Different Kinds of Yoga

Yoga originally came from India and it dates back over five thousand years ago. Being the oldest defined practice of self development, yoga has greatly developed over the centuries resulting in a variety of yoga practices and branches.Yoga serves the purpose of harmonizing and identifying the equilibrium between body and mind, but each yoga branch is set to serve different needs and purposes.

Hatha Yoga

If you are interested in increasing the state of your well-being you should direct yourself to the practice of hatha yoga. It is considered to be one of the primary forms of modern physical therapy. Apart from meditation, which is the common practice for all yoga branches, hatha yoga teaches you a series of important postures (known in yoga terminology under the name of asanas) and breathing exercises (entitled pranayamas).

Karma Yoga

Another common and highly appreciated branch of yoga which promotes the principle according to which everything that happens to us in our present existence is a direct consequence of our previous actions. As a result, karma yoga encourages its practitioners to try to eliminate all the negativism and the selfishness from their present, in order to avoid having to deal with them in the future. Actually, karma yoga should be practiced everyday, including when being at work, and activities carried out with the precise goal of helping other people, such as Peace Corps, can be easily associated with the karma yoga path.

Raja Yoga

Another branch of yoga, which, this time, places a great accent on the meditation. Known also under the name of classical yoga, raja yoga is a more complex form of training, which is why it typically starts with hatha yoga, in order to prepare the body for more advanced training stages. Studies have demonstrated that the persons attracted by this form of yoga are, as in general, more introspective people, interested in profound meditation. Moreover, various religious groups devote themselv! es to th is yoga path, which is close to a monastic or contemplative lifestyle.

Jnana Yoga

Jnana yoga is a branch of yoga directed mainly to the scholars and it implies a development of the intellect through the study of yoga tradition scripts and texts. It is also known to be the yoga of the heart and wisdom. Although it is described as the most difficult of all yoga practices, jnana yoga is also one of the most direct and challenging paths.

Bhakti YogaAnother popular yoga branch, which promotes and sustains the idea of devotion, is the bhakti yoga. The main message transmitted by this yoga path is that there is something divine in any form of creation. Thus, it is important to tolerate, accept and respect any forms of life we come in close contact with.

These are, without any doubt, only a few of the various yoga branches or paths, but, nevertheless, the important thing is that anyone can find a yoga practice, which is able to promptly suit his or her needs of finding the inner equilibrium and peace.

Yoga for Fun and Profit

Article by Alexander Holle

Stress levels around the world are on the rise. In order to deal with this, relaxation and stress reduction therapies have sprung up from everywhere. Yoga instruction is no longer just a fringe population idea. It is now a mainstream fitness methodology. Yoga certifications are now available from many places in North America. As a result of this, yoga instructors are now available everywhere. Each gym now offers yoga classes from certified yoga instructors. It's time we understood what this is all about and where we are going with respect to the fitness industry. The word yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning joining or union. What are we joining? The human being consists of several entities commonly referred to as body-mind-spirit. An integrated human being is the goal of yoga. We are joining the different pieces of the human being to make an integrated, holistic being that is attuned to one goal. The body, mind and spirit are all integrated with a common attitude and viewpoint. This is different from the state of being where the body wants to satisfy one need and the mind another and the spirit yet a third. This is the state during which mental storms occur and the body responds in turn with a manifestation of that mental vortex.Yoga seeks to align the human being using its own tool of breathing. When we breathe rhythmically, our body is more in tune with itself. We function better as an integrated being in a holistic way. Yoga was invented in India, about 5000 years ago, precisely to achieve the goal of integration. When our being is aligned our interaction with the world will be more efficient. We perform better at work and in our home life. Rela-tionships become easier. This is what yoga achieves. In India, yoga is taught and researched as a science at a place in Bangalore called the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusamdhana Samsthan (SVYASA). This means Yoga Research Institute. One can obtain intensive instruction in yoga and therapy techniques using yoga. Recently, I completed a month long certificate co! urse for yoga instructors at this institute. The yoga that is taught here is not just about the physical poses. The idea of yoga from the original meaning is to really integrate the whole human being. This involves all of our activities in life. We must be aligned and integrated during all of our tasks during the day. All of our activies can be divided into several broad categories. All actions like going to work, eating breakfast are classified as Karma yoga. All philosophical discussions are classified under Jnana yoga. Any devotional activities such as the singing of hymns or prayers are considered part of Bhakti yoga. The physical poses of Western ideas of yoga are a part of Raja yoga, which includes other methods for gaining mastery over the physical body. This is the original concept of yoga from India and is taught in that form at the SVYASA Institute. The institute is named after Swami Vivekananda who was a monk and scholar of Indian philosophy. In 1893, Swami Vivekananda was invited to speak at the Parliament of Religions, held in Chicago, on the topic of Hinduism. His speech became famous for explaining the unity of religions as many paths to God, and that Hinduism in its original sense encompassed that view. Swami Vivekananda wanted the Western world to understand Indian spirituality in the correct view, as a synthesis of the four types of yoga, which ultimately leads to the goal of spiritual evolution. SVYASA is dedicated to the education and research of yoga in this context. The school retains strict attention to the original sources of yoga from Sanskrit scripture. The teaching styles of the school and environmental factors do not cater to the Western lifestyle. Those who come from abroad must acclimatize themselves to the pure Indian way. Meals are served on the floor and must be eaten using the hands. Vegetarian Indian food is served. No cutlery is provided. Footwear must be left outside of all classes. Be prepared to literally be on your feet for long amounts of time. While the majority of the stu! dents ar e comfortably able to sit on the floor during the long lecture sessions, chairs are available for those who will not be able to survive in that position. The philosophy of discipline is everywhere, starting from the boot camp like nature of the roll call before each session. Students who miss a portion of the attendance will not receive their certificate. Attendance is considered a very important factor of the study. In addition, a strict code of uniforms is enforced. Women must wear the Indian dress of salwaar kameez, which is a tunic, and pant set made of 100% cotton. This dress could be modified to be more forgiving for yoga poses. Men must wear loose fitting track pants and t-shirt. This is more conducive to rigorous physical activity. It must be noted that everywhere the students of the yoga instructors course can be identified by their uniform. As attendance is strict, so is the keeping of students on the grounds. While exceptions can be made for justifiable reasons, students cannot usually leave the campus for any reason after the start of the course. The campus is 32 km north of the major city of Bangalore. Fortunately, Bangalore boasts many amenities including an international airport. The city of Bangalore itself is very multicultural. One can find the modern world mixed with the original flavour of India everywhere. The SVYASA institute has a city office in Bangalore from where a bus is arranged to take travellers to its campus outside the city in a place called Geddallahalli. The name of the campus is Prashanti Kutiram, which means abode of peace. While the name is very amenable to yoga studies, I found that one needs to practice yoga in sincerity to find the true peace, which is only inside the human being.A variety of personal interests and professional paths have led the author to her current role as a personal trainer and lifestyle consultant with over 20 years experience. Siva is an author, lecturer and Can-Fit-Pro certified personal trainer who specializes in body-mind-spirit consulting ! and trai ning women. Currently she is writing a book entitled Body, Mind, and Spirit Fitness, which discusses her particular style of training the complete being, rather than just the physical body.Siva is a yoga instructor, an expert on East Indian Philosophy and teacher of Sanskrit. She holds a doctorate in engineering from the University of Toronto and has balanced her time between personal training and engineering for over 20 years. In February 2005, Siva spent an intensive month studying a course for Yoga Instructors, at the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Institute in Bangalore, India to further her interest in yoga as a science of holistic living and not merely as yoga posture.

