time in any one of the many retreats in India....

Benefits Of Doing Yoga To Improve Your Meditation

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 01:00 AM PST

Article by Spiritual Now Editors

It sometimes sounds confusing that Yoga can benefit you in meditation, as meditation is only a part of Yoga. However, in modern scenario, Yoga-Asanas are often referred to as Yoga in short and people often mean postures when they say that they are practicing Yoga for meditation. The basic benefit of Yoga-Asanas is to keep your body fit for the requirements of meditation. If you are not feeling well physically, you will find it hard to relax your mind and attaining the bliss that comes naturally with meditation. Body should work with the mind so that one can reach up to the level of soul, where the extreme bliss rests.

Yoga meditation, or Meditation supplemented with Yoga-Asanas, is beneficial in making a firm foundation and keeping you intact along the path. Though one can run bare-footed, but sometimes one feels that the regularity can't be maintained. Shoes helps in providing that regularity. Yoga meditation is like that: one wears the shoes of Yoga-Asanas and can meditate effectively and regularly. We would also refer to this thing as Yoga here, and we will try to find out the benefits that one experiences from Yoga meditation.

1. Flexibility

It is obvious that you are involved in continuous sitting for longer durations as you move with your practice of meditation. However, sometimes the body becomes very stiff and hinders your progress and regularity. Yoga meditation comes handy here, and can serve the purpose quite well. It gives your body the much needed flexibility to sustain the needs of meditation for long periods.

Sometimes your vocation involves much physical work and you find it very hard to keep your body in optimal condition for meditation. Yoga meditation has almost proven benefits for such kind of situation, and once you do it, you will also realize the advantages that you gain.

2. Energy

It is quite obvious that all types of exercises impart energy to your body, and Yoga meditation is no exception. When you spend time for Yoga and do the medita! tion the reafter, you feel energized to the extent that you will be able to keep your body in erect position, which is extremely important for meditation. Whether you sit for 10 minutes or for 1 hour, you will feel that your physical being is supporting the needs of your mental and spiritual beings.

3. Relaxation and Calmness

Yoga meditation helps in getting deeper control on your mind, as you are able to feel your body quite easily. The muscles and joints are not causing any problem that can distract your mind. Yoga meditation helps in gaining body calmness that ultimately leads to mental calm. One can feel the body in a better way and can relax well, thus, initializing the founding steps of meditation.

It goes without saying that if you are practicing meditation; you need to supplement it with Yoga. Yoga meditation can bring the results early and make them lasting. Yoga meditation will make you feel better physically, mentally, and spiritually, of course.

AntiGravity Yoga for Fun Flying Fitness

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 05:37 AM PST

As a yogahlic, I am constantly performing yoga and researching it on the web. I was ecstatic to find a fairly new type of yoga called AntiGravity Yoga. This looks fun, healthy and exciting. I can't wait to find out if there is a fitness club nearby that offers a class so I can try this out for myself.

Antigravity Yoga for Fun Flying Fitness
Wikimedia Commons/ESerranoAG

What is AntiGravity® Aerial Yoga?

AntiGravity Yoga is performed on a special hammock rather than a mat. Envision yourself performing yoga while floating in the air, not far from the ground, and you have an idea of what this exciting new workout looks like. As a yogaholic and former gymnast this looks like a dream come true for me.

Christopher Harrison created AntiGravity Yoga to improve health and increase physical activity. He wanted a workout that was both beautiful and enjoyable, and I believe he created exactly that. It should come as no surprise that Harrison is a former professional dancer and world-class competitive gymnast.

What are the benefits of AntiGravity Yoga?

With AntiGravity Yoga you get all the benefits associated with any type of yoga, such as increased flexibility, toned muscles and stress relief. You also get the following added benefits:

* A great core workout

* Building of upper body strength

* Feeling relaxed and revitalized

* Being able to perform inversion poses without any pressure on the body

* A low-impact cardio workout

* Decompression of the spine

Who can benefit from AntiGravity Yoga?

The simple answer to this question is everyone, but I want to get a bit more specific.

- Writers, artists and designers

One women, Costanza Guerrini, says her best ideas come to her while hanging upside down during AntiGravity Yoga. Guerrini is a CEO of an architecture and design firm.

- Office workers

AntiGravity Yoga is great for those who sit at a desk for several hours because it offers hip-opening poses. Gravity helps to open the hips and allows the body to extend a little more than it would otherwise.

