You have insomnia: you can't get to sleep easily, and when you do and you wake up, you can't get back to sleep. Why not try Yoga for insomnia? Yoga can help relax you enough to let you sleep. When incorporated into your daily routines, you will notice that you get more sleep. Results like that count, especially when your insomnia is stress related. You may have to do some research, as there are different schools or types of Yoga. You can start by Googling up Yoga online, to read more about this. Meditation must not be thought of as something that is only done in a physically rigid state, far removed from the world of work and play. The goal is to become meditative continuously, so that your very being becomes cosmically conscious permanently and irrevocably. When you stand up and sit down during meditation sessions, feel the inner flow of meditation continue. Observe that your body is moving, but your basic existential identity remains the same. When one meditates, do it for a short time; but do it again and again and again. The whole point is to develop a habit of meditation. If one meditates at first for too long, the mind just becomes more and more agitated and difficult to control. Yoga has an effect on the whole person,combining the physical, mental and spiritual sides. The word 'yoga' is derived from a Sanskrit word that means 'yoke' or 'union' and thus reflects on the practises of yoga being total in effect. For many hundreds of years in India, it was only a privileged few people, such as philosophers and other like-minded people with their disciples that followed the way of life that yoga dictated. The leaders were known as 'yogis' and it was they who taught their followers by passing on their accumulated knowledge. These small groups of people dwelt in caves or woods, or sometimes a yogi would live like a hermit. Yoga has had quite far reaching effects over many hundreds of years in India. The basics of yoga were defined by a yogi called Patanjali who lived about 300BC. He was a very well respected teacher and commanded great influence at that time and his classification is one that is used now. He established the fact of yoga being separated into eight different parts. The first two concern a person's lifestyle, which should be serene with the days spent in contemplation, study, maintaining cleanliness and living very simply and at peace with others. Anything that involves avarice or greed or is harmful to others has to be avoided. The third and fourth parts are concerned with physical matters and list a number of exercises that are designed to promote peace and infuse energy into both the mind and the body. The remaining four sections are concerned with the advancement of a person's soul or spirit and mental faculties by being able to isolate himself or herself from outside worries and normal life, contemplation and broadening mental faculties with the ultimate knowledge known as somadhi. Mentally, this is a complete change that gives final realisation of existence. Much more recently, yoga bec! ame avai lable in India to everyone, in complete contrast to centuries ago. Nowadays, the practice of yoga is not restricted to India alone, with millions of people worldwide being followers. There are five different types of yoga: raja, jnana, karma, bakti and hatha. It is this last system that is known in the west and it involves the use of exercises and positions. The other methods concentrate on matters, such as control over the mind, appreciation and intelligence or a morally correct way of life. These other methods are regarded as being of equal importance by the person completely committed to yoga as a way of life. Many people have little or no spiritual feeling. However, the basic belief in yoga is the importance of mental attitudes in establishing the physical from exercise. It is a belief in yoga that the body's essence of life, or prana, is contained in the breath. Through a change in the way of breathing there can be a beneficial effect on the general health. If a person is in a heightened, emotional condition, or similar state, this will have an effect on the breathing. Therefore, if the breathing is controlled or altered, this should promote joint feelings of peace or calm, both mentally and emotionally. There is a variety of exercises and each promotes different types of breathing, such as the rib cage, shoulder and diaphragm. Some of the movements and stances in use were originally devised from the observations of animals, since they appeared to be adept at relaxation and moved with minimum effort. These stances which are maintained for one two minutes, aim to increase freedom of movement and make the person aware of the various parts of the body and any stress that may be present. It is not intended that they be physically tiring or that the person should 'show off' in front of others. The aim is to concentrate on self knowledge. It is recommended to follow some simple rules when practising yoga. First use a fully qualified therapist and practise daily if at all possible. It is ! always b est that yoga is undertaken before mealtimes but if this is not possible then three hours must elapse after a large meal or one hour after a light meal. Comfortable clothes are essential