5 Minutes Meditation for Busy Folks

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 04:00 AM PST

Article by Uzo Onukwugha, MD

The greatest asset you have as a business person is your mind while your most expensive commodity is time. Five minutes meditation program gives you the best of both worlds. With a little practice in a little time, you come up with problem-solving ideas with amazing ease. You will really feel great about yourself and your friends will think you're a genius. This is because meditation puts you in the alpha state of mind that enhance creativity, blasts tension, and indecision. You know what to do on every occasion because you've learned to think on autopilot (I hate to say, 'think on your feet').

What is meditation? Meditation is the discipline of mental exercise that primes the brain and centers the heart to cultivate productive ideas. This encourages whole brain thinking that put you in the zone of peak performance. You must be in the know to be in the flow. Therefore, basic knowledge of how the mind works is necessary.

How does it work? It works when you work it into your consciousness. There are different segments of the brain which tend to work independently of one another. They are the left (intellectual) brain, the right (intuitive brain), the mid-brain (emotions) and the hind-brain (reticular activating system). When all the parts of the brain work together, you are focused, with self-limiting beliefs and obstacles debunked. If not, disarray, failure, and tension are the norm for 95% of the population. Meditation fixes these problems by making your brain develop complex and more efficient neuronal connections that encourages whole brain thinking--the way most geniuses and top achievers think. Joshua 1:8 says that with meditation, you shall be able to deal wisely with the affairs of this life. That sounds like genius to me!

Five minutes per session meditation shortens the process. Power loss by scattered thinking is minimized because you're focused on the results instead of rehearsing the problems. This is a powerful too for personal direction, goal-orientation and personal! power f or achievement. You'll be calm in the midst of turmoil. This is achieved by concurrent use of seven components of meditation.

1. Personalization: You must use personal pronouns in your affirmations when you repeat or recite your mantra. Don't use meaningless word from a guru or what you copied somewhere. Come up with your own tailor-made phrases based on specifics that you're programming for yourself. When you personalize words, you own them and emotions are involved. This is how you call up the help of the energy currency of your human spirit. This gusto forces you to achieve your goal sooner than later.

2. Localization: This is the ability to focus on one goal. Don't think of all your problems or challenges at the same time. Narrow your meditation session to one problem at a time. This is how you channel your energy to burn the problem just like a concentrated sun ray sets a piece of green paper ablaze. Yes, concentration is the heart of contemplation. However, your energy must force the mind to come up with solutions instead of rehearsing the problems.

3. Memorization: To save time, you must keep the solution to our problem or goal you're programming for your self at the back burner of your mind. For recall in subsequent session, you must repeat your mantra to yourself for it to stick in your deeper mind. Some people write it down and look at it. Writing alone increases retention by three hundred fold while highlighting with yellow and sky blue increases retention by three-fold. Highlighting with red calls for urgent action. The more senses you engage, the better your retention and recall including reading out loud to yourself. The greatest programming is what you tell yourself. It is powerful in shaping your self-image. It is called auto-suggestion. Note that all improvements in your performance is tied to improvements in your self-image. We don't see the world the way it is; we see the world the way we are. Reality is nothing, perception is everything. Whatever you habour in consci! ousness (memory bank) will sooner or later manifest as your reality. So, what you are storing in your spiritual hard-drive is what drives your destiny.

4. Verbalization: This is called learning by mouth. Positive confession is the most powerful way of getting the word deep down in your human spirit where the will and gut to make things happen reside. Know that it is your words that shape your mind, and not the other way round. Repetition is the key. Don't be tempted to stop by looking at circumstances. The words you speak also create pictures.

5. Visualization: This is based on the fact that the soul cannot think without pictures. It is rests on the premise that everything is created twice (in heart and mind) before it shows up in the physical world. A picture is truly more than a thousand words. It also takes descriptive words to create pictures. This art of making mental movies is like photography. Good photographers are always focusing only on the pictures they want to develop. This time, we prefer movies (motion pictures) to posters (stagnant) pictures. Get a picture or representation of your dream--what you want to be, do or have. Rehearse it again and again in your mind with gusto. Put emotion to it as if it has already been achieved. When the picture takes, the results show up sooner than later with consistent practice.

6. Actualization: This is the doing part. Doing is the most powerful part of programming. "What I hear, I may forget. What I see, I may not remember; but what I do is part of me," says a Chinese Proverb. No amount of mental rehearsal or confession can get the job done. Your thinking creates your reality; your action brings it to you. No blueprint has ever carried out itself and no war strategy has ever fought a battle. People do! The whole essence of steps 1 to 5 is to bring you to 6. Meditation is a process. The seven minutes forces the brain to think in a time frame by giving it deadline. This triggers the reticular activating system to provoke the subconscious mind to ! come wit h a solution. Subconscious mind is the center of the law of attraction in the brain. The thrill is in the doing. "It is the law of nature that those who do has the power and those who don't have not the power." Said Ralph Waldo Emerson.

7. Manifestation: This is the result of implementing steps 1 to 6. Conduct brings product. The fruit of consistent practice is the outward evidence of success that everybody sees. Most untrained folks don't understand the law of process. They tend to attribute success to luck. LUCK (laboring under correct knowledge) is application of all the steps.

How to Meditate: Putting the Pieces Together. Understanding the Seven P'S:

* Purpose: you must keep the reason why of your meditation before you. Value is always maximized when purpose is realized.* Prospects: Rehearse the benefits at the back of your mind. Your intention will keep your attention. Otherwise your mind will get bored and that will erode your confidence and believe in the system. When you lose sight of the benefits, you forget the blessings. Purpose and prospects are related.* Place: You must establish a specific place for meditation. The free wheeling life style of anything goes will not cut it. Otherwise you lose focus. Some people use a corner of their room or office to do it. Others meditate better on chair. I know people who have a meditation room.* Period. You must establish a specific time to start and end each session. Some people prefer early in the morning immediately after waking up from sleep. Whatever you do, don't meditate while driving, operating a machinery, after eating or when you're tired. Don't meditate on the bed or bedroom. The mind has learned to associate those with sleep. Your time window is a maximum of five minutes.* Preliminaries: These are preambles to get you ready. Remove belts, ties, shoes, and jewelries. you must make yourself comfortable.* Position: The best position is lotus or the Buddha position. It helps strengthen your body frame, improves your posture and! makes y ou a little uncomfortable so that you can't fall back to sleep. Never lie down. It is associated with sleep. Alternative positions include sitting on a chair and relaxing all your muscle groups. This works best at office hours.* Practice: Practice does not make perfect; practice make improvements and improvements then make perfect. Consistent practice eliminates poor performance. Doing is where all the techniques come together. Here you close your eyes as if you're praying to avoid distraction and encourage focus. Relax your muscles and recite your mantra from memory using personal pronouns. Some people play some soathing background music. You also visualize your end-goal as if it has already happened bringing gusto to the whole exercise. You should be done in less than five minutes.