- Cyclists

Since cyclists generally have tight hips and AntiGravity Yoga helps to open the hips, this form of exercise is especially helpful to these athletes.

-Those who want to get taller

More research is needed and is underway, but some people claim to have gained an inch after taking AntiGravity Yoga classes.

- Anyone, regardless of their shape, size or fitness level

This is excellent because anyone, regardless of their body size or shape, can participate in AntiGravity Yoga. The hammocks can hold up to 1000 pounds and have been tested to do so. Sarah Shrader is an AntiGravity Yoga instructor and says, "Because you are offset with your weight in the hammock, you are able to get into deeper stretches."

I have even more incentive to find a class since I am a writer (meaning that I also sit at a desk for several hours a day) and am short.

Try AntiGravity Yoga; it is new, exciting and good for you!

Yoga and Knee pain solution

Posted: 10 Dec 2011 12:00 AM PST

Article by Subodh Gupta

Every year, about 11 million Americans complain to doctors about knee pain. Roughly 21 million American people have osteoarthritis of the knee (a degenerative disease in which the cartilage gradually decays and fails to provide the shock absorbing padding that cushions the bones). Orthopedic surgeons performed more than 1.2 million such surgeries in 1996 alone.

Many older people suffer from this painful arthritic condition, however this knee pain is not only restricted to older people but healthy young people are also getting effected by it, for example dancers, athlete for various reason. Reason for knee injuries/ painLets see what are the reason that people get knee pain. Most common risk factor for knee pain are old age, obesity, knee injuries because of hyperextension, misalignment of knee, inappropriate way of doing exercise, tight muscles or because of combination of above factors etc.

Hyperextension at the knee joint occur when the joints are overly flexible. In this case legs extend too far and move past the point of being straight. Some people may be born with this condition however most people develop it by habitually locking their knee.

Knee injuries can also occur because the way we stand and walk. For example when we stand straight we need to be aware that whether our body weight is distributed properly on both feet or not. It is not very uncommon to observe that one side of heals of people shoes is wearing out more than the other side creating imbalance at the knee joint.

Imbalance at knee joint also occurs because of underdeveloped inner quadriceps and strong outer quadriceps. In this case tendency of strong quadriceps is to pull the kneecap towards the outside of legs I.e. result in imbalance.

Knee joints in our body can be healthy if the muscles that support them are healthy I.e. both strong and supple. Tight outer hips and hamstrings put undue pressure pressure on knee joints. Athletic activity cause these muscles to tighten up and along with the ! aging pr ocess condition become worse (unless proper stretching are done after each workout when body is warm).

Yoga provide effective solutionYoga is excellent for increasing strength and flexibility in knees. More and more doctors are recommending yoga to their patients who are rehabilitating after a ligament injury.

The benefit with yoga is that it helps to strengthen both the inner and outer quadriceps, which help to keep the kneecap in alignment. It strengthens the quadriceps, the hamstrings, the calves and the ankles- all fairly consistently. Strength in these areas all help to support a weak knee.

Another benefit that yoga give for the knees is the increase in blood flow and nourishment that it sends to the surrounding joints and ligaments. As with most poses in yoga, the action of squeezing a body part, and then releasing it, sends lots of nutrient rich blood to the area that was affected in the posture. Many postures do this for the knees in yoga.

Yoga posture like staff pose(Dandasana),Half downward facing dog pose (Ardha Adho Mukha Svanasana),Seat of power pose (Utkatasana Pose), simple balancing pose, Half frog pose (Ardha Bhekasana) etc can be very helpful for rejuvenating knee joints.

Practiced with care, yoga posture can contribute to the long-term health of your knees by strengthening your quadriceps, opening your stiff hips, and teaching your body improved alignment and movement patterns that transfer into your everyday activities.

Note: It is important to practice yoga with caution. Initially Some yoga posture for example, padmasana and yoga style like Ashtanga yoga mysore can be avoided. Yoga posture that are done incorrectly can actually injure the knee.

Remember most important rule in practicing yoga posture is that any slightest pain is indication from you body that something is wrong and come out of it. If starting yoga practice, it is strongly recommended that you begin in presence of qualified yoga teacher and do listen to your doctor advise.