and a folded blanket or thick rug should be placed on the ground as the base. Before commencing yoga have a bath or shower and repeat this afterwards to gain the maximum benefit. It is not advisable to do yoga if either the bowels or bladder are full. Should the person have been outside on a hot or sunny day it is not recommended that yoga is practised straight afterwards, as feelings of sickness or dizziness may occur. Yoga is believed to be of benefit to anyone, providing that they possess determination and patience. If a person has certain physical limitations then these must be taken into account with regard to their expectation but there is no age barrier. If you suffer from stress or disorder in your lives, teachers believe that you are in greater need of harmony and peace. Yoga was used in the main to encourage health in the physical and mental states and thereby act as a preventative therapy. Tension or stress was one of the main disorders for which it was used but nowadays it has been used for differing disorders hypertension, bronchitis, back pain, headaches, asthma, heart disorders, premenstrual tension and an acid stomach. Trials have also been conducted to assess its potential in treating some illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and depression experienced after childbirth. Since the effects of tension are often shown by the tightening and contraction of muscles, the stretching exercises that are performed in yoga are able to release it. Also, being aware of each muscle as it is stretched encourages the person to mentally lose any stress or problems with which they have been beset. Suppleness is developed by the exercises through the use of the bending and twisting actions. This will help to maintain healthy joints, particularly for those people who l! ead inac tive lives. There should be no strain felt and after practise some or all of them can be done in order. As mentioned previously, it is best to check with a qualified therapist if the person is an expectant mother, suffers from hypertension, is overweight or is having their monthly period. I have already mentioned that yoga has been used to treat some illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis and if a person has such a severe disorder, then a highly skilled and experienced therapist is essential. Since this form of yoga, known as therapeutic yoga, is new there is a limited number of suitably experienced therapists available. For those who wish to use yoga to maintain mental and physical health, joining a class with an instructor is perhaps the best way to proceed, so the exercises are performed correctly and any lapses in concentration can be corrected. These classes last usually in the region of an hour and are separated into sessions for beginners and those who are more proficient. Proficiency and progress are achieved by frequent practice, which can be done at home between lessons. Most doctors now regard yoga as a type of exercise that is of benefit, although a few will recommend that patients refer to yoga practitioners. However, if a specific disorder is to be treated, it is very important that the ailment should first be seen by a doctor. Here is a clear and concise list you can use when shopping for a style to learn or to evaluate the mediation practice you already have. 1. Only 20-25 minutes long. If some is good, more must be better, right? Wrong. It is much better to have short focused effective sessions that leave us both relaxed and energized. If we invest too much time, excuses to skip this time become more likely. And in the long run, we eventually stop meditating. It is okay for the advanced meditator to have longer sessions, but only if the entire session is productive. 2. Begin with relaxation and deep breathing. During your meditation you will eventually forget about your breathing and it will become slow and shallow as your become more relaxed. Beginning the meditation with imaging blowing out the stresses of the day combined with deep breaths out is a great way to relieve tension. Both the imagination and the deep breaths send the signal to our subconscious to slow down. 3. Music without words. Some teachers advocate silence or using mantras to reach a sort of trance state. In truth you can reach a much deeper and much more clear place by not having any words in your brain. With some practice, it is much easier to achieve this state if you have headphones on and are listening to music. The music provides a sort of "mental bubble gum" for your brain. It keeps your brain occupied so it doesn't feel the need to fill the silence with words. Also to prevent feeding the need of your brain to have words present, the music can't have any words. At least any words in a language you understand. Also the type of music; the beat, the style, etc, can create an emotional response in you making your meditation much more effective. Upbeat music can leave you energized. Slower relaxing music can take you to deeper states of relaxation. 4. Binaural audio and headphones.! L istening to music on headphones with embedded binaural beats of the proper frequency enhances meditation. The binaural beats will naturally start to slow your brainwaves down and cause the hemisphere of your brain to start to synchronize. Unfortunately this is only an advantage for the beginning meditator. These audio tracks are not recommend for advanced practitioners and will actually keep them from reaching more profound states of consciousness. 