A closing thought:

Meditation is the most important thing you can do for yourself and your business. If thinking is everything, then it is the most important thing. You can describe your life or you can bring your future into the present through meditation. Every great person that has ever live was a great thinker. Jeffrey Bezos used it to find Amazon.com; Pierre Omardiya did the same with eBay. Bill Gates consistently take a whole week off just to meditate. Bill calls it think week. Napoleon Hill's 'Think and Grow Rich' is all about the use of your mind power to create wealth.

So don't wait for flashes of inspiration to hit you like a thunder bolt, prime your goldmine and you will always produce gold. Creative juice will flow effortlessly and automatically with practice. You become a living magnet that attracts money, health, happiness, influence, protection andrelationship because you are aligned with the energy of the universe where every good thing originates. The laws of the universe are the laws of success. It is in our heart and mind that God teaches us the secret to unlock the vault of the universe. It's all within you waiting to be harnessed. "That's GREAT (God Rewards Every Active T! hinker), " says my friend, Ed Gray. Meditation is what makes the great, great and separates them from the rest.

Different Types Of Yoga

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 01:01 AM PST

Article by James Gunaseelan

Though yoga has its roots in India, it is fast catching on in the west and in the United States too it is gaining in popularity which means that there are more and more places where yoga is being taught and thus you will need to understand the different types of yoga before jumping in and learning any particular type. So, you need to check out Hatha yoga, Power yoga, Ashtanga yoga as well as Iyengar yoga and even Vinyasa and Bikram yoga, which are but a few of the more popular types of yoga being taught today.

The first type of yoga that you may want to learn more about is Hatha yoga in which 'ha' stands for sun and 'tha' which means moon and so you can expect to perform Hatha yoga slowly and in a gentle manner and thus you will find this yoga to be ideally suited if you are a beginner who needs to get acquainted with yoga and who does not know about various poses, but still wishes to unite the mind and body as well as the spirit.

Another types of yoga that is most often practiced is known as Ashtanga yoga and the name refers to the eight limbs and this is fast paced and intense and is based on a progression of poses that are performed in sync with breathing. As you may have guessed, this type of yoga is physically quite demanding since you will be moving from one pose to the other in sequence and once you perform Ashtanga yoga, you can expect to gain more stamina as well as attain strength as well as flexibility in your body.

Power Yoga as we know it today is basically an offshoot of Ashtanga Yoga that was part of Hindu tradition as well as the religion practiced in India, and this form of yoga lays emphasis on developing flexibility and also needing to have a proper workout that will invigorate the entire body and once performed, it will help you to concentrate better and also improves your mental balance. Power Yoga does not follow a set series of poses. Therefore, any Power Yoga class can vary widely from the next. What they have in common is an emphasis on strength and flex! ibility. The advent of Power Yoga heralded yoga's current popularity, as people began to see yoga as a way to work out.Power yoga brought yoga into the gyms of America. Power yoga is a westernized yoga and has as its basis Ashtanga yoga though in this form of yoga the sequence many not are the same as in Ashtanga yoga; though, you will still need to practice a number of poses that are performed continuously.

Another type of yoga is the one known as Iyengar yoga which helps you to properly align the body and in this form of yoga you need to hold a pose for an extended period of time instead of moving from one pose to the next one.

The other types of yoga are Vinyasa yoga and Bikram yoga and in the former type, there is need to perform movements in synchronization and which is fast in pace with more emphasis on your breathing while the latter type of yoga which is also referred to as hot yoga is practiced at high temperatures with humidity levels of forty percent and which involves twenty-six poses which help in loosening the muscles and which causes a lot of sweating thanks to the high temperatures.

How To Practice Naked Yoga

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:02 AM PST

Article by Vivasa Yogi

There are four main methods of practicing naked yoga: self-directed nude yoga practice, nude partner yoga, private naked yoga lessons, and group naked yoga classes.

Self-directed nude yoga practice

Self-directed naked yoga is as simple as taking off your clothes and doing the yoga you normally do, whether a vinyasa flow, holding poses, or some combination. Depending on the type of yoga you practice, pranayama and meditation may also be part of your naked yoga session.

Beginners and advanced yoga students alike can benefit from watching a yoga DVD during their self-directed practice from time to time, but this should not be the basis of a self-directed practice, whether naked or not, for it draws the attention outward rather than inward.

For the solo naked yoga practitioner, an uncluttered practice area is very important. You may want to think beforehand of the poses you would like to do, or simply see what asanas the prana (life force) leads you into. Be sure to leave some time for relaxation, and have blankets nearby in case you get cold.

Nude partner yoga

Practicing yoga in the nude with your partner is a wonderful way to build trust and intimacy. Not only that, but naked partner yoga allows you to explore the asanas in new and different ways, getting deeper stretches with less force.

In fact, many partner-yoga poses you simply can't do on your own, for they depend on four hands, four feet, or the balancing of body weight of more than one person.

There may be partner yoga classes already in your area, if not, yoga teachers sometimes offer partner yoga weekend workshops or private partner yoga lessons. You can take what you learn home to practice in the nude. There are also a number of quality books and videos on the subject, though some of the videos are more entertaining than instructional.

Private naked yoga lessons

One-to-one nude yoga lessons can be very helpful for your yoga practice, as you will have individu! alized a ttention to your breathing and alignment while in different asanas. It is much easier to see alignment without the restriction of clothes. For a case study, see Nude Yoga (not safe for work).

Practicing nude yoga in front of someone also invites you to drop your inhibitions. At first it is very scary to "open up" so much in front of another person, but this can also be very freeing, inviting us to be more accepting and less judgmental of ourselves. In turn, we become more accepting and less judgmental of others.

To find a yoga instructor who will have a nude practice session with you, your first stop would be the yoga teacher who already leads a naked yoga class. If there isn't one in your area, you might check advertisements on Craigslist or advertise there yourself. Be careful with such classifieds, however, for they often attract people who are looking for sexual encounters rather than actually practicing yoga.

Other yoga teachers in your area who don't offer nude yoga classes already may be open to one-to-one naked yoga private sessions, but don't expect them to shed their clothes (although some may be willing). Remember, this experience isn't about seeing others free of clothing, it's about setting yourself free and coming into the uninhibited experience of your own body.

Group naked yoga classes

Whether straight or gay, male or female, group nude yoga classes are highly recommended.

Though it's a fairly easy thing to practice nude yoga in the privacy of your own home, it's an entirely different thing to get naked in front of a dozen or more strangers.

Again, it can be liberating, allowing you to let your guard down and stop judging yourself and others by the surface layer. Rather, you feel a part of a close community, sharing deeply.

A quick Internet search will show you the nude yoga classes near you. If there aren't any, you might look on Craigslist or Meetup.org for other people interested in naked yoga classes. If you can get a few people t! ogether, you are more likely to convince a yoga teacher to conduct a clothes-free or clothing-optional class.

Walking Meditation Is Meditation In Action

Posted: 04 Jan 2012 12:00 AM PST

Article by Sarah Thomas

It isn't always necessary to sit in silence with crossed legs in order to meditate or benefit from the meditation. Walking meditation is an excellent example of this. Walking meditation requires the use of focus much in the same way as other types of meditation. The difference is that the focus is placed upon the walking experience.