Yoga Gets into Med School - Boston University

Yoga, BU MED, Heather Mason, Embodied Health - Mind-Body Approaches to Well-Being

BU medical students hold a position called downward dog. Photos by Vernon Doucette

Emily Holick thought yoga was for sissies. But as a graduate student hoping to reduce stress, she gave it a try. And hated it. What irked the former college tennis player most was her inability to do a move that everyone else had perfected—the wheel, a complex pose that contorts the body into an upside down bridge. Holick says it was only her competitive spirit that kept her going.

Four years later, Holick (MED'14) believes that yoga has transformed her life. Although her first year of medical school was brutal, leaving her stressed and questioning whether she had what it takes to be a doctor, her yoga practice helped her cope. Then a curious string of events pulled her out of the abyss.

Holick took a healing arts class with Robert Saper, a School of Medicine associate professor of family medicine and director of integrative medicine, known for his research involving yoga and lower back pain relief. He recommended that she meet Heather Mason, a yoga therapist and trainer interested in creating a class for medical students, an idea Holick had toyed with herself.

"We met in a coffee shop in Cambridge and started dreaming," Holick says. "It was amazing to meet someone who independently said this is something that medical students need."

That java-infused dream has become a reality since, as Mason, Holick, and a team of medical students lobbied for its creation. Starting spring semester, MED will offer an elective called Embodied Health: Mind-Body Approaches to Well-Being. Mason will lead a weekly hour-long yoga session, followed by a half hour discussion of the practice's medical benefits. The class will also be part of a research study led by Saper, Mason, and Allison Bond (MED'14) that will attempt to document changes in the students' mental health. A pilot of the elective, called MED Yoga, or Mind-Body Education and Development Yoga, ran this semester, quickly attracting a following of 30-plus students.

While yoga sessions for med students are not unique (the University of Connecticut Medical Center and Georgetown Medical School both offer them), teaching students about yoga's physiological and neurological effects is. Saper, who will be one of several guest speakers addressing issues from positive thinking to the neurobiology of stress over the 11 weeks of class, says the class "targets the unique challenges and stressors medical students face as well as offers a fairly advanced level of intellectual content appropriate for the medical students."

And there are stressors: according to a 2009 study in Academic Medicine, nearly 25 percent of medical school students will be depressed at some point during their education. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study in 2010 showing that the empathy medical students feel decreases as they progress through their four years.

BU MED yoga, Heather Mason, Embodied Health: Mind-Body Approaches to Well-Being

Yoga therapist Heather Mason leads a breathing exercise before a yoga session designed for medical students at the School of Medicine.

Mason believes that yoga can be a powerful antidote. On a recent Wednesday late afternoon, she tinkered with speakers that send a low chime through the airy space of the MED student lounge where the class was meeting. While she adjusted the sound, nearly three dozen students unfurled yoga mats toward a bank of windows facing the setting sun. Some had come directly from cramming at the library for a pulmonology exam the next day.

Mason, a petite 35-year-old brunette, spent three years in Southeast Asian monasteries as an out-of-the box method of battling chronic depression. That experience led her to earn master's degrees in Buddhist studies and psychotherapy, and another now in progress in neuroscience.

The New York native paces methodically as she leads the class into a rhythmic ujjayi breath, a diaphragmatic breathing technique. "The chime is like an anchor bringing you back to the breath," she says. "Inhale, lift, and open your heart center."

Some students stumble from move to move; others slide into position as if into a second skin, eyes forward, bodies steady. After an hour, Mason directs them to close their eyes, lie down, and relax. Their limp bodies rest on a rainbow of yoga mats.

Mason asks them to count their breaths per minute. She knows that the ideal count of five or six has been shown to increase heart rate variability, which can ameliorate problems like depression, epilepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder, and cardiac disease.

Breaths counted, Mason segues from the practice of yoga to a short dissertation on the neuroscience of yoga, something that has been studied by Chris Streeter, a MED associate professor of psychiatry and neurology. In one study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Streeter used magnetic resonance spectroscopy to explain why yoga practitioners report a greater improvement in mood and a decrease in anxiety than people who simply walked for relaxation. Streeter found that the yoga group had higher levels of the neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid, or GABA, the likely cause of positive mood changes.

Mason explains to the class how the ujjayi breath and the chiming work together, medically, to bring about a healthful biological balance of breath, heartbeat, and other functions. When the lecture ends, Mason bows, and thanks her class with a namaste, a customary gesture on parting.

Mason says the first goal of MED Yoga was to let doctors know how yoga could help their patients, but then she realized how it could help the doctors themselves.

