The Art of Living Foundation announced that international spiritual leader and peacemaker Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will bring his timely message of individual empowerment and human values to Los Angeles, April 18-22. His visit marks the launch of a national campaign that offers a solution to the challenge of stress, helping individuals empower themselves to live a life of greater happiness and fulfillment.

Sri Sri will lead a three evening series titled "Secrets of Meditation," April 19-21, 7.30p.m. He will also provide a commentary on a key Upanishad during his visit. The Upanishads are ancient texts that contain knowledge of living life in higher states of consciousness. In all of these forums, Sri Sri will bring out knowledge in a way that is relevant to modern life and instill participants with a sense of greater peace, awareness and happiness.

"The 'Secrets of Meditation' series is an incredible opportunity to experience deep meditations and profound knowledge with a revered spiritual teacher who makes life's profound truths accessible in a simple manner," said Michael Fischman, president of the U.S. Art of Living Foundation.

Named one of the five most powerful people in India by Forbes, Sri Sri has inspired a global phenomenon of compassion and service through his campaign to create a violence-free, stress-free world. His initiatives in conflict resolution, trauma and disaster relief, business and social responsibility, prisoner rehabilitation, youth leadership, women's empowerment, PTSD relief, and education, and his programs of meditation, breathing, and self development have impacted the lives of more than 30 million people worldwide. In particular, the Youth Empowerment Seminar (YES!) programs are helping thousands of young people in inner city high schools in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New Orleans, where children and teens have reported reduced stress and improved performance.

This will be Sri Sri's third visit to the Art of Living's new Los Angeles Center, which was inaugurated in April 2010. A historic landmark building in the West Adams district near USC, the Center has already established itself as an instrument for community upliftment through its breathing, meditation, yoga, and knowledge programs, as well as ongoing cultural events and forums designed to build bridges of understanding between the city's diverse communities.

The Sri Sri-founded partner organizations, the Art of Living Foundation, International Association for Human Values, and Ved Vignan Mahavidyapeeth (VVM), have collaborated to offer self-development programs for adults, corporate leaders, leadership development for young adults, summer camps for children, as well as specialized programs for returning veterans, people with HIV and their caregivers, and international cultural events. Sri Sri's flagship Art of Living Course is taught in 151 countries, and numerous studies on its core breathing practices have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals.

5 Tips for Being Happy

Posted: 05 May 2012 06:00 AM PDT

How to Be Happy

What makes life a joy for some, while a sad and frustration filled journey for others?  It is karma?  It is luck?  Is it disposition?  Is it fate?  I don't think so.  I think you are supposed to be happy.  You are supposed to be full of joy and wonder, yet somehow, somewhere on this journey, things got out of control and you spiraled into the tedium of everyday life and found your life filled with conflict, suffering and the never ending pursuit of happiness.

How do you get out of this rut now?  How do you find your way back to joy and peace?  Here are 5 tips which I think you will find useful on the journey to reclaim your birthright – fundamental happiness.

1. Understand the Problem:

The first thing you need to do is understand the root cause of your angst.  Why are you so restless and discontented?  Why is your default state not happiness?  To understand this, inspect this very moment of your life and study the situation honestly and openly.  The root cause you will discover is time.

You think in terms of time and time brings in the issue of "becoming" into your psyche.  To put in another way, you are unhappy and bored with your life, because you have believed in an ideal or goal, which you think will make you happy when you will achieve it.  This thirst for the ideal – seeking, destroys the beauty of your life just the way it is in the here and now.  It kills the wonder of the moment and ordinary life.

So drop all your ideals and just attend to your life just the way it is.  This is the pathway to joy.

2. Liv! e Your P assion:

As I explained in the article, Stop the Madness of Self-Discipline, one of the most important things to do in order to live a happy life, is to discover and live your passion.  If you can do this, you will be free from the clutches of society, for you will be doing what you love to do without a care in the world.

You will not be result oriented, as the doing itself will be the reward, and you will have something that no one can take away from you, as it is something that comes from within.

This is also one of the most important lessons for parents to learn.  One of your biggest responsibilities is to help the child discover what it is that he or she loves to do and then help them to do that without concern for survival or success.  Living your passion is one of the most essential aspects for living a happy and meaningful life.