With walking meditation therefore, we are mindful of the experience of walking; the movement of our legs, the movement of our arms. We focus upon the rhythmic motions of walking. Walking meditation also differs from traditional meditation in that we are aware of and participating in our surroundings. Whereas with the usual types of meditation, one withdraws into silence and closes the eyes. Obviously we can't do that with walking meditation because we need the eyes open to see where we are going and to watch for dangers and obstacles. So while we are focusing on the rhythm of our walking movement, we are also aware of the sights, sounds, and sensations around us.

It is actually easier for many people to focus and meditate in this environment, and therefore are more successful with walking meditation than with the more traditional sitting forms of meditation. It is easier to be aware of and focus upon your body while it is in motion; the experience can be powerful and a source of deep enjoyment.

A few different types of walking meditation have evolved; however walking outdoors is the most common. To give walking meditation a try, find an open space like a park or empty parking lot where you can walk safely for about 20 minutes without the worry of encountering traffic or crossing busy streets.

How to do walking meditation

Once you have selected the ideal location for your walking meditation, follow the guidelines below:

Begin by Standing

Begin to focus upon your body with the simple act of standing. Notice how your body feels and be aware of the constant little adjustments your body makes in order to maintain balance. Feel the ! weight o f your body pressing through your feet and onto the earth.

Walk and Focus

Once you have placed your full awareness onto your body, begin the walk. Walk with your usual stride and pace, not too hurriedly. There is no need to try and change the way you walk, all you need to do is be aware of your body walking. Keep your focus upon your body and feel it moving. Be aware of your feet as one raises and then the other. Become aware of all the tiny little sensations in your body from the feeling of your feet inside of the shoes, to your knee as it bends to lift your leg. Stay relaxed, relax your eyes and just let the scenery flow past you. Your goal is to be relaxed and bring your focus onto your body.

Become Aware of Feelings

Once you are fully aware of your body, switch your focus onto the feelings or sensations that pass through your body; not necessarily emotional problems, but rather the overall tone of your feeling of the moment. Are you happy? Bored? In a hurry? Pass no judgment on the feeling and don't analyze it. Your goal is to just become aware of it and then move your awareness on.

Balance the Inner and Outer

Alternate your awareness between the inner, your feelings, and the outer, your body. Play with the awareness, and focus upon them in equal balance. When you are able to do this, your mind reaches a state of stillness and clarity. Your mind becomes calm. Your goal is to balance your awareness of the inner with the outer.

End by Standing

After you have completed the above steps and brought your awareness into a balance of the inner and outer, bring your body to a natural stop and once again experience yourself standing. Bring your awareness to the feelings in your body as you stand in place. When you are ready, bring the walking meditation to a close.

Selecting the appropriate location for your walking meditation will be an important consideration as you can imagine. It is not necessary to find a place of solitude, but you do need to find a lo! cation w here you will be safe if your full awareness is not upon the environment around you.

Beginner Yoga: Yoga At Home

Yoga

Article by Ashley

Beginning Yoga can be an important step in improving your physical and emotional health. Yoga's benefits include greater emotional equanimity and physical stamina as well as amelioration of common health concerns such as insomnia and high blood pressure. Yoga is also effective in combating stress and its negative effects on the body.

Studio yoga used to be the only way for a beginning yoga practitioner to experience the benefits of yoga. More and more, however, online yoga is becoming an appropriate option. It fits our busy lifestyles and can accommodate our needs outside of the yoga studio. Many beginners sense that there is more to yoga than a 1-hour class once a week; yoga is a way of life that can and should be practiced at home, according to the need of the yoga practitioner, not the yoga studio.

Practicing yoga at home, you can set your own atmosphere and make things exactly the way you like them. Volume of music and instruction are up to you, as is room temperature and the choice whether or not to use incense. In practical terms, there are many things you can do to improve your yoga practice at home.

Even within the comfort of our own home you should prepare just as if you were at a studio. Lay a mat out on the floor (or use a large beach towel if you do not have a yoga mat), and place a hand towel and water bottle within arm's reach so you do not need to get up during your practice.

Also, there are a few other things to consider. If you are practicing online yoga, set the sound of your computer at a soft level that you can hear comfortably from the mat. Close applications on your computer that make unexpected noises, like email programs that chime when new mail comes in. Turn down the lights to a comfortable level, especially for an evening practice, and if you can, turn off the ringer on your phone. The goal is to eliminate distractions that would pull you out of your state of relaxation.

Possibly the most important choice, however, can be the choice of yoga! instruc tion. There are many different styles of yoga and you should never feel bad about wanting to try a different kind of yoga. Often a good place to start is a guided yoga class where a yogi can talk you through the most common yoga asanas and get comfortable with the basic flow of a yoga class. It is also extremely important to choose an appropriate difficulty level for your level of yoga experience; any yoga provider who claims their classes are one-size-fits all is missing something. Even if there is a great yoga studio in your area, if their beginner classes do not coincide with your schedule or just do not feel right, it is time to look elsewhere.

For many yoga beginners, online yoga is appealing because it is less expensive and more private than a yoga studio. Also, it is more flexible as to the length of class, difficulty level and time of day of your practice. To enhance your online yoga experience, choose a website that will allow you to customize the length and difficulty level for your class.. This will provide more variety to your online yoga experience, since unlike a DVD you willalways get a different class.

Yoga is a practice that should feel good to you and should be a comfortable and energy-enriching experience. You should never experience pain when practicing yoga, and you should always respect your body's wisdom--if something hurts, stop or back off the pose until you reach a place where the pose feels comfortable and easy. Everyone's body is different, and before beginning your yoga practice, it is important to discuss any health concerns with your physician, to make sure it is safe for you to begin an exercise regime.

With a little preparation, yoga at home can be even more relaxing than in a studio; less expensive, more private and certainly less crowded. Give yourself license to be yourself and focus on your health and your wellbeing. Try yoga today!

Starting To Meditate

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 09:00 PM PST

Article by Mike Garrett

If you are interested in beginning to mediation, you may wish to first try "speed meditation" to get used to the techniques and practices. Since this only takes 15 to 20 minutes every day, you'll find it very easy to begin the process, even if you find little time in your schedule for relaxing activities. Speed meditation has many advantages including:

* Healing from physical pain* Unlocking creativity* Developing religious beliefs* Feeling a sense of serenity* Increasing clarity of the world, mentally and with your senses

You may wish to consult an expert or take a class to begin the lifelong process of meditation, but if this does not fit within your busy schedule, don't be afraid to start meditation on your own with the aid of teaching materials.

Release yourself from expectations--you will find meditation challenging at first and may not see results for a period of time. However, after a few weeks of regular meditation, you should feel calmer and happier with life overall. The first step to learning to meditation, therefore, is setting aside time every day for the practice, even if it is a very short time. Many people prefer meditation at the start of the day or directly before bedtime.

Find a comfortable place for meditation. You should be relaxed, but avoid meditating in bed or lying down if you are tired, the temptation to drop off to sleep can be overwhelming! Also be sure to take care of your body before meditation. It is unproductive to meditate when you are hungry, cold/hot, sexually aroused, or in need of using the restroom, as these things will simply distract you from your goal.

Eliminate other distractions as well--block outside noise from your meditation space by closing the windows, turning off your pager and cell phone, and asking your family for a few minutes alone. Distractions are bound to occur, but begin your session with as few as possible.