That message resonates with Holick, who feels refreshed by yoga and has renewed faith in her career choice. The past year has "made me realize that I can make medicine my own thing," she says. "It's an amazing profession that I really can help people in. Sometimes I really lose sight of these bigger things."

For more information about the Embodied Health elective, visit the School of Medicine's Enrichment site. Interested first- and second-year medical students can contact Ana Bediako to enroll.

Creating a Meditation Space

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 11:00 PM PST

Article by Helene Abonales

People frequently find a hard time relaxing in their homes. Creating a special space in your real estate property where you can spend some time centering your inner peace is a key element in incorporating a practice of meditation.

Meditation helps you to relax your physical and mental health. It can help reduce high blood pressure, stress and migraine. Also, it allows you to empty your mind and thoughts and be replaced by a peaceful sensation.

Look around your home such as the paintings on the wall that always give you sense of peace and the flowers in your garden that you love to smell.

Search for the area of your home that have an open window and is private, simple and comfortable. The objects you see in your home will set your mood. These things will help you unwind. Go for objects that give you inspiration and energy. Make your meditation space personal and Find tranquility even if you are at home.

Find a quiet and peaceful place in your home where you can make your meditation space. Make sure that this area is free from distractions and loud sounds. Surround your meditation space with things that can develop your inner serenity. You may place a pillow and cozy blanket or put a picture on the wall or anything that will make you feel comfortable to relax your mind and body. Select items that will consider your senses such as a small fan which is great for white noise.

You can create a space where you can sit, stretch and lay to your comfort if you do not have enough space at home for meditation. You can just choose a corner of your bedroom.

Home meditation space enables us to improve our daily meditation practice. It is a place where we can find rest.

Overview of meditation for stress management

Overview of meditation for stress management (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

What is meditation?
Meditation is any form of a family of practices in which practitioners train their minds or self-induce a mode of consciousness to realize some benefits. It is generally an inwardly oriented, personal practice, which individuals can do by themselves. Prayer beads or other ritual objects may be used during meditation. Mindfulness may involve invoking or cultivating a feeling or internal state, such as compassion, or attending to a specific focal point. This is one of the most recommended solutions for stress busting. The effects of meditation on the body are opposite to what stress has, it restores the body to a calm state, helping it to repair itself, and preventing new damage due to the physical effects of stress.

Why choose meditation?
Research has shown, when practicing meditation, the heart rate and breathing slow down, the blood pressure normalizes, the oxygen used becomes more efficient, and stress-related perspiration reduces. The adrenal glands produce less cortisol, and it is also known to improve your immune function. Your mind clears and your creativity increases. People who meditate regularly find it easier to give up habits like smoking, drinking and drug abuse. Mindfulness research is still fairly new, but promising.

How does it work?
There are various methods and forms of meditating, but the most sought after and effective method involves sitting in a relaxed position and clearing your mind. Focusing on something or on your own breathing even chanting along helps. It's necessary to have at least 5 to 20 distraction-free minutes to spend. Meditating for longer sessions bring greater benefits, but sometimes starting slowly can help you maintain the practice in the long term It's helpful to meditate in silence and privacy, but as you get more experienced at it, they don't remain mandates. Many practitioners of meditation attach a spiritual component to it, but it can also be a secular exercise.

Meditation versus other stress management methods
Medications and herbal therapies are available for the management of stress, but unlike them meditation has no potential side effects. It even works very well for people with physical limitations that restrict them from participating in strenuous physical exercise for stress relief. No special equipment is required and it is absolutely free. However, it does take discipline and commitment, so some people may find it more difficult to maintain as a habit without the help of a partner or group for added motivation. Also, some people may find it more difficult to free their minds of the thoughts of the day, and thus find it more difficult than methods like blogging or methods that in themselves are distracting, like physical exercise. However, the time and effort it takes to learn and practice is well worth it in terms of the benefits it provides.

Yoga and weight loss

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Article by John B Galt

Yoga is much more that postural alignment and breathing. Yoga is about transformation, not hamstrings, but along the way we have to take care of them. Yoga is about learning from direct experience. Yoga is not a medical practice, but it has been shown to be very helpful in many ways. Yoga is especially ideal for people that are overweight, elderly, pregnant, or all three.