5. Touch and focus on chakras. Focusing on the body's chakra points is an ancient and important part of meditation. Older system of meditation often required focus on each of the seven main chakra points in sequence. More and more often, modern styles have reduced this to three specific chakra points; Chi chakra, heart chakra and mind chakra. Nearby chakras are affected nearly as much as the chakra of focus and a lot of time is saved. Creating a more repeatable and focused experience. Missing from most teachings is the fact that you actually need to touch the chakra point with your hand; specifically the tips of two fingers. The high nerve density in your hand serves to increase your focus and keep your mind from wandering. 6. Both guided and unguided versions of the music. The best meditation music tracks also need to have two versions. The first version includes voice instructions over the music for learning proper technique. The guided version should be used by the advanced student once per week to make sure their form stays sharp. The second version has no instructions and is for daily use. The unguided version is where really deep states of mind are reached. 7. Twice per day. I hate to say it but improvement takes effort, just mastering at any other skill. If you want to be a great author, you have to write, write, write. If you want to get in better shape, you have to consistently go the gym and work out. If you want to become a great surgeon, you have to continually practice your skills by perform! ing surg eries. One meditation per day is good and you will improve if you only meditate once per day But the optimum number is twice per day. This still is a small investment of time, but reaching this state of mind twice per day for day 20 minutes each works much better than one 40 minute meditation. And the more often you reach these deeper states of mind during meditation, the more likely the skills you learn from meditation will bleed over into the rest of your day. The benefits are truly vast…meditation is a wonder drug for both the mind and the body. In my opinion, it is a vital component to a healthy, vibrant, spiritually connected lifestyle. The benefits of meditation range from feeling more tranquility and inner peace through calming the mind to the ultimate benefit which is the experience of utter bliss and enlightenment. Meditation is a tool and, like any tool, if you don't use it properly, you won't get the desired results. One of the most common questions I'm asked by people is how to meditate. Most people seeking higher consciousness and self awareness realize the benefits of meditation yet many struggles when it comes to technique. The first question to consider is which method to practice and then to learn how to correctly practice it. There are many techniques to consider and all have desirable benefits. I personally practice and teach Shaktipat meditation. Shakti refers to the life force energy that creates and sustains everything in the universe. It is the energy that beats your heart and rotates the planets. Shaktipat is the transmission of this life-giving energy. It is an easy third eye meditation in which you simply close your eyes and focus your attention on the point between your eyebrows. This activates the pituitary gland inside your brain which creates a very natural and soothing relaxation response. The lineage of Shaktipat meditation dates back over 8000 years…literally before recorded history. It is an extremely powerful energy and when you tune in to it, you are directly tapping into the source of life itself. As the feeling increases, it is normal to feel joy and bliss. Ultimately, states of ecstasy can be reached. Honestly, while it is easy to explain how to meditate, it is hard to put the feelings that occur into words. The best advice is to try it. For most people, it is easier to feel Shakti via a guided meditation from an experienced teacher. The bottom line is that consistent meditation leads to a healthier mind and body. My belief is that we all have a soul that is pure and enlightened. Meditation is the ultimate tool to help purify the mind and the body to allow the light and love of your soul to shine through. Gyuto Monks Sculpting For Peace Posted: 26 Jan 2012 12:00 AM PST The Gyuto Monks return to Crystal Castle for the next stage of the World Peace Stupa - Sculpting the symbolic signs, patterns and traditional emblems on to the exterior levels of the throne. The size of the project and the sophisticated moulding technique being utilized in the construction process means the monks will work with the large moulds in situ on the ground before they are placed in position on the stupa base. Tashi Gyaltso, chief stupa artist will work with a couple of monks on this part of the task while other the monks continue to work in the Discovery Room preparing the other items still to be placed in the upper levels of the stupa. More texts are arriving from the monastery in India for inclusion and more tsa tsas and statues need