To bring your meditation to a close, do not use startling alarms or other sounds. Instead, base yo! ur medit ation time on your inner feelings. When you feel as though your time is up, open your eyes and check the clock. You may wish to continue, but if you feel as though you have all the inner peace you can get for one day, move on with your life--do not force yourself to meditate.

If you're on a schedule and worried about being late for your next appointment, you can use a simple or relaxing sound to break you from your meditation on time. For example, place a radio alarm under a pillow or have a family member softly knock on the door after a certain period of time.

Meditation is a practice that anyone, no matter how young or old, can enjoy. Whether you are meditating for religious reasons or simply want to help release some stress from you life, meditation is a practice you can easily learn with or without a teacher. The trick is to fit it in around your schedule and you'll find that it won't take up time during your day that you need for other things.

Guided Meditation Online - Can We Trust The Internet?

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 07:02 PM PST

Article by Susan Masters

The Internet is, without any doubt, the greatest invention of the millennium. No one can deny the power of this technological medium to bring people together, to create bonds, to stimulate minds, to increase our informational backgrounds, or to teach us different things, such as the guided meditation online. Yes, indeed... This is possible, even though it seems hard to believe. Internet thus proves to be not only a direct source of entertainment but, most importantly a means of developing our inner selves through meditation.

What Does Guided Meditation Online Mean?

We all know that the Internet in not only instructional, but also a perfect means of discovering new methods that can help us learn the meditation techniques. This is made possible by the guided meditation online that refers to all the information and the tips that the specialists in teaching meditation provide for all the users. It might sound quite strange, but you can learn how to meditate only by surfing on the Internet.

The Internet is one of the most helpful sources when it comes finding as much information as possible. Even though there is a wide and complex range of books on yoga and other meditation practices, the Internet can offer the same thing: plenty of web pages that belong to specialists in the field. They wish to enlarge this community of people who seek help and refuge in meditation. This is, after all, what the guided meditation online is all about.

Which Are the Advantages of the Guided Meditation Online?

Needles to say more, the Internet is a force that promotes and develops. Although meditation is an abstract practice that cannot really be defined in words, there are several tips and clues that the Internet provides concerning the methods that can be used in order to better reach that state of relaxation that leads to meditation. One of the most important attributes of the guided meditation online is that it creates a direct connection between the specialist in meditation techniques ! and all those users who present a true interest in meditation and who really wish to meditate in a useful manner.

Are There Any Disadvantages Related to the Guided Meditation Online?

Unfortunately, when considering using of Internet as a source of information on meditation techniques, there are some flaws that must be known. In the first place, not all sources are truly and completely reliable. This happens because there are people who have not conducted any kind of research on the topic. But, of course, there is no risk taken in trying out all the methods that appear on the Internet. The only problem here is that some practices might be a waste of your time, and, probably, this is not what you need.

In the second place, not all the practices that appear on the Internet are instructional or useful. Some of them are worthless, but don't discourage yourself. You do have great chances of finding some really good advice as long as you can guess which information you can select from the multitude of data that appears on the web pages. You do have to realize that guided meditation online can be misleading, but there are, in fact, slim chances for you to find any harmful advice or tips.

Every year, millions of people make New Year resolutions to improve their physical and mental health, lose weight, get rid of depression and loneliness, put to an end panic and anxiety attacks, find a soul mate and a life partner, start a new business, increase their income to six or seven figures, or just live more balanced lives. However, every year millions of these resolutions are never met. PhysioEmoDynamics Institute offers Emotional Fitness private sessions and group classes to put an end to the way fears, doubts and repressed emotion rule our lives and cause acts of violence that we impose on ourselves (in form of self-judgments and self-punishment, sabotaging our happiness), as well as onto others, which manifests itself in resentment, verbal abuse and often – physical violence.

Serial entrepreneur Olga Kostrova, innovator in the area of information as well as human technologies, for the last 5 years has being offering pro bono work serving those who are depressed and in need of emotional support, refining her PhysioEmoDynamics System. Now in order to popularize her findings she travels internationally; to make this service widely available Emotional Fitness private sessions are offered at affordable prices and held on clients' location.

Emotional Fitness parties are the solution for scaling PhysioEmoDynamics System to make it affordable, and often free for those who need emotional recovery and maintenance the most.

Emotional Fitness parties were seeded in Silicon Valley where, as Olga believes, information technologies must meet human technologies. With support of Jan Hutchins, former mayor of Los Gatos and San Francisco Bay Area TV anchor, Emotional Fitness parties have a place among the other transformational arts practiced at his Yoga Center Of Los Gatos. Every 2nd Saturday of the month guests can attend these unique events and experience profound emotional healing.

"I'm thrilled to have Olga and her technologies become a part of the Center," says Jan Hutchins. "Doing her work broke a loop of fearful thoughts in my head. I love the concept of Emotional Fitness celebrations and can't wait to attend. Yoga is the science of living and we embrace all techniques that enhance life and help us live consciously in community."

Emotional Fitness parties that are designed accordingly to PhysioEmoDynamics System's framework, now are also hosted by Kostrova at various private residences across Canada and USA.

During Olga's PhysioEmoDynamics private sessions, as well as Emotional Fitness parties, there are four major steps in the process of permanently releasing the stored tension and energetic blockages:
  1. Identification of emotional blockages through cognitive exercises, muscle testing and probing acupressure points.
  2. Intensification of emotions through breath exercises and specific physical movements.
  3. Liberation of emotional blockages through various forms of dynamic meditation and activation of acupressure points.
  4. Integration of new emotional states with various techniques that employ visual, audio and kinesthetic components added to exercises.
PhysioEmoDynamics (PED) uses a blend of physical, emotional, energetic, and cognitive healing techniques to intuitively and rapidly resolve the root cause of pain, suffering, and illness. The PhysioEmoDynamics Method does this by activating and enhancing our own minds' natural self-healing abilities to untangle self-defeating neural clusters and re-architect mental structures.

"My vocation is to set humanity free – free from the mind. This might be unattainable dream, but that's the dream worth dreaming," says Olga.

Article by Trevor John

Some people prefer to meditate silently without any music but there are others who prefer to meditate with music. Different people like different music to meditate by. Some like to have music playing in the background while they meditate while others like the form of meditation that involves making music to meditate by.

Meditation is a simple and easy art and even children can easily practice it. With music to meditate by meditation can be made even more interesting for children. You get a choice of meditation music that is especially meant for children.

Whatever form of meditation you choose, it is important to remember that music to meditate by should be simple, calm, soothing and peaceful. It should induce feelings of inner peace and help you to focus. Loud music to meditate by is destructive and unproductive. It is distracting and creates feelings of chaos. The most popular musical instruments associated with meditation include the sitar, flute, Tibetan singing bow and the tambora.

While some people use music to meditate by, there are many musicians who use meditation to calm themselves and to stay focused before any major performance. If you are using music as a means of meditation, you should try and stop doing everything else and just focus on the music in order to get the full benefits of the music. It also helps you to enjoy the music more.