Yoga

Yoga teachers will often refer to "your practice," which means your individual experience with yoga as it develops over time. Yoga is intimately connected to the religious beliefs and practices of the Indian religions. Yoga, in general, is a spiritual practice or discipline that helps the individual unify his/her body, mind, and heart. Yoga will open your eyes to things you have not experienced before. Yoga is about learning from direct experience.

Body

But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. In this treatise Swatmarama introduces Hatha Yoga as 'a stairway to the heights of Raja Yoga', hence a preparatory stage of physical purification that renders the body fit for the practice of higher meditation. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical exercises, or "asanas", controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation. Asanas teach poise, balance & strength and are practiced to improve the body's physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment.

Meditation

Meditation is a set of widely disparate techniques from various places whose ultimate purpose is to get you to relax deeply. In addition to practicing the poses, yoga classes may also include instruction on breathing, call and response chanting, meditation, or an inspirational reading by the teacher. As a general term in Hinduism it has been defined as referring to "technologies or disciplines of asceticism and meditation which are thought! to lead to spiritual experience and profound understanding or insight into the nature of existence. Later, with the rise of Hatha yoga, asana came to refer to all the "postures" Pranayama ("Life Force Control"): Control of prāna, life force, or vital energy, particularly, the breath Pratyahara ("Abstraction"): Reversal of the sense organs Dharana ("Concentration"): Fixing the attention on a single object Dhyana ("Meditation"): Intense contemplation of the nature of the object of meditation Samadhi ("Liberation"): merging consciousness with the object of meditation.

Yoga is primarily a way of life, not something which is divorced from life. Yoga is not running away from home and human habitation, but a process of moulding one's attitude to home and society with a new understanding. Yoga is not a turning away from life; it is spiritualization of life. Yoga is not a religion, but an aid to the practice of the basic spiritual truths in all religions.

Real World Meditation: Why Being Present Matters - Huffington Post

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 09:00 PM PST

Last Wednesday night I completed a 12 day silent meditation retreat at Karme Choling, Shambhala International's Buddhist Meditation Center in Vermont. Literally as soon as it was over at 11:30 p.m. I said my goodbyes, got in my car with a friend and drove the six hours back to New York City. After driving all night I arrived home at around 6 a.m. I slipped into bed with Cyndi and Leroy Brown (our chocolate toy poodle) and took a nap for an hour, then got up, re-packed my bag, put on my black suit, and grabbed a taxi to go to JFK Airport at 10 a.m.

Landing in LA, I picked up a rental car and drove straight to the Beverly Hilton just in time for the ASCAP Film and TV awards. The very next night I headed over to the Westin Bonaventure for the Daytime Emmy Awards. I was up for one for the music we composed for One Life to Live.

This trip provided perhaps an unusually stark contrast coming out of retreat, but even in less stressful circumstances, the experience of participating in an intensive meditation retreat and then returning to our ordinary life can provide an extremely vivid transition, and with that a chance to see our habits and patterns in high relief.

On this occasion my perception was that people are just people -- we are all basically living in a dream of expectation and disappointment, with an occasional moment of wakefulness shining through. In the retreat, the awake moments were accented; at the Emmys the expectation and disappointment felt thick and solid and heavy by comparison. Anyhow that was my perception in transition.

From a certain point of view, going on an intensive meditation retreat is a radical thing to do. There are so many ways we can spend our time, so many vacations we still want to take, so many places to go, things to see and do. The idea of dedicating a weekend, a week, or longer to practicing meditation can easily slide to the bottom of the "to do" list.

It can be so helpful to understand the "view" of any particular practice we undertake, particularly retreat practice -- what are we going to be working with, how are we going to go about it and how can we manage whatever dramas unfold, both internal and external.

The essential quality of meditation practice on retreat is that by simplifying our world to the bare essence of simply being present, we have an unparalleled opportunity to see how our own mind works -- to actually see the lenses and filters through which we experience our reality.

It is the one activity we participate in that is reductive rather than additive. There may be some techniques involved -- we may be cultivating mindfulness or loving kindness and compassion, but essentially we are simply resting naturally in our present awareness and seeing whatever arises with an open impartial mind.

Along the way we may experience intense boredom, frustration, emotionality, peace, happiness, spaciousness and all the rest of it, but the one thing that is clear is that whatever we are experiencing is being generated by our own state of mind. The practice is a mirror so we can see ourselves more clearly and accurately, and hopefully develop more compassion for ourselves and thereby for others as well.