to be dressed and wrapped for placement in the stupa. Meanwhile Gen Lama Thupten Phuntsok will keep a vigilant eye on all the activity to ensure all is being carried out according to sacred ritual as it has been for hundreds of years. In between this more physical work, the monks will offer their usual program of morning chanting, children's activities, lunchtime meditation sessions and talks. It takes time and it takes energy also, lots of it initially. Besides that, it also demands grit, determination and discipline. And we generally don't mention it frequently and take note of it, but it also requires a host of personal qualities like stubbornness, eagerness and perseverance. The American word 'gumption' goes a long way in summing it all up. In other words, Meditation takes 'gumption'. It is definitely much more easier to just kick back and watch your favourite television show. Or, just get into the usual pattern of idle gossiping of what is going around in the neighbourhood or some other idle chat. So, the question arises why bother about meditation after all? Why waste all the time and energy when we could be enjoying ourselves or use that time to make more money for our future? Why bother? But its very simple. Because we are human beings. We all agree unanimously on this fact and appreciate the fact too. On the backdrop of this fact, another reality also pops up. And that is if God is everywhere, then he is also in me, right here, right now and in all of us. And this very body is a divine temple where the God exists in his full glory. So, if I am on the lookout for God, would it not be a good idea to start seeking for him from my own body itself, which is the nearest place where I can find him? I would definitely find him quickest and easiest if I start from my own body rather than seeking him in far off places. Why seek for pennies elsewhere when the Diamond is in my own pocket? Scriptures and holy men have always talked about dissolving our ego and any I-ness and My-ness with the body. We have also been told that our body is a bag of filth and we are not body. So many of us start to have a condemning attitude towards the body. But this is a wrong attitude. This is not the way to treat our body. Our body is not OURS. It is the vehicle given to us by God. So, is it right to hate it? We all love God right? Then is it right that we hate the gift given to us by him? Is it right to love the CREATOR but hate his CREATION. Definitely Not. Hence, We should not have a relationship of repulsion or attachment with our body, but a relationship of love. As such, there are many variations in the practice and goals of meditation within Buddhism. This article therefore is necessarily an overview and brief introduction to the wide range of Buddhist meditation. Buddhism has taught meditation to its adherents since the 5th century BC. Gautama Buddha (or simply "the Buddha", meaning "he who has achieved enlightenment"), the founder of the religion and its supreme teacher sought escape from this world and found it in meditation. Since then, this has been passed on to his followers. Broadly speaking, Buddhist meditation has as its goal the achievement of a deeper state of relaxation, or a heightened sense of awareness, a knowledge of the true nature of things. Ultimately, all meditation is seen as the path to enlightenment (a state in which a person is freed from all delusions about the world) and nirvana(a similar state, where one is free from greed and hate). Buddhism teaches that the root of all suffering and pain in the world is ignorance combined with greed and desire. On reaching nirvana, the soul is freed from all suffering, and indeed from the very cycle of rebirth. Techniques for meditation vary between different schools of thought - for example, there are hundreds of traditional methods of achieving mindfulness (a state of mind in which you are strongly aware of the present moment and distant from your own thoughts) and there are thousands of mental visualisations used in meditation. Different forms of meditation are designed to develop different desirable characteristics: concentration, loving-kindness, compassion, wisdom, freedom and so forth. Many techniques are common however, such as a focus on breathing as a means to reach tranquility and awareness. This method, known as Anapanasati has been recommended as a method by itself to reach! nirvana . This technique usually involves sitting comfortably, back straight and with no difficulty breathing. The meditator breathes normally, observing their breaths and simply becoming aware of them. No attempt is made to regulate, simply to observe and become aware of the body and its functioning. Meanwhile the meditator is trained to focus on eliminating thought. To an untrained meditator, thoughts will constantly break the calm of meditation, but with practise, true mental tranquility can be achieved. While this simplifies, the ultimate goal is to eliminate thought and clear the mind through a series of stages to reach nirvana. The philosophy of Buddhist meditation is therefore one of liberation - the teaching that man can escape from his self-imposed suffering through awareness of his surroundings and focusing his thoughts. Buddha sought to escape from