If you are looking for music to meditate by, there are plenty on online websites that offer different kinds of meditation music that you can buy. Some websites allow you to listen to a sample of the music so you can decide if that is what you are looking for. There are even a few websites that offer free mp3 downloads of music to meditate by. Seven Reasons to Choose Yoga For a Better Body and a Calmer Mind

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 05:00 PM PST

Article by Craig Perkins

Yoga has been around for centuries. Embraced equally by film stars, rock stars, high powered CEOs and New Age gurus, yoga's stress-relieving, strength-building, low impact poses appeal to a wide range of individuals and body shapes. Even beginners can see and feel a difference after just a few short weeks of practice. All arguments aside, yoga works. So why haven't you tried it? Here are seven really good reasons why you should:

7.) Symptom Relief - Several scientific studies have proven that yoga practice can greatly reduce the frequency and duration of asthma attacks, as well as the amount of medication needed to control or prevent attacks. Yogic breathing, pranayama, helps to strengthen the lungs and build breath control while back-bending poses open the chest and help increase air flow. Carpal tunnel syndrome can be alleviated with certain yoga poses. The lengthening and strengthening of the tendons offered in many yoga poses aids in relieving the pain, and in restoring the grip. The slow, low-impact nature of yoga exercise lends itself perfectly to arthritis sufferers. Joint pain and swelling can be reduced from the gentle exercise and from the stress relief granted tight, tensed muscles. The stress relieving nature of yoga has been shown to reduce the severity and frequency of headaches for migraine sufferers, as well.

6.) Disease Prevention – The stress relief offered through yoga practice can reduce the risk of heart disease, the number one killer of women in the US and Canada. Of further interest to women is yoga's ability to strengthen and build bone density, preventing osteoporosis. It's believed that yoga may reduce cortisol, and thereby aid in keeping calcium in your bones. The meditative nature of yoga can help raise levels of GABA in the brain, preventing the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Lastly, yoga has been known to stimulate the pancreas in its production of insulin, lowering blood sugar levels and helping in the treatment of Type II diabetes.

5.) Good F! orm of E xercise – Not all forms of exercise are good for all of you. Yoga is low impact, providing a safer way to stretch and strengthen. Yoga is non-competitive, allowing you a stress-free, introspective work-out. Yoga can be practiced indoors or out, so that it fits in with all climates and lifestyles. Beneficial yoga practice can be completed in as little as 10 minutes a day, making it the ideal exercise routine for today's busy, on-the-go world. Yoga builds balanced muscle tone, strengthens the body's core, and improves dexterity, hand-eye coordination and reaction time. It has also been clinically proven to increase joint range of motion and flexibility.

4.) Improved Body Chemistry – Yoga can have drastically good effects on your body's inner workings. The increase in movement and blood flow offered in yoga practice can lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood stream. It is believed that yoga actually increases the amount of red blood cells in your blood, providing better oxygenation of the body, as well as increasing energy and reducing the risks of anemia. The lymphatic and endocrine systems also get a boost from yoga. The lymphatic system boosts immunity and raises your body's disease fighting ability, while the endocrine system regulates hormones, and through yoga, both systems help increase the overall health and balance of your body.

3.) The Inner You – Much has been made of yoga's effects on the psychological and emotional health of its practitioners. Yoga reduces stress through its slow movements and controlled breathing. It elevates and regulates your mood with its mind-body consciousness, its ability to improve your health overall, and its introspective nature. The attention required in yoga causes one to focus inwardly, reducing stress and anxiety, building a sense of calmness, alertness and even improving your memory.

2.) The Overall Inner You – Let's recap a bit here. Yoga reduces stress, which lowers blood pressure. It stimulates your endocrine system, balan! cing hor mone levels and lowering blood sugar. It helps increase the overall functioning and health of your circulatory and respiratory system. It lowers your heart rate. It raises your tolerance to pain. It relives certain chronic problems. It improves brain chemistry. Your internal organs receive a "yoga massage," improving their functioning and disease fighting abilities. Your gastrointestinal health improves. Overall, there isn't a body system not impacted positively by regular yoga practice.

1.) The Outer You – After examining all the things that yoga can do for the inside of you, let's see what yoga can do for you that you can actually see. Yoga can reduce the signs of aging through its detoxification of the body. Increased blood flow and oxygenation can also improve skin tone and color. Yoga helps to induce better sleep, improving overall health, awareness and skin and muscle tone. Yoga poses build strength, lengthen muscles and get the body moving, all of which cause a reduction in weight, prevent cellulite from forming and improve posture. Lastly, yoga can boost your energy, and not just your everyday, running hither and thither and yon type energy. Yoga has been proven to improve your energy and performance in the bedroom, as well. You look better, you feel better, your body is more in tune with itself and you with it - all of which leads to an increased confidence that can't be kept all to yourself.

Yoga may not be the cure of all ills, but it certainly can improve many. Its an overall workout inside as well as outside that shows in your face, your eyes, the way you stand, the way you move, the way you live. What are you waiting for? Give yoga a try today!

Three Yoga Techniques to Suit your Exquisite Preference

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 03:00 PM PST

Article by Cindy Heller

Many people practicing yoga techniques had reached to the point where they are seeking more advanced yoga exercises. Most yoga sessions focus on the meditation and breathing exercises. These basic yoga techniques give emphasis on providing relaxation and flexibility to the body in order to attain beneficial health effects. There are other yoga techniques which exceeds the norm of the commonly used yoga postures namely Ashtanga yoga, Bikram Yoga and Kundalini yoga. The asana poses involved in these yoga practices require proper concentration and dedication to achieve mastery of the involved yoga techniques.

Ashtanga Yoga - Muscle Building Yoga Technique

This yoga technique is much different from other forms of yoga exercises. The asana postures to be performed in this yoga exercise focuses on enhancing the strength and endurance of the practitioner's body. The Ashtanga yoga technique is often restricted to those with proficient body status, due to the intensity involved in performing the difficult poses on this exercise. The yoga sessions for this yoga technique are often subjected to a fast pace of exercise procedures which would perfectly suit those people who are into building up their body's strength and stamina.

The level of difficulty offered by the Ashtanga yoga asana postures gave it the name "athlete's yoga". The yoga techniques to be performed in this type of exercise require hard work, constant practice and great concentration. This is a good choice for people who are physically fit.

Bikram Yoga - Heating while Bending Yoga Technique

This 90-minute yoga session involves flexing your body while inside a sweltering room. The training room for this yoga technique is preheated to at most 105 degree Fahrenheit and 40 percent humidity. For those people who are interested on this extraordinary yoga experience, preparation is very crucial to survive this yoga technique. Students of Bikram yoga sessions should follow important reminders before starting the yoga exe! rcises. Due to the heated environment, this yoga technique regulates breathing and releases the body's fluids at faster rate compared to other yoga techniques. The extreme temperature applied with the constricting movements benefits the body's blood flow. This yoga technique is advisable to those who can endure heat while performing the asana postures.

Kundalini Yoga - Releasing Inner Body's Potential Yoga Technique

The postures involved in this yoga technique excite the endocrine and nervous system of the body. This is a very interesting type of yoga exercise since it gives serenity and ecstasy to the body if mastered. Kundalini yoga techniques compose of unique poses, meditation and chanting. The chanting is considered as the most crucial part of this yoga exercise. The chanting provides the practitioner to experience inner peace and at the same time enhancing the body's senses. Most Kundalini yoga sessions require the assistance of a professional guru. This yoga technique is an excellent choice for those who want to experience the soothing effect of concentrated meditation.