Re-entering our everyday world after a period of 20 minutes or two weeks of meditation practice, we have the opportunity to see ourselves entering the action. Of course, we may also have a heightened sensitivity to the obscurations, fear and cloaking -- what we call in Shambhala the "cocoon" -- the web of habitual patterns and manipulation that passes for authenticity but is really a kind of camouflage.

Unlike short bursts of meditation, retreat practice allows us to go much deeper into our exploration of what is really going on in our mind and heart. Coming out of retreat is an equally challenging and important part as we begin to integrate what we have gleaned into our everyday reality.

If you've done any kind of retreat practice and feel like chiming in about it, let's hear what it was like for you!

Yoga: The Gift That Keeps on Giving - Huffington Post

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 08:00 PM PST

Yoga For Weight Loss - How To Lose Weight With Yoga

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 07:00 PM PST

Article by Franchis Adam

Excess weight gain has become a phenomenon in today's age, when lifestyles have become sedentary, and food more liberal with extra calories. Today our children prefer T.V. over their friends and play, merely a reflection of their parents who also somewhere prefer T.V. over socializing or even over spending time with their children (if they spend some time surely some running around will help burn some calories). These are only a few factors, which have resulted in increasing amount of people with the problem of excess weight or obesity. The practice of yoga makes the body strong and flexible and helps to improve the overall function of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and hormonal systems. Yoga assists us in releasing mental stress bringing clarity and peace of mind. Yoga opens a door into your heart and helps you to practice self-love and self-acceptance so that you become emotionally stable. But this only the beginning of a life-long journey towards your core, the realization of your true, essential self, the ultimate aim of yoga. Yoga has helped me to lose a substantial amount of weight. In my experience, when you remember who you are and align yourself with what is truly important to you, you will return to your true nature of health and happiness and your body will return to it's perfect weight.

Taking deep breath in yoga is very useful to enhance the oxygen intake to the body cells containing the fat cells in body. Other yoga asanas like tree pose, sun salute, triangle pose, locust pose, camel pose, wind releasing pose, cat pose, angle pose, Hero pose II and I, aeroplane pose are also useful to reduce body weight.

Why, then, don't more people practice yoga.

People think of yoga as being passive and mystical and not relating to to their lives. Yoga improves both the physical body and the mind. It's widely practiced in Eastern countries but not so in the West. Only 2% of the American adult population practice yoga.

Obesity and Yoga

* Yoga has considered a! ll aspec ts of Obesity (physical, emotional and mental) * Regular practice of Yoga and controlled life style reduces obesity (weight is reduced). * Yoga makes human being agile, efficient and slim. * Yoga is suitable for people in any age group.

Kundalini, which was introduced to this country in 1969 by Yogi Bhajan, is more active, combining various modes of breathing, movement and meditation. It is based on the idea that body energy that's coiled below the base of the spine can be tapped so that it travels upward through different energy centers or chakras until it reaches the head. At this point one arrives at one's highest potential.

Some of us have a habit of eating between the meals. Here also Yogic practices come handy. One can take the help of Yogic aids when feeling tempted in between the meals. In such situations one may intentionally turn to Yoga rather than looking for some snacks. The knowledge and power derived from Yoga also makes us aware of problems like obesity which may prevent the individual from overeating. Such is the magic and charisma of Yoga that you tend to attain a balanced weight i.e. if your weight is normal, it will remain the same where as in case of underweight, you will gain weight. Yoga for weight loss can also be used in another way even if you don't have an eating disorder. It can tune your mind and body to be in complete synchrony. Even if you are otherwise completely healthy, yoga for weight loss and overall balance of your body and mind can still obviously be a good thing.

Yoga Pose Copyright Bid Too Much of a Stretch, U.S. Says in Bikram Battle - Bloomberg

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 07:00 PM PST

Yoga poses such as head-to-knee stretches can't be copyrighted in the U.S. because they are "exercises" rather than "choreography," federal regulators said.

The e-mail is contained in a response filed today to Bikram's Yoga College of India's complaint against New York- based Yoga to the People. Washington lawyer Elliott Alderman, hired by the defense to assist in copyright review, sought the determination from the Copyright Office.

Evolation Yoga, with studios in cities including Buffalo and Brooklyn, New York, and Yen Yoga, in Traverse City, Michigan, also were sued. All three lawsuits were filed in federal court in Los Angeles.