old age, illness and death, and provided, through meditation, a prescription to his followers, an exhortation to follow him and hope to achieve his fate. In true yoga sense, the practice of yoga means the union of the body and mind, and even the spirit.The common and accepted meaning of yoga refers to the practice of physical postures and poses. As people hear of the benefits of meditation it has travelled the world several times over under various different names. One thing that we have realised though is that countries like India, China and Japan have always been at the forefront of meditation. Most of the new enlightenment techniques that we are just learning now started in Asia, and often centuries ago. As you can imagine though there are a lot of differences between how people live in Asia and how we live in the West today.Our upbringings are different, our lifestyles are different, and the way we learn and understand is totally alien to the people of Asia. This means that the way our countries understand and accept meditation is also slightly different. In Asia students of meditation learn the concepts by way of parables or stories. In the West we encourage critical thought. We teach our children how to think with rational, logical minds. Telling stories to explain a thought doesn't work. We require facts and scientific data. Yoga is one of six canonical Hindu philosophy systems with roots dating back more than 4,000 years. Bikram Choudhury, the world-renowned creator of the Bikram Yoga Position, began his travel by utilising Hatha Yoga in his native India at the age of three, and rapidly became a champ; at the age of 11 he was the youngest contestant ever to win the National Yoga Championship. Bikram proceeded his athletic training in earnest until, at the age of 17, he was impaired by a weightlifting knee accidental injury; the European medical specialists examining him established that Bikram would never walk again. We may be stressed out juggling all of this and need some sort of stress release, even if it's just a few minutes a day. Or we may be perfectly happy with our busy lives, but still could use some time to bring some peace and calm into our world. Meditation has long been a practice that lets people find that inner peace and outer calm. It allows us to take a break from the busyness of our lives. It gives us a respite from hurrying about so we can create some outer calm. And it provides our minds with a rest from thinking overtime and growing more stressed by the day. If you've never really experienced inner peace and outer calm, you're in for a real treat. Meditation is not just for monks, religious fanatics, or recluses. Today meditation is for everyone who seeks sanctuary from the world-even for a few minutes a day. And it's not all that complicated or difficult to do to get instant benefits. You might not become a master meditator and achieve instant stillness of your mind the first time you do it, but you will get immediate relief from your frantic life as you retreat into that quiet place within. Here are 10 simple steps to start you on your way: 1. Commit to your daily practice. Decide that you will meditate every day, even if just for 5 minutes. 2. Find a place where you can meditate every day. Pick a quiet spot where you won't be disturbed and meditate there every day, as you will build up energy in that space. 3. Choose the time. Meditate the same time each day if possible, best times being early morning or early evening. Start out for 5 minutes and add a few more minutes each day until you're up to 20-30 minutes. 4. Prepare the environment. Light a candle, burn incense, create an atmosphere conducive to quieting your mind and body. 5. Warm up. Before meditating, practice yoga or stretch out your body to relax your muscles! and slo w down your mind. 6. Select the most comfortable posture. Most meditators sit in a chair, on the floor, or on a bench with a straight back. Find what works best for you so you stay alert but relaxed. 7. Start with 3-part breathing. Breathe in through your nose into your abdomen and let it expand. Bring the breathe into your lungs and let them fill up. Collapse your abdomen and push the air out through your nose. 8. Continue slow, deep breathing. Breathe slowly and deeply to a count of 5 for each of the three parts, until you feel sufficiently relaxed. 9. Select a method for each meditation session. You might try counting breaths, counting numbers or saying a mantra (a simple one is I AM). Listen to music, watch a candle. Observe your thoughts; stare at a mandala. You can also experiment with chanting, visualizing a relaxing scene, doing yoga, or simply practicing a state of mindfulness. All are all acceptable methods for meditating; find out which one works for you. 10. Keep a journal. Record your experiences with meditation to see what benefits you're getting; this will keep you motivated to keep at it and try different things. Some people meditate for years and never achieve a perfectly silent mind, however, if you don't make that your only goal, you won't set yourself up for disappointment or failure. Just look at the precious time you take to sit quietly in meditation as a mental spa, a break in your routine, a gift to yourself.