There Are Meditation Techniques for All Different Environments

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 02:07 PM PST

Article by Scott Byers

Some people have a good sense of focus and concentration. They can control and focus their mind no matter what is happening around them. On the other side, there are some people who will always seem disturbed. Their judgment and quality of work is affected because they can hardly concentrate. These type of people find meditation to be a good aid. During meditation, they can create mental space and achieve a certain degree of enlightenment.

Because people are so individual, meditation has a variety of different effects. Factors such as mood, individuality, and character can affect their meditation results. When a person can not understand himself, his confusion is reflected to his actions. Thus, contemplation is needed to achieve an enlightened consciousness.

The essentials of meditation include a quite space for reflection, a mantra to be recited, and total concentration. Although sitting is considered the best basic form of meditating, there are other ways to achieve the process. After you become familiar with the practice, you can create other forms of meditation. When you have set your mind for meditation, it will be easier to stay well tuned. The spiritual essence and mental awareness can be combined with the mental and physical flow of life.

When meditation becomes part of your normal routine, you will always find time to meditate. It is only natural that you will always be in search of that blissful state only reached during moments of meditation.

What should you do if you can not find an area that is conducive of meditation? Even when your environment doesn't lend itself easily to deep thought, it is possible to focus and concentrate. You can place your mind into the state of meditation by focusing on an area in the room, your own breathing, or a small object. Tricky colors and relaxing music can help achieve meditation and extend such practice beyond the period of meditation.

Athletes, or anyone involved in active pursuits, must be grounded and focus on th! eir skil ls or tasks. Contact with their higher consciousness can give them more physical ability. One famous female boxer disclosed that because of the violence of her profession, she always meditates and chants. To find internal peace, she formatted her own way of leaving the atmosphere of the gym. She listens to the sound the speed bag makes when she hits it in a certain way. The one way blow has a distinct sound, and it varies with the impact of the glove. Keeping her eyes closed and meditating on the sound of the speed bag was all that was necessary for her to meditate.

If a basketball player employs meditation at the free-throw line, he can transcend the noise of the crowd and the pressure of the play. He can allow himself to enter a loosely meditative state and handle the pressures and stresses that come from around him.

Use creativity when modifying your way of meditation. Step outside of your box, and cause your imagination to work.

SPIRITUAL MEDITATIONS - ESSENTIAL TIPS

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 01:00 PM PST

Article by Keith McGregor

We always wonder if we are meditating correctly when we are following guided meditations . Sometimes we feel it is not working because we hear noises from outside and around us. What we don't realise is on a normal day our brain is working so fast that it does not even notice those noises, like the dog barking across the road; but when you are meditating you are making your mind and thoughts slow down so your mind does take notice of the usual noises that you normally suppress. As your spiritual growth increases so you learn to ignore the noises. Just like all things in life, the more you do it the better you will get. Think of it as " meditation exercises ". Gym workout for the mind.

Here are some more tips for you to keep in mind:

Always sit up straight when following a spiritual development meditation.

The idea is to allow your body to relax completely yet keeping your mind awake. If you meditate lying down, it is quite likely you may fall asleep and you will not gain any active spiritual development. Also it is difficult to "ground" and protect yourself.

Be comfortable when doing meditation exercises.

Again the idea is to let your BODY go to sleep and let your mind enter into its psychic growth. Uncomfortable clothes or shoes keep irritating the body so you cannot relax enough!

Try to find a warm place to meditate.

If your body is working overtime trying to keep your temperature up, it will not be able to relax.

Do not cross your legs, ankles or arms.

This inhibits the flow of energy around in and out of your chakras and around your body. The pressure of one limb touching another also reminds the body to stay alert. Also, crossing your limbs stops the flow of blood around the body.

When meditating, don't try too hard!

Many people see wonderful pictures in the mind whilst others struggle to see anything. "Go with the flow", just relax. If at first you don't succeed, keep trying and you will soon see clear images. So! me peopl e start by seeing only colours, others see pictures straight away. With practise the pictures will improve.

Do not use these meditations to help you fall asleep.

These meditations are specifically designed for spiritual growth and not for stress relief and relaxation. They will make you feel good after you have meditated and you may wish to meditate before going to bed to put you in a more relaxed frame of mind.

If you feel drowsy or "spaced-out" after meditating.

You have not grounded or earthed yourself properly. You should have had your feet firmly on the floor when meditating. To correct the problem visualise roots growing out of the bottom of your feet going deep down into the ground. When you start to walk, visualise the roots staying in the ground and breaking off with each step you take.

Breathing during your guided meditation is essential

When you start your spiritual meditation you must breathe slightly deeper than normal and then allow normal breath all the way through you meditation. We want to be sure we have loads of oxygen in our blood to allow our brain to function at its highest vibration.

Spiritual growth meditations are specially designed to link you closer to spirit by increasing your vibration. Just this, in itself, is a huge healing process because we increase our vibration and shake off old stubborn emotions and energy blockages in our body's energy systems. Meditate! It is fun and it gives your brain a vacation!

Meditation: Why Bother?

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 12:04 PM PST

Article by Jon Hansen

One of the first things I ask my clients to do is to create a habit of regular meditation. If they're already practicing, I ask them to extend the duration of their meditation, or to let go of techniques they may be using and try something that feels more natural.

Very few clients ask me why I make this request. Sometimes I explain anyway, but I suspect that most people instinctively know that meditation is good for them. Just as the body craves water when it's thirsty, so the spirit craves silence and stillness.

Nonetheless, it's powerful to know why you're meditating. And although there are many benefits that have been described in many places - the popular press, medical journals, websites, books - and although those benefits are certainly pleasant and useful side effects that I'm happy my clients will enjoy, that's not why I recommend it.

The way you experience the world affects how you feel about yourself and your life.

Are you an optimist, or a pessimist? The relative fullness of your life's glass has gone beyond being a cute way of asking that question to become an annoying cliche. No one really wants to say they're a half-empty person. Instead, you're more likely to call yourself a realist, no matter which camp you're in.

When it comes down to it, though, no matter how you view your place in the world, as long as you're swept from moment to moment on the currents of your thoughts and feelings, you're stuck.

You're stuck, because who you believe you are is entwined with what you think and how you feel. You're at the mercy of the current, and if it suddenly dives into whitewater, you're going with it whether you want to or not.

Instead, you can learn to stand on the shore and observe your thoughts and feelings, observe how your body reacts to those thoughts and feelings. From that vantage point, you can see the beauty of the whitewater without getting drowned in it. You can enjoy the slower, more peaceful currents without worrying about where they! 're goin g - or not going. You can watch the crashing waterfall without getting wrapped up in the drama.

Meditation, sitting in silence and stillness, is the opportunity for your consciousness to learn to observe your thoughts and feelings from the shore instead of swimming in the rapids. As you gain confidence in meditation, as you cultivate your observer, you will find it becoming part of your life, allowing you to be increasingly more objective about your experience. You'll stop getting caught up in the drama.

From the shore, from the place of quiet objective observation, you'll see things about yourself and about the situations of your life that will surprise, intrigue, and delight you. From this place of quiet, you'll find intelligence, wisdom, and possibly even awakening.

It starts with meditation. It's a powerfully effective way to find the silence, to develop the observing consciousness. And that's why I practice meditation, and have for 35 years, and why I ask my clients to practice.