The Copyright Office decision won't put an end to the litigation since the suits also claim trademark infringement and violation of the teacher-certification agreements.

Breathing Exercises

Bikram Choudhury -- and his affiliated Bikram Yoga studios -- teaches a strictly regimented type of yoga that lasts for 90 minutes and includes 26 poses, two breathing exercises and a scripted dialogue in a room that is heated to 105 degrees. Yoga to the People founder Greg Gumucio was a former student of Choudhury, as were some of the instructors at Evolation and Yen Yoga.

Choudhury said in his complaint that each studio violated his copyrights and trademarks as well as limitations on how and where his students can teach his method.

Jordan Susman, a Los Angeles lawyer who represents Yoga to the People and Gumucio, said yoga sequences and poses can't be copyrighted. The defendants said the hot yoga they offer differs from Bikram yoga. Each studio offers other types of yoga as well.

Website Petition

Gumucio created a website, www.yogatruth.org, and has almost 8,000 signatures of people who agree yoga should not "be privatized."

Robert Gilchrest, a lawyer at Silverman Sclar Shin & Byrne PLLC in Los Angeles who represents Choudhury, couldn't be immediately reached for comment on today's filing.

The case is Bikram's Yoga College of India L.P. v. Yoga to the People, Inc., 11-cv-07998, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles). The other cases filed are Bikram's Yoga College of India L.P. v. Raiz, 11-cv-7377, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles) and Bikram's Yoga College of India L.P. v. Evolation Yoga LLC., 11- cv-05506, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles).

Yoga Fitness Equipment for the Beginner

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 05:00 PM PST

Article by Sarah Russell

One of the great things about yoga is that you can practice anywhere, without any equipment at all. It's also possible for just about anyone to do yoga, no matter what their age or fitness level, although adjustments may need to be made to the exercises. When you perform yoga, you should be sure to wear comfortable, loose clothing made from natural, breathable fibers.

Traditionally, this type of exercise is done barefoot. However, it you're in an environment where that's not convenient, or you're not comfortable with it, you can also wear socks, or soft slippers. It's best to practice on an empty stomach. This means avoiding large meals shortly before attending class, although it's okay to have fruit, energy bars, or granola an hour or so before class. You may want to drink some water before you begin, as well, so that you don't become dehydrated or light-headed while practicing. Be sure that your stomach isn't full enough to be uncomfortable when moving, and clear your head and throat before beginning.

However, just because you can do yoga with no equipment doesn't mean that a few items can't make practice easier. Some equipment can help you achieve postures more easily, or help you balance. Proper alignment is also easier to achieve with the aid of yoga equipment, particularly for beginners. This is because it helps support the muscles, and removes a lot of the strain that some poses cause. For advanced practitioners, this kind of equipment isn't necessary, as the muscles and connective tissues have been trained to support the body. However, if you're just getting started, you can hurt yourself doing an overly difficult pose.

Yoga has been helping people around the world get into shape and feel at peace for a long time, although it's new in the Western world. Originating in India, it's been around for thousands of years in different forms. The most popular type in the US and Europe is Hatha Yoga, although you may encounter other types as well. Yoga can help you feel more rela! xed and energized, less tense, and help you get a fitter, healthier body. Remember that doing yoga isn't just about the postures. You should also allow it to affect your mind and emotions, removing tension and anxiety. All yoga is easier with the right equipment. Here are some basics that you might encounter in class:

Yoga mats provide more cushioning if you're practicing on a hard floor, like poured concrete or hardwood. They also help you get traction, preventing slipping of the hands or feet, which can spoil a yoga position or even cause injury.

Yoga bolsters are a specialized type of pillow that gives support for the abdomen, spine and legs.

Yoga blankets add more softness and warmth to yoga mats, which are often made of plastic or foam. They can help you feel more comfortable and relaxed, helping you get into the right mood for yoga.

Yoga straps are made from nylon or cotton, and can help you if you need to grab a certain body part for a pose, but can't stretch far enough. They add greater flexibility to poses, and allow you to hold them a little bit longer than you would be able to unassisted.

While yoga equipment isn't vital for yoga practice, it can be helpful, particularly if you have a disability, injury, or are just getting started. Remember that it's okay not to be an expert when you begin learning yoga, and that modifying poses or using yoga equipment to help you isn't cheating. This equipment is made to help you perform yoga more easily and get the most out of your workout.