3. Have Trust:

Our faith and trust in life is constantly challenged and over time eroded by all the endless failures and problems we are forced to endure.  This loss of trust then leads to a life filled with worry and anxiety.  We become obsessed with self-security and become completely immersed in our pursuit of happiness.  So instead of living in trust and going with the flow, we become machines of fear and worry and have no peace within.

This peace and ability to live spontaneously comes with just being able to trust.  Not trust someone or some belief, but simply just having trust in life.  This then translates into being carefree and not carrying the burden of self-interest, which bring w! ith it g reat freedom and joy.

4. End Isolation and Endless Self-Interest:

All of our endless thinking about ourselves and endless selfish activity isolates us more and more from the whole.  It keeps on putting more and more walls around ourselves and eventually we find ourselves utterly alone and lonely, cut-off from the world, miserable and unhappy.  So you need to change this approach if you indeed what to live a happy life.  You have to simply drop endless self-interest and instead live in a connected way.

Connect with all aspects of life, be a part of the great play of life, connect with nature and others, connect with awareness and intelligence, this will bring you to happiness.  Thinking about yourself, isolates you more and more, so just stop doing that.

5. Mediate:

All of the above tips I have given for being happy, are really a part of meditation.  It is living a mediate life.  Mediation is the process which starts in time and then transcends it.  So if you really want to be happy, want to be at peace, meditation is the way.

If you are new to mediation you can sign up for the free online learn meditation classes that are offered here on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga.  If you are looking to deepen your practice, you can try the free online advanced meditation program.

If you have more tips for being happy that hav! e worked for you, please do share them with us in the comments section below.  Also, if you like this or any other article on the website, please share with your friends and family or Facebook, Twitter, etc.   I appreciate your support.

New Book Encourages Embracing of Meditation

Posted: 05 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT

Author Julien Bouchard has mined more than four decades of experience researching and practicing meditation to produce the new nonfiction book "Discoveries through Meditation" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"In our modern and hyperactive world people are becoming more and more confused and insecure," Bouchard writes. "This book could help them understand what is important and what is not and extend them a happier life."

The following excerpt from "Discoveries through Meditation" is about meditation:
"A discipline practiced in order to become conscious of the thought process, then to realize that it is uncontrollable and finally to ignore it. Meditation allows one to reach a superior level of consciousness and in the end to transcend matter, pierce through illusion and reach liberation. Meditation on emptiness is by far the most direct and quickest approach to achieve the goal. This type of meditation does not require any efforts or analysis. The observer concentrates on emptiness while he stays focused on a point spot in his head, an object ahead of him or on his breathing without letting the target invade him or becoming the target. In this state the adept establishes mental silence and in the internal peace, observes. Knowledge surfaces from the silence. The observer must avoid all efforts and, like a baby filled with wonder, look upon creation as it really is."

Bouchard believes readers, after finishing "Discoveries through Meditation," will "… understand meditation techniques and how to practice this discipline. They will also obtain a vision of what meditation practice can bring to oneself."

Gathering to Examine Benefits of Yoga

Posted: 05 May 2012 04:00 AM PDT

The first-ever International Symposia for Contemplative Studies, coordinated and cosponsored by the Mind & Life Institute, will be held at the Denver Hyatt Regency Hotel April 26-29, 2012. In this landmark cross-disciplinary conference, more than 700 neuroscientists, educators, and contemplative scholars from around the world will gather to share cutting-edge research on the nature and workings of the human mind. Keynotes, master lectures, and other presentations will explore how a scientific understanding of the mind can address a wide range of issues, including health, education, and personal and social wellness.

Symposia speakers include luminaries from the world's most prestigious institutions, such as Harvard University, Brown University, the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Zurich, and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris. Congressman Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) will discuss his new book, A Mindful Nation, in which he advocates using contemplative practices to address a host of current national concerns. Wellesley College past-president Diana Chapman Walsh will deliver the opening keynote address.

The research presented at the Symposia reflects scientists' findings that contemplative practices, such as meditation and mindfulness, can produce measurable effects that alleviate suffering and improve well-being, including reducing addiction, pain, post-partum issues depression, and anxiety disorders, as well as improving educational performance, leadership, and overall physical and mental health.