Here are a few guidelines for you. If you're already meditating, keep it up! and if these ideas are a little different from your current approach, I invite you to give them a try.

Let Go of TechniqueThere are a lot of techniques being taught by a lot of people. (I cringe at the ads I see in magazines and online to "Learn Instant Deep Meditation!" There are no end runs in meditation or in life.)

Techniques are like training wheels on a bicycle. They can be useful in the beginning, but in the end if you never let go, you're limited in where you can ride. If you're using techniques (for example, following the breath, focusing on a particular area of your body, or chanting a mantra), try letting go of the technique after the first few moments of your meditation. Just let go and see what happens. Meditation is not about doing it "well" or entering some higher, so-called altered state; it's about being with your experience in the moment.

Resistance is FutileInstead of expec! ting a s pecific experience or result, simply recognize that wherever your experience goes, it's ok. If your mind wanders, that's ok. If you fall asleep, obviously your body needed rest more than your spirit needed stillness. If your nose itches, scratch it.

Be curious; don't resist; just listen. Whatever happens, notice it and leave it alone. Don't get involved, don't judge, don't push away. Allow everything to be exactly as it is, without fighting it or thinking it's "wrong" or "should" be different. This is the awakening of your observer. Allow your consciousness to notice what's happening without becoming involved in it. (And if it does get involved - guess what? It's ok!)

Meditate LongerWhatever your current meditation time is, see what it would be like if you meditated longer. Unless you're already meditating for an hour or more, the potential for expanding your ongoing sense of spaciousness and presence will exponentially increase with longer meditations. I know it's hard to find time to "sit and do nothing," and I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't know how profoundly it can change your life.

So try to find more time, even if it's just another five minutes. Take extra time when you can; nothing says your meditation has to be consistent from day to day.

Meditation is a vacation for your heart, spirit, Self. Enjoy it!

"You can observe a lot just by watching." Yogi Berra, American major league baseball player and coach, 1925 -

Zen Driving Meditation Technique

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 10:00 AM PST

Article by Anmol Mehta

Is the rat race eating into your spiritual evolution? Are you finding less time to do your meditation, yoga and other spiritual practices? Never fear Zen driving meditation is here.

Unfortunately for many of us, work, family, education and more work seems to be consuming our lives. The worst part of this hectic life-style is that the one aspect which should not suffer, does. Our spiritual growth. In this article I will present you with a terrific meditation technique that you can do while driving or while in transit. This should, hopefully, help you in getting your spiritual work back on track and enjoying the marvelous benefits that such work bestows.

In America we drive a lot, and even those who don't drive a lot, often take trains and buses as part of their daily life. This "idle" time presents us with a great opportunity to get in some meditation work and there are many meditations that can conveniently be done during this time.

An obvious warning of course is that please DO NOT practice this meditation if it distracts you in any way from your driving.

Zen meditation techniques all have their roots in mindfulness or being in the moment. This meditation technique is no different and is also designed to help you come into the "here and now" as much as possible. Below is a step by step guide of how to practice this meditation. It is given assuming you are driving, but can easily be extrapolated to other modes of transportation.

Meditation Tip: Driving Zen Meditation Technique

- Start the meditation by taking 5 long deep slow breaths. This will relax you.

- Now, bring your attention to your breathing and just observe its flow without manipulating it in any way. Meditate on it's physical characteristic as closely as you can. Feeling it's temperature, texture, depth etc. Continue this meditation for 1-5 minutes. This will settle your mind down.

- Now begins the heart of this meditation. Begin to watch the scenery go by as you drive with an unfocused, ! holistic gaze. In other words, let your vision relax, incorporate the periphery and without any point of focus just observe the world as you journey through it. Just observe the trees, sky, clouds, houses, cars as they pass by. Just be empty within and allow the world to pass through you. That's it.

- To add another component to this meditation technique, whenever you come to a stop return your attention to your breath and then when moving, meditate once more on the scenery.

- If at any time driving requires your focused attention please stop the meditation and pay attention to your driving.

Commentary on Driving Zen Meditation Technique

This meditation technique has the ability to reveal to you the True Nature of Reality. Etched in my mind are occasions where the absolute perfection of life and the moment, were fully realized while practicing this technique. This meditation was one that just came to me naturally and I am happy to share it with all of you.

Buying a Yoga Mat

Posted: 03 Jan 2012 09:03 AM PST

Article by Paul Wells

Tips on buying a yoga mat

Anybody who wants to develop a good posture, become fit and mentally relaxed should try to learn yoga. The principles of yoga are based on some Indian philosophies and beliefs mainly because the discipline started and developed in the ancient world of India.

Yoga is aptly called as such because the word refers to the union of the physical with the mental. Yoga is actually a unification of the body, the mind and the spiritual aspects of man. This is achieved through the execution of the asana or the yoga poses.

While people would be quick to look at yoga only in terms of the difficult poses, the asana is not really everything there is to yoga. The different poses only make up one of the eight types or yoga disciplines. And while the asana can be difficult to execute especially for people who are new to yoga, it can be learned and perfected in due time and with proper determination.

Yoga may be thought of as merely a series of postures guaranteed to stretch the limbs of a person but the discipline of yoga is more addressed to the mental capacity and power of the person. The asana helps in achieving relaxation but it is really mind power that wins in the end.

A person who practices yoga will have more power to achieve a peaceful existence through the unification of his body, soul and mind. He can achieve this not only through the poses but also through proper breathing methods.

People who witness yoga exercises have a good laugh especially when they hear yoga chants. However, this is also among the methods used by those who practice yoga to achieve a higher level of concentration. But since yoga basically makes use of the different poses to achieve union of the body, mind and spirit, the follower should always arm himself with a yoga mat.

A yoga mat is in fact one of the very basic and most important equipment that a person practicing yoga should invest in. Some poses can be very challenging to the physique that a person needs the ! mat to s erve as cushion and protection against impact.

The poses can make a yoga followed sweat especially if he is into Bikram or hot yoga so it is very important to keep himself in check against slips occurring from too much sweating.

Having a yoga mat will also create a sense of space between the people doing the yoga poses. Yoga can be done anywhere and no matter if the poses are being done in the gym or elsewhere, a person has to have his own yoga mat for purposes of safety, hygiene and to mark his spot.

So how does one get a yoga mat? Will any mat do or doe sit have to be a specially-made mat for yoga? There are different types of yoga mats depending of course on the type of yoga the person is practicing.

The Ashtanga mat are very good not only for those doing Ashtanga yoga but also for those who are into hot yoga because these type of mats are made of cotton and are characterized by tractions that can control sweat and moisture.

People who do yoga anywhere they go should invest in a travel mat for yoga as these are very light and can easily fit inside their luggage. To those who want to buy only one mat for all purposes then try the universal mat which also comes in a deluxe quality.

Those who have been doing yoga poses for a long time however vouch for utopian mats which they say are every resilient and can carry the weight of any person no matter what yoga pose he is attempting to perfect.

Beginners can invest in a mat that is less expensive but can be already used for their yoga poses. Investing in a good yoga mat is advisable though because they can be used not only for the yoga poses but also for meditation.

Whatever type of yoga mat a person has, he should make sure these are regularly cleaned with water and soap. It must also be dried either by using towel or air to keep it odor-free.http://www.books4knowledge.co.uk/yoga-at-home-4256-p.asp