Arthur Zajonc, former physics professor at Amherst College and the new president of the Mind & Life Institute, says that the gathering is significant in several ways: Researchers in this field are far-flung, and this conference offers a chance to build a global research community that can share results and insights and greatly increase the effectiveness of the work. Also, most of the scientific research into the human mind has been basic research, where the Denver event represents an initial effort to move to application of results. And finally, instead of involving only neuroscientists, as many mind-research conferences have done, the Symposium involves neuroscientists, social scientists, and contemplative scholars as equal partners.

"This is an important opportunity for the Mind & Life Institute," Zajonc says, "because it exemplifies our interest in an integrated research method that brings all of our human capacities to bear on important problems that block human flourishing."

3-Week Osho Intensive Meditation Event

Posted: 05 May 2012 03:00 AM PDT

Inner Metamorphosis University (I.M.U.), a meditation center in Chicago, is organizing a 3-week Osho Meditation Intensive Event which will run from June 3rd to June 24th 2012. This Osho meditation event includes meditation techniques that take into consideration the physical, mental and emotional difficulties that modern people face and help discover how to live a more fulfilled life. This meditation event in Chicago is open to people from all walks of life. Osho Active Meditations will help one get a new perspective on life.

Amona's quote "This Meditation intensive workshop will not only present a wonderful jump start for beginners but is also perfect for people who have a regular meditation practice at our IMU Meditation Center. Through these unique intense approaches one will discover many surprises within oneself that have been dormant in the unconscious and inhibiting one in subtle ways from being fully alive." Osho's meditations are being practiced regularly by millions of people around the world in hundreds of Osho centers. Osho said, "If one wants to live a more fulfilled life, first one should to know ones potential, who one really is. Meditation is the route to that knowing. It is the science of awareness."

Each day of this meditation event is split into morning and evening meditation sessions. In the morning session, the participants will be guided through two sessions of meditation: the Osho Dynamic Meditation which is an hour long intense meditation and a perfect way to kick start the day. It is followed by half hour break for shower and tea in silence. The second meditation of the day is the Osho Vipassana Meditation, in which the participants learn the process of watching themselves without interfering with or judging whatever comes into notice.

The evening sessions are also split into two meditations: the Osho Kundalini Meditation which is designed for people willing shake off all the stress gathered through the day and the Osho Discourse that focuses more on getting participants to experience inner silence. Additionally, the breakfast and dinner, which is essentially all organic and vegetarian, is also included in the workshop.

Moreover participants may be pleased to know that the events is arranged in such a flexible way that they can also choose to attend all or just some selected meditations in either a one week or a two-week format in our meditation center, though, the full three-week workshop remains the best option.

A free questions and answers session will also be organized ahead of the Intensive Meditations Workshop to let people know what to expect. This will be offered on Saturday, May 26 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Finally, Inner Metamorphosis University as the venue of this meditation intensive event is an ideal meditation center in Chicago for participants to always enjoy their meditation experience. IMU has been helping people deepen and celebrate their life through meditation for more than 7 years now. Apart from the Osho Meditation Intensive Workshop, IMU organizes a variety of workshops, retreats and meditation events in Chicago to discover and enhance a state of inner peace and silence which is the basis for spontaneity, joy and celebration.

Meditation Helps Children with ADD, Focus and Memory

Posted: 05 May 2012 02:00 AM PDT

Meditation is the answer to suffering and is the ultimate purpose of human birth, but besides these Highest "goals" of meditation, there are a great many other benefits and applications to meditation as well.  In today's guest article, David, who is the founder of http://www.blisslotus.com/, reveals how meditation helps children who suffer from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), by helping them develop calmness, presence, focus and control over their reactions to external stimuli.

If you would like to be a guest author on Mastery of Meditation and Yoga, please email me at anmol@anmolmehta.com.

Meditation Helps Children with ADD

Frustrated parents and educators have long sought alternatives to medication when helping children deal with Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Who knew that ancient Buddhists have long held a valuable tool in reaching that goal? Only recently are we realizing the tremendous benefits that Meditation can bring as a very viable course of action in aiding the over 5.2 million children diagnosed in America with ADD or ADHD, according to the Center for Disease Control. The art of Mindfulness, or focusing the thoughts, has been a practiced meditation technique for thousands of years. Scientists and medical professionals are now discovering that meditation can be a huge factor in teaching ADD/ADHD children to increase focus, improve overall memory, reduce anxiety levels and calm a hyperactive mind and body.

"One recent study found evidence that the daily practice of meditation thickened the parts of the brain's ! cerebral cortex responsible for decision making, attention and memory", claims a study from Mass General Hospital.  According to a study published in Time Magazine, scientists discovered that those who meditated just 40 few minutes a day reaped huge benefits for many aspects of the brain development.

Teaching children how to meditate in school can increase student's ability to successfully perform as it heightens awareness and increases attention sustainability. Additionally, schools specializing in educating learning disabled students are incorporating meditation into their school-wide curriculum and noticing a huge increase in the ability of ADHD students to perform.

Teaching a child to meditate at home, when ADD/ADHD children are now able to 'let off the steam' built up in trying to focus at school, gives kids an additional outlet to take a few moments of calm and center themselves to handle homework or retain calm for their other activities after school.  Parents have reported happier homes once they incorporated daily meditation into their routines.

Sara, a mother of 4, reported that her son Gabe has been dealing with ADHD since the age of 5.  His hyperactivity really reduced the amount of play dates he was offered as he was not able to understand boundaries and he often overwhelmed the other children in school.  When Sara first discovered Meditation for her herself, she realized the soothing affect it had on her entire day.  She decided to teach Gabe some of the techniques she had learned during her sessions.  Within days, she realized that Gabe was generally less anxious and overall easier to handle at home.  Three years later, daily meditations have taught Gabe to focus and calm the mind and better hyperactivity management.  Meditation has been! a life- changer for their family and Gabe's functioning both in school and at home.

Meditation practice teaches children how to learn to control their thoughts and in turn their reactions, to outside distractions. One of the main components that ADD/ADHD children struggle with is the inability to control themselves, their thoughts and their reaction to stimuli. Through practice of Meditation children can learn to calm the mind, focus on the purpose of restructuring the thoughts back to the deliberate and intentional spot or focal point. Meditation can also provide a much needed break in routine that allows children dealing with attention disorders to come back and refocus on the task refreshed and renewed.

Parents, educators and Medical Professionals have been looking to incorporate alternative methods for years. Meditation practice is a proven effective, healthy and holistic way to improve the overall anxiety levels, focus levels and functioning levels of the over 8.4 % of children dealing with ADD/ADHD all over the country.

Meditation Makes You More Creative

Posted: 05 May 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Certain meditation techniques can promote creative thinking. This is the outcome of a study by cognitive psychologist Lorenza Colzato and her fellow researchers at Leiden University, published 19 April in Frontiers in Cognition.

This study is a clear indication that the advantages of particular types of meditation extend much further than simply relaxation. The findings support the belief that meditation can have a long-lasting influence on human cognition, including how we think and how we experience events.

Two ingredients of creativity

The study investigates the influences of different types of meditative techniques on the two main ingredients of creativity: divergent and convergent styles of thinking.

Divergent thinking Divergent thinking allows many new ideas to be generated. It is measured using the so-called Alternate Uses Task method where participants are required to think up as many uses as possible for a particular object, such as a pen.

Convergent thinking Convergent thinking, on the other hand, is a process whereby one possible solution for a particular probem is generated. This method is measured using the Remote Associates Task method, where three unrelated words are presented to the participants, words such as 'time', 'hair' and 'stretch'. The particpants are then asked to identify the common link: in this case, 'long'.

Analysis of meditation techniques

Colzato used creativity tasks that measure convergent and divergent thinking to assess which meditation techiques most influence creative activities. The meditation techniques analysed are Open Monitoring and Focused Attention meditation.

In Open Monitoring meditation the individual is receptive to all the thoughts and sensations experienced without focusing attention on any particular concept or object.

In Focused Attention meditation the individual focuses on a particular thought or object.

Different types of meditation have different effects

These findings demonstrate that not all forms of meditation have the same effect on creativity. After an Open Monitoring meditation the participants performed better in divergent thinking, and generated more new ideas than previously, but Focused Attention (FA) meditation produced a different result. FA meditation also had no significant effect on convergent thinking leading to resolving a